Give Your Child a Superior Mind: A Program for Preschool Children

When my sons were three and one, I saw an ad in "Parents Magazine" about the upcoming book, and ordered it to be delivered as soon as it was ready for the market. It was expensive, in those days, but I was worried about my oldest son, who was not yet talking, although I knew he was quite bright. I learned later that this was genetic, on his father's side, in all males. Nevertheless, when the book came, I started in immediately, and that child was reading before he was talking clearly enough for anyone but me to understand him! He was doing "new math" and playing chess. Since all motor skills were delayed in that same genetic heritage, the physical exercises, done on very-simple-to-make equipment, helped him a lot as well. When he began school, he was already reading at a third or fourth grade level and refused to let me read to him. "I will read to you, Mommy." His little brother followed in his footsteps.

At about fourth grade level, each of them became bored in class and were sent to be evaluated -- they were tested and scored in the genius range, the top one percentile. Each was skipped one grade, and given extra projects, creative things, to do, which enriched their educational experience.

Since I was a single mother, I sacrificed everything I could to give them every opportunity to explore their options, given their potential. They, like most very bright children, jumped from one activity to another, becoming quickly bored with each, but having learned a lot from them. I was told by the educational psychologist who followed their progress with great interest, that this was normal for very bright children. They wanted to experience everything possible. My younger son was so enamored of chess that he was just one step away from being a chess master, at 14, but then he veered off into something else. I think he was afraid of being stuck in that narrow world, and I don't blame him.

Both sons excelled academically and developed normally in every other way, are understanding and generous, take up causes when they see injustices being done, and generally are "good decent men" in their 40s now. They are both working at the high end of Information Technology, creating the newest and greatest as they go. I owe so much to that book, including my own development.

The psychologist so interested in my sons decided to test me as well. I had worked for 18 hours with no sleep, was taking heavy doses of Valium, and was hungry and exhausted when I took my tests (yes a whole pile of them.) I scored one point above my sons, and I think the book had had an effect on me as well, focusing me in the right directions to develop my intelligence into productive and constructive lines of endeavor. I did not tell my sons this until a few years ago when they began to speak as if they were superior to their old mom. HaHa, what a surprise for them! What fun!

You can do nothing more important than give your child all you can for developing his maximum potential as a human being, and using this book is one way to do that. It is easy to use, clear, and FUN. Once you start you can't stop . . . or at least I couldn't.

No matter how much you have to pay, GET THIS BOOK!

Step by Step how to build from one concept to another

The authors clearly articulate why it's important to explain the world accurately from early on and demystefies how to do so. There are no obscurities here - just clear cut steps of concepts to convey, common errors to both avoid and clarify and fun suggestions of how to incorporate these ideas into everyday life.

This book was written several decades ago. As a result, while it is still as insightful on pre-k education and very directive on what parents should teach their children but some of the writing style is out of date

As a parent of two young girls, and as a teacher, I highly endorse this
book. Buy it and read it through first, before attempting to teach your child/children. It is excellent, especially the math section. It is one of those rare books that not only teaches you to teach the skill, but also to give your students a comprehension of the skill. Both of my girls
are in the top half of their classes in math and reading!
Please, BUY IT!

I bought one of the first ones out, in the 60s. It had been advertised as about to be released, so I prepaid so I would get it first thing. I had a three-year-old at the time. He was not talking yet (a genetic thing -- he talks beautifully now) but he struggled to make himself understood -- it was a motor development deficiency.

When I got this book, I immediately began the exercises, followed the suggestions, etc. My son blossomed, and when his baby brother became old enough, he too, learned well and quickly. They could both read as soon as they could talk! They could do math in their heads, they could play chess, as well, of course, as tic-tac-toe. When they went to kindergarten, they were writing, reading at about a second grade level, and were quite creative and artistic. I was amazed and delighted!

They were also ahead of their peers in motor skills and eye-hand coordination (a miracle, since the males in their father's family tended to be about two years behind in motor development!)

