Give Your Child A Superior MindReview Date: 2008-11-16
Step by Step how to build from one concept to anotherReview Date: 2008-02-12
This book was written several decades ago. As a result, while it is still as insightful on pre-k education and very directive on what parents should teach their children but some of the writing style is out of date
Buy it!Review Date: 2006-12-20
book. Buy it and read it through first, before attempting to teach your child/children. It is excellent, especially the math section. It is one of those rare books that not only teaches you to teach the skill, but also to give your students a comprehension of the skill. Both of my girls
are in the top half of their classes in math and reading!
Please, BUY IT!
I Can't Recommend This Book Highly Enough!Review Date: 2005-06-29
When I got this book, I immediately began the exercises, followed the suggestions, etc. My son blossomed, and when his baby brother became old enough, he too, learned well and quickly. They could both read as soon as they could talk! They could do math in their heads, they could play chess, as well, of course, as tic-tac-toe. When they went to kindergarten, they were writing, reading at about a second grade level, and were quite creative and artistic. I was amazed and delighted!
They were also ahead of their peers in motor skills and eye-hand coordination (a miracle, since the males in their father's family tended to be about two years behind in motor development!)
I believe firmly that this book allowed my sons to become the geniuses they are -- with IQs in the .003% of the population -- that is one in 333, if my math is correct. I could be wrong. Nevertheless it stood them in good stead in school, then in getting jobs. They are both in computer work,, but in very different areas. I am always amazed at their vocabulary, their ability to articulate, and their understanding of the "guts" of computers, etc.
Like I said, this book is a must, especially if your child has the beginnings of anything that could become a learning disabiity.

I think his How To Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons is a better program than Hooked on Phonics because it's very concentrated and comprehensive at the same time. You end up teaching your child his/her abc's, rhyming, reading, and writing the letters--all at the same time and in 100 lessons. What a great idea! I speak more on that book under its review.

I didn't like the ending it was making me hang of the edge of my seat. It made me think about the ending and how Jonas got to elsewhere. She needs more of the ending or the sequel to the book. I do agree about the way she described about not having a sequal though.

This is a beautiful and inspiring way to help children become more aware of our interconnectedness with the elements of nature. It is a lesson in appreciation and awareness of the environment.
The illustrations are moving, if not as childlike as those often found in books for young children.

Excellent Read for Youth Ministers!Review Date: 2003-07-15
The authors describe in detail various measures to be taken that will energize youth in their Christian faith. This title is far from a book of programming ideas, but rather a very readable volume of philosophy and theology on youth ministry. I recommend it highly to all youth pastors, and other Christian professionals who will interact with teenagers on a regular basis.
Great groundwork for youth ministryReview Date: 2005-08-29
I didn't give this book five stars because of the way in which it deals with Mary and some of the extra-biblical assumptions it makes. I found this part to be molded to fit the authors' desired point. Neverthless, this was a fairly minor drawback for me and I believe that every youth minister needs to read this book.
A must read for all ministersReview Date: 2003-07-05
If you are looking for another gimmick in order to make a youth ministry program grow, this book is not for you. If you are looking for a book in how to minister to youth, thier families and the people who work with them, then this needs to be on your shelf.

Improve Writing and Thinking...Review Date: 2008-06-14
Part One: Haiku Old and New [A great introduction to the experience of haiku and to Japanese Masters. The "Why Haiku" is helpful in clarifying one's purpose for writing such brief poetry.]
Part Two: The Art of Haiku [Natural themes, the form and craft of haiku; this is the section that I like best, and I repeatedly refer back to these pages. I especially enjoy how the author discusses the difference in Japanese and English languages.]
Part Three: Teaching Haiku [How to teach haiku writing to children, lesson plan included]
Part Four: Before and Beyond Haiku [Haiku and its uses]
Reference Section [With Season-Word List & Glossary]
Overall, this is a worthy product for anyone who wishes to delve into haiku more deeply than the introduction that most Westerners receive.

Best Book on UnschoolingReview Date: 2007-02-13
I'm not an unschooler, but it still was helpfulReview Date: 2007-03-02
The author had worked in the public school system before she homeschooled her own children, and she gives a lot of insights on the way schools so often discourage children and stifle their natural love of learning. I had no doubt as I read her story that her children were happy, successful, and well-adjusted individuals because of the freedom they were given all of their lives to learn in their own way, unhindered.
However, I still am left with some doubts about whether or not this would work for everyone. Were her children more self-motivated than the average child? This also took place in the eighties, before the internet, hi-tech computer games, etc. Would it be as easy today to create such a home environment conducive to learning, or would you have to have an "unplugged" household with no cable TV, no internet, and no complex computer games in order for the children to not get distracted from real learning? I notice that television is never mentioned in this book, so I wonder if this family even had one.
She definitely does not try to "whitewash" unschooling, however. At one point, her 14-year-old son tells her he's bored, and that she's responsible for his education. She gives him the choice of enrolling in public school, following a boxed cirriculum, or finding something on his own. Given that choice, he does manage to find something to study that he absolutely loves and gets back on track.
In summary, this is an excellent book for anyone interested in unschooling, and also helpful for anyone who believes that homeschooling in general is a better option than traditional schooling.

When my sons were three and one, I saw an ad in "Parents Magazine" about the upcoming book, and ordered it to be delivered as soon as it was ready for the market. It was expensive, in those days, but I was worried about my oldest son, who was not yet talking, although I knew he was quite bright. I learned later that this was genetic, on his father's side, in all males. Nevertheless, when the book came, I started in immediately, and that child was reading before he was talking clearly enough for anyone but me to understand him! He was doing "new math" and playing chess. Since all motor skills were delayed in that same genetic heritage, the physical exercises, done on very-simple-to-make equipment, helped him a lot as well. When he began school, he was already reading at a third or fourth grade level and refused to let me read to him. "I will read to you, Mommy." His little brother followed in his footsteps.
At about fourth grade level, each of them became bored in class and were sent to be evaluated -- they were tested and scored in the genius range, the top one percentile. Each was skipped one grade, and given extra projects, creative things, to do, which enriched their educational experience.
Since I was a single mother, I sacrificed everything I could to give them every opportunity to explore their options, given their potential. They, like most very bright children, jumped from one activity to another, becoming quickly bored with each, but having learned a lot from them. I was told by the educational psychologist who followed their progress with great interest, that this was normal for very bright children. They wanted to experience everything possible. My younger son was so enamored of chess that he was just one step away from being a chess master, at 14, but then he veered off into something else. I think he was afraid of being stuck in that narrow world, and I don't blame him.
Both sons excelled academically and developed normally in every other way, are understanding and generous, take up causes when they see injustices being done, and generally are "good decent men" in their 40s now. They are both working at the high end of Information Technology, creating the newest and greatest as they go. I owe so much to that book, including my own development.
The psychologist so interested in my sons decided to test me as well. I had worked for 18 hours with no sleep, was taking heavy doses of Valium, and was hungry and exhausted when I took my tests (yes a whole pile of them.) I scored one point above my sons, and I think the book had had an effect on me as well, focusing me in the right directions to develop my intelligence into productive and constructive lines of endeavor. I did not tell my sons this until a few years ago when they began to speak as if they were superior to their old mom. HaHa, what a surprise for them! What fun!
You can do nothing more important than give your child all you can for developing his maximum potential as a human being, and using this book is one way to do that. It is easy to use, clear, and FUN. Once you start you can't stop . . . or at least I couldn't.
No matter how much you have to pay, GET THIS BOOK!