I believe firmly that this book allowed my sons to become the geniuses they are -- with IQs in the .003% of the population -- that is one in 333, if my math is correct. I could be wrong. Nevertheless it stood them in good stead in school, then in getting jobs. They are both in computer work,, but in very different areas. I am always amazed at their vocabulary, their ability to articulate, and their understanding of the "guts" of computers, etc.

Like I said, this book is a must, especially if your child has the beginnings of anything that could become a learning disabiity.

THis is a fantastic book! I have used it in teaching my child to read and in helping him in physical development, etc. I originally found it at a flea market for a dollar and have been his biggest fan! My son is now seven years old and adds fractions with unlike denominators and is learning algebra. He reads on a fourth grade level and is very clever. Engelmann is spot-on when he advocates that you teach children to take a question of their ability to do something as a challenge rather than as a solid truth. There are so many stereotypes and cruel prejudices out there that no child can afford to believe the naysayers. If a child doesn't understand something in school that is a foundation for many later things, they can be typecast as stupid. It's very important to build the confidence of the little ones so that when they face hardship or negativity from others, they have a core sense of their ability to do, learn, and triumph. It should be required reading because he is very plain in stating that a child who has been marked early as slower can be guided along, using this book, to be at a normal (and I would believe higher) comprehension level. He firmly touts nurture over nature and I do too! It is a travesty that children are babytalked and coddled as if they aren't, truly, little people. When they are told the magical truth about our solar system and about the animal kingdom or mechanics, it is as if their little face had before been a tight little bud, but with a little radiant knowledge shone on it, it blossoms into a grateful, awestruck rose. I'm sure a lot of you who homeschool know what I mean. How many times have you explained an adult concept that really opened the world up to your child and they hugged you so hard and planted a loving kiss on your cheek in wordless thanks? It is a beautiful experience that I wish on all.
I think his How To Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons is a better program than Hooked on Phonics because it's very concentrated and comprehensive at the same time. You end up teaching your child his/her abc's, rhyming, reading, and writing the letters--all at the same time and in 100 lessons. What a great idea! I speak more on that book under its review.

Who doesn't like Cliff Notes? We used them to help our kids do several projects for Language Arts class. Teachers assigned a lot of projects and they were difficult...this helped a great deal for different ideas and angles on the story.

This is a book for all ages. Although the book is at a low reading level, it has a universal concept of difference and the effect on the world today, that is better used even as a high school student or adult. The Giver is undoubtedly one of the best books I have ever read, and it has educated me on how differences are so important, although cliche, this brings a new meaning to conformity and a world without differences. The first word that comes to mind about this book is beauty, although in this case, that comes to me with the unsettling feeling of this perhaps a truth of the future.

I have always wondered what this book was about, and I finally found the time to read it for a LA project. The author used a lot of imagination and was very creative when she formed the perfect world that Jonas lived in. This book has some good morals behind it, but I think it is rather dull and could use more suspense. I was very disappointed with the shortness of the book and the ending. Even though I do enjoy making up endings on my own, Lois Lowry has stopped the book right at the climax. I believe that she should have elaborated and given more information that would help bring the story to a wonderful ending. Over all this book is a great book to read for pleasure.

I like the book it is different, because of the way she uses the different world how they can't make different choices. I thought that she used new words to express the feelings about Jonas and The Giver. I also thought that she used the advantage of them not having choices, because it made them realised that "Elswhere" really exixted.
I didn't like the ending it was making me hang of the edge of my seat. It made me think about the ending and how Jonas got to elsewhere. She needs more of the ending or the sequel to the book. I do agree about the way she described about not having a sequal though.

My teacher read this book to us in English class for a unit. I really liked this book because it makes you think or imagine what could have happened to Jonas and Gabe. I know in my class when we finished the book, my teacher asked us what we thought happened at the end, so we all gave our ideas. Some kids said that he got a job or got married or died. Anything could have happened to them. Thats why I liked this book.

The children love the pictures and the message contained exemplifies our beliefs and concerns. I would recommend this book to any family, no matter what their spiritual tradition.

Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message (Reading Rainbow Book)
This is a beautiful and inspiring way to help children become more aware of our interconnectedness with the elements of nature. It is a lesson in appreciation and awareness of the environment.
The illustrations are moving, if not as childlike as those often found in books for young children.

My 29 month old loves this book. We read it over and over. What I love most about the construction of the book is that is has a sewn binding--no dangerous staples! He loves the art work and in one day has memorized most of the text. It's simple, to the point, and thorough. A perfect book for any child. NOW he wants to do the "Mother Earth" puzzle. He identifies different types of food, spirits animals, and "thunder beings." I recommend this book for all ages, boy and girl.

Amazon purchases have been handled VERY efficiently. We are "price" shoppers for the most part. I detest, and will not, complete the rating requests that I typically get because after check the "star" questions, the review will not "go through" without a comment. You cannot FORCE me to make a comment. If I had a problem, I could/would explain it. Leave that judgement to me please. Also I keep getting request to "change my password" before I go into the Amazon sight. If you want to improve service, consider these two "problems". Kindly.

This is an extremely inspiring and amazing tale of a woman and her quest be a missionary to China.
She indures many hardships and successes that can only be attributed to God. One of the best books I have ever read and it is an amazing adventure. Both my boys ages 9 and 10 and I throughly enjoyed this book. It held their attention on every page.

I read this to my children a few weeks ago, and I found it incredibly moving. I am not one to get sentimental over books, but I found this story so inspiring and really incredible. The book begins with Gladys being told by the head of a missionary school that she would never make it on the mission field. She isn't cut out for missionary work. She is urged to go back to being a professional housekeeper. Instead, Gladys stubbornly chooses to pay her own way to China. God uses her in a mighty way, eventually bringing the mandarin (similar to a governor) to faith in Christ. I was so touched by how God was able to use her in spite of what others thought that it brought me to tears.

I've come to the conclusion that any book by these authors is worth reading -- every book I've read of theirs is excellent.

Having completed a B.A. degree in youth ministry, no textbook was more influential for my ministry than this one. I read it again and again to remember why I chose the career path I did. Far from explaining "how to" of "what", this book inspires the reader to answer the question "why". Not a model of ministry, but a theology of transforming lives. Reading this book helps me remember my roots. A practical guide to build a foundation of incarnational theology to youth. In other words, this book helps its reader live as Jesus calls us to.

Excellent Read for Youth Ministers!

This book, more than any other I have read to date, describes the changes that must take place as youth ministry enters the 21st century. The authors focus upon the necessity of having spiritual, youth relationships rather than just social, youth recreation. The crying need today is for churches to minister as only they can do to the emptiness young people face in their lives. Rather than competing with secular programming, Christian youth ministries are called to offer something entirely different from the secular world.

The authors describe in detail various measures to be taken that will energize youth in their Christian faith. This title is far from a book of programming ideas, but rather a very readable volume of philosophy and theology on youth ministry. I recommend it highly to all youth pastors, and other Christian professionals who will interact with teenagers on a regular basis.

Great groundwork for youth ministry

Review Date: 2005-08-29
This book reminds those in youth ministry why we are here: to be "God-bearers" to the youth whose lives we are entrusted with. This book is not about methods, how to grow a youth groups, or how to impress the rest of your church. This book is about realizing that at the core, youth ministry exists in order that we can form authentic relationships with young people. This book is a great read for a new youth pastor in order to make sure you have the correct focus in ministry. It would also make an exceptionally good read for the youth pastor who doesn't feel "successful" in youth ministry. Reading this book will encourage you and strip you away from the pragmatic standards of success and remind you that youth ministry only needs to have one authentic relationship with a young person in order for it to be successful.

I didn't give this book five stars because of the way in which it deals with Mary and some of the extra-biblical assumptions it makes. I found this part to be molded to fit the authors' desired point. Neverthless, this was a fairly minor drawback for me and I believe that every youth minister needs to read this book.

A must read for all ministers

Review Date: 2003-07-05
While the focus is on youth ministry, the ideas and principles in this book should be read by anybody who is a minister within the church. The "radical" idea of the book is that the church should be focused on changing the heart of people and society in order for all people to reach and strive for a relationship with God.
If you are looking for another gimmick in order to make a youth ministry program grow, this book is not for you. If you are looking for a book in how to minister to youth, thier families and the people who work with them, then this needs to be on your shelf.

This is a truely wonderful addition to any cookbook collection. Unlike most cookbooks that require you to spend a lot of money buying ingredients you most probably will only use once, these recipes mostly require olive oil, garlic, onions, peppers, the basic seasonings (e.g., oregano, salt, black or lemon pepper, etc.), and occasionally one more fancy addition (making the dishes MUCH less expensive, and allowing the true delicious taste of the meats and vegetables to come through). The book also offers a nice variety of dishes. It includes recipes for grilling chicken, fish, meat, mushrooms, AND deserts! (Did you know you can make a desert on the grill?) As a last point, these simple dishes can look fancy enough to impress anyone. I made a whole dinner for my husband on our two year wedding anniversary. I served the Shrimp with Lemon-Garlic Butter and Grilled Portobello Mushrooms with Basil Oil over rice, the Grilled Red Pepper, Sweet Onion, and Tomato Salad on the side, and the Grilled Pears with Rasberry-Grand Manier Sauce for desert. It took me about 45 minutes to prepare all the rubs and sauces (just because it was my first time putting it all together), but about 10 minutes to cook everything at the same time, and 3 minutes to serve. The meal was such a hit that my husband wants to make a new grilling dish every Wednesday night! By the way, for the novice grillers, the book also offers a glossary and an instructional section discussing types of grills, preparing the grill, checking for doneness, etc. I hope you enjoy the book as much as we do!

This book makes me pumped for summer! The recipes for the marinades and sauces look and sound really good. They are also explained very easily. One thing that I really liked about this cookbook, among others, is that the variety of meats, vegetables and all that good stuff is pretty big. It's not your 'regular old down home grillin' guide'. It's got pizazz, and I like that. I would recommend this cook book to anyone who likes grilling. Or, if you don't like grilling, get it for someone who does.

Wow. what a find. I was hesitant to buy the Williams and Sonoma book because I thought that the recipes would be too complicated and require expensive ingredients and be too fancy for the way I like to cook, but the dishes are easy to prepare and extremely elegant - without being too time consuming. I love this book. Got this book in the mail two weeks ago and have used it half a dozen times so far.

Before reading Dr. John Morella book, "A Guide for effective psychotherapy", I was clueless about the different types of psychotherapists there were. This book breaks down what you need to look for when choosing an therapist. What I enjoyed most about the book was he explained how and what you need to do in order to find the right therapist. The jokes also help me while reading the book. Dr. Morella did a good job writing this book. What more could you ask for when there are people out there looking for help and don't know where to begin. I really enjoyed reading his book. Im looking forward to reading his next book.

Before reading Dr. John Morella's book, "A Guide For Effective Psychotherapy", or even being in his class at SLCC i did not know too much about the study. Just by reading this book which was compressed into only eleven chapters, you can understand the most effective methods for psychotherapy if you or a freind find you might need some attention.
The book starts off with an itroduction introducing the author and the book. The next chapter tells the reader about diffrent mental health providers wich is very importaqnt. Then the book goes on to tslk about issues concerning psychotherapy and where to look to for help. Overall this book was helpful because i had a relative seeking help coping with the death of two sibling in the past few years. They were able to find the help they needed.
This book can deffinatly be useful to anyone who wants to know about psychology and the practive. i would most deffinatly recomend this book in the future.

He defines what it is a mental health profesional does. He also defines the different types of mental health profesional. He also provides a clear outline for a parent who is looking to get profesional help for their child. There is a list of references in the book as well on who somebody may contact for a specific problem that is already defined. He mixes in humor with the book to lighten it up a bit. A Guide for Effective Psychotherapy, in conclusion, is a valuable resource for anyone who is looking for proffesional help or seeking it for a loved one.

I have a tendency to be too wordy in my writing, so to learn more focus and control, I have been studying (and writing) haiku. The Haiku Handbook has been an engaging resource for me in those efforts. Each of the book's five sections contains a wealth of ideas and information that both challenges and inspires:

Part One: Haiku Old and New [A great introduction to the experience of haiku and to Japanese Masters. The "Why Haiku" is helpful in clarifying one's purpose for writing such brief poetry.]

Part Two: The Art of Haiku [Natural themes, the form and craft of haiku; this is the section that I like best, and I repeatedly refer back to these pages. I especially enjoy how the author discusses the difference in Japanese and English languages.]

Part Three: Teaching Haiku [How to teach haiku writing to children, lesson plan included]

Part Four: Before and Beyond Haiku [Haiku and its uses]

Reference Section [With Season-Word List & Glossary]

Overall, this is a worthy product for anyone who wishes to delve into haiku more deeply than the introduction that most Westerners receive.

Blyth's Haiku Seasons books and Higginson's guide to reading and writing "haiku" in English are two of the necessary books to begin to understand what haiku is all about. I have a difficult time with the idea that a tiny poem written in any of the Romance languages--esp. English-- could be called a "haiku," even though the author might include season words and even the 5/7/5 syllable count. I would much rather call them epigrams, because they simply cannot give you the effect of a Japanese haiku. Anyone who argues otherwise is simply fooling themselves, and you. Given all of that, however, Blyth and Higginson are good books to have on the shelf. Blyth, I believe, is the better writer/translator and his sense of chronology and history is stronger. In addition he gives hundreds of translated gems to admire from Basho, Issa, Buson, and others. He also doesn't try to convince you that haiku can be written in English. Higginson is the warmer writer and his generosity to the reader is apparent from the beginning, so practioners will find him perhaps more useful than Blyth in a practical sense. I disagree with Higginson's history of English language "haiku"--there are some important people he simply leaves out, but he more than makes up for the omissions in other chapters. Both writers impart an enthusiasm for the subject to their readers. If you're building a haiku library and would like a great start, Blyth's four volume set and Higginson's Haiku Handbook are the way to go.

There are very few books on how to write in any idiom. This book explains the hows and whys of haiku. What it takes to get started and to continue to write. I have found this useful in my writing that is not associated with haiku or poetry. This book is a lot of fun to read, and is not stuffy and boring as text books are. It will serve all writers well.

This book really helped me as both a reader and writer of poetry. Through the author I was able to understand the real essence of Haiku; something that I seemed to have missed when I studied it in grade-school! This book not only shows where the form came from, but how it has evolved over time and through different cultures. For anyone who wants to understand the form for themselves, either to use it, teach it or just appreciate it, I highly recommend the book. (the sections on lesson planning are both interesting and helpful, whether or not you want to teach a class!)

I've evolved into an unschooler myself. This book does a great job of showing how it is so successful. It's so counter culture, it helps to have an encouraging story like this to refer to. Sometimes I think of their family when I have my own self doubts.

great to ease your mind

this book was, and is, very helpful to me as a new unschooling mom. the experience she offers as a teacher is invaluable to compare with fears we all face about whether our children are learning "enough". i also love to be able to see the full scope of life learning her children have experienced over time! it is very easy to read and follow without feeling overwhelmed by the information. well worth purchasing.

I've been homeschooling my son for a year and a half and ran into some difficulties which sent me back to the books. Alison McKee's book is the best by far on unschooling. She shares her own failures and fears candidly and reassuringly. I learned that when things aren't working out, it's best to back off and let the child lead ("show me the way" as McKee says). My confidence is back and I'm no longer worrying about "keeping up." My son is much happier that I have eliminated the busywork.

I'm not an unschooler, but it still was helpful

I read this book after it was suggested to me by some unschoolers in my homeschooling group. It didn't convert me to an unschooling philosophy, but I still found it to be a quality book about homeschooling.

The author had worked in the public school system before she homeschooled her own children, and she gives a lot of insights on the way schools so often discourage children and stifle their natural love of learning. I had no doubt as I read her story that her children were happy, successful, and well-adjusted individuals because of the freedom they were given all of their lives to learn in their own way, unhindered.

However, I still am left with some doubts about whether or not this would work for everyone. Were her children more self-motivated than the average child? This also took place in the eighties, before the internet, hi-tech computer games, etc. Would it be as easy today to create such a home environment conducive to learning, or would you have to have an "unplugged" household with no cable TV, no internet, and no complex computer games in order for the children to not get distracted from real learning? I notice that television is never mentioned in this book, so I wonder if this family even had one.

She definitely does not try to "whitewash" unschooling, however. At one point, her 14-year-old son tells her he's bored, and that she's responsible for his education. She gives him the choice of enrolling in public school, following a boxed cirriculum, or finding something on his own. Given that choice, he does manage to find something to study that he absolutely loves and gets back on track.

In summary, this is an excellent book for anyone interested in unschooling, and also helpful for anyone who believes that homeschooling in general is a better option than traditional schooling.

I stumbled across this book accidentally, and boy was I pleasantly surprised. Taylor's book is a fun, lively, short (that's a good thing, so students will read it), and most importantly, filled with outstanding suggestions. In a loving and positive way, he tells students that college is THEIR opportunity, and nobody is going to hand them anything, they need to go for it themselves. He then gives numerous concrete suggestions, ranging from the very broad (form study teams, avoid negative people) to the very specific (like wash up -- and believe me, plenty of college students need to hear that!), and everything in between. I've suggested this book to dozens of college freshmen and they LOVE it -- they say it motivated them to take responsibility for their college studies and to do well. I think every college freshman should be required to read this book. Nice work, Mr. Taylor.

Not just for students!

It's been quite a while since I started reading a book and had a hard time putting it down...Morris Taylor broke that streak with this witty and engaging manual! In addition to the organized structure and flow, Mr. Taylor packs some nuggets of wisdom and insight and delivers them in a bold, yet fun way. This is one you'll want to keep handy and pick up over and over again...though you may not need to because the principles and strategies mentioned have a way of sticking in your mind. I highly recommend this to anyone who is serious about being successful-in any area of their life.".

Morris Taylor has written a book that teaches time-tested strategies for success in a very conversational, easy-to-read style. This book is a treasure trove of wisdom that is essential for any college student, but can also be applied to business and personal life as well. I wish I had this book years ago when I attended college. It is a "must-read" for anyone who wants to achieve success in life!

This book is a perfect example of "good things come in small packages." While short- you could read it in an afternoon - the strategies discussed will greatly benefit you not just during college, but your entire life, if you apply them.

The strategies include essential personal and study habits, and the skills you should acquire to give yourself an edge during and after college life.

Like the author, I wish I had this book in my possession before starting college, and made use of the strategies presented. I wholeheartedly recommend anyone currently enrolled or will be attending college soon to get the book, read it, and apply its lessons... Your college career and life will certainly be more fulfilling.

Something every student should have.

I am a high school teacher and recently during a break from class, several students noticed "How to Create a Magical College Life" sitting on my desk. They wanted to know what kind of book it was. I simply told them to read the book cover. After each student read the back, I was stunned to see just from them reviewing the back cover how excited and inquisitive they became about the book. I'm sold that this book is a must have for anyone young or old who is serious about being successful in college. Taylor has made this book easy to read with practical, real life examples that everyone can identify with. I especially like his approach to time management, goal setting, and visualization. I highly recommend this book to be apart of every serious students' library.
