As a beginning yoga student I've been searching for a way to improve my skills and have a great vacation too and this book pointed me in so many great directions-I don't know where to go first! I really love the guest comment section because you get such a great feel for what's unique or special about the retreat. A great book for yoga students of every ability. See you in Peru!

Just reading it makes you feel better!

This book is a very well-organized and well-thought-out guide to the wide spectrum of yoga retreats and workshops available, both in the U.S. and internationally. The introduction includes brief but clear descriptions of the various styles of yoga offered by these centers, enabling you to choose a program that best suits your training and preferences. Each center is profiled in enough depth to give you a sense of its atmosphere as well as the physical particulars (schedule, facilities, meals, etc.) -- some people are looking for a retreat-type environment, while others prefer yoga classes in a livelier resort setting, and this book helps you to avoid making an expensive mistake. The photos are tantalizing, and both the teachers' philosophies and past participants' reactions to each program are described. I hope the author updates the book frequently -- this type of information goes out of date quickly -- but, in my experience, it seemed very accurate (my teacher is active in the Iyengar Yoga community, so I'd already heard about some of these programs). Reading the book is like getting a head start on a yoga vacation, and your only problem will be choosing which of the many wonderful possibilities to sign up for!

Wish I didn't spend the money for this one

I hate to speak poorly of ANYTHING yoga, but this book was disappointing. Most of the vacations are expensive and are limited in number of times offered per year and length of instruction. I've seen most of these listed somewhere in a copy of Yoga Journal magazine. Flip thru one of those before buying this book. It may be better to talk to someone who's done the vacation package before spending the money. Namaste.

The lesson in this book is that even when the school year started off with a lot of apprehension and hesitation for a skinny fourth-grade girl, it ended with knowing herself better and being secure with it. Fourth grade is a time when many students are looking for an identity that will carry them through their schooling years and into their adult life. This book does a good job of showing how a child can cope with the situations around her and become a stronger person.

I did have a few issues with the book however and that is what dropped its rating. While it is short enough for third graders, I would be reluctant to give it to students younger than fifth grade due to some references in the text, including one to PlayBoy. Some of the characters are VERY interesting and I wish they had developed more. Some inconsistencies with numbers and several typos and typesetting errors plagued the book as well.

However, I found it a charming story of a young girl who copes with a bully, and the realization that her best friend treats her like dirt. She is able to stand up for herself without hurting anyone else and know who her true friends are.

Why 4 stars?:
If it weren't for some inappropriate references and poor editing, I would have given the book 5 stars. It is not a fantastic book that everyone needs to read, but there is an important message told that may sink into the minds of a few of our children and help them to grow stronger self-identities.

A great book that speaks to pre-teens in a positive way.

A compelling, exciting must-read for children and teens of all ages. It focuses on a girl, Nora Jean, who expresses what most kids her age are trying to do. She tries to do the right thing, but it doesn't always work out. The book explains about life and the troubles involved in it. Over all, an outstanding book!

Good idea, but badly needs a new edition

The book contains information on a large number of types of "adventure" you might have on a vacation, including some non-typical things like train tours and ballooning. There is very brief information on a number of suppliers of each type of adventure. The commentary provided on each is brief and to the point. I found two problems, one of which was very important--The book is rather dated. It was published in 1995. As a result, there's not even a hint of the internet in it. Also, I suspect some of the suppliers are out of business, or at least have moved on to new address/phone numbers. The other problem is that it is organized by activity. So it is easy to find providers of llama hiking tours (there really is such a thing!) in several states. But if you are going to be in Poughkeepsie for several days, and want to know about adventurous things to do there, the only way to find out is to go through each category of adventure looking for references to Poughkeepsie. I'd wait for an updated edition--And I hope there is such an edition, this is a fine idea.

It was Arthur's last day of school and he was going on a vacation. Arthur was thinking about Buster and then Arthur wants to go swimming. Then D.W. wants to and that night they eat lobster and Arthur said that Buster likes lobster. And that morning they went to the cow festival. On the last day they all had fun.

Our family will be taking this book on vacation to the ocean with us this year! Mr. Brown does a great job of showing kids that it is natural to be disappointed when plans don't work out the way we expected. We have found that this tale of our friend Arthur is a great tool for teaching our young boys to be flexible and find the positive aspects of a situation they did not anticipate. It also serves as a great reminder to parents to have a back-up plan!

Comic or Perverse?

Review Date: 2001-05-21
In this absurb comedy, Christopher Durang makes a bold statement about our violent society, our hunger for sensationlism, and how we have come to view human horror and tragedy as entertainment. Through characters that appear as stereotypes of dysfunction, Durang demonstrates the worst of human nature, amorality and a lack of personal responsibility. The audience is treated to rape, murder, maming, incest, sexual addiction...to name of few...all in the name of "comedy". I didn't find the play funny. Instead, it was very disturbing in the portrayal of a society obsessed with violence and horror...one not that far from the one in which we currently live.

Durang Gets His Bite Back

It's been a rough decade for Christopher Durang. A handful of lukewarm scripts had people wondering if the vicious and yet strangely empathetic edge of his writing had been lost forever. Thankfully, with Betty's Summer Vacation, Durang is back with style. This bizarre allegory about our tendency to turn real-life tragedy into entertainment is right on the money and has all the earmarks of Durang's best scripts: A likeable but ineffectual central character fighting desperately for normality, an insane matriarch, and a cadre of strange characters imbued with an inhuman honesty that is unintentionally brutal, and completely hysterical. This will not be to everyone's taste; there are vile situations played for laughs (including a rape - possibly Durang's most disturbing writing since "The Nature and Purpose of the Universe"), and a healthy dose of absurdism and audience alienation. But if you like to think and laugh and be disgusted all at the same time, pick up Betty's Summer Vacation. If your idea of theatre comedy is, say Run For Your Wife, you best keep running.

These versatile Bible skits come in 3 sections: one for Old Testament, one for New Testament, and one for Biblical theme skits. Permission for copying the skits for performances by the purchasing agency is already granted on the copyright page, thereby saving time and work in preparation for informal performances. Well-organized teaching suggestions accompany the skits. Good resource for Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, mission trips.

Excellent book of skits for praising God!

We have enjoyed using this book of skits at our church both in church and (even more so) in our Summer Vacation Bible School program. The skits flow smoothly. We have used them with live actors and with puppets. Both work with these skits. We also have used them effectively with children under the age of 10 (the book is geared for 10 to adults). We especially appreciated the way some of the skits were directly from Bible stories while others were more in contemporary times but still keeping the truths of the Biblical story.

We live in California, and bought this to for information on Hawaii. Seems to have some good info, as the California portion seems to be right on the mark with what we like to see and do in California.

The information is very good, but we already knew a lot of the California stuff already. We are looking forward to trying out the Hawaii information soon!

If you are not from California, and need to plan a trip here, this is a good tool to have in your planning kit!

I purchased this book for a family road trip we took in 2004. I was really impressed with all it had to offer. It had a section on ways to make the time in the car more enjoyable, what to bring, what to plan for, how to cut down costs, etc. And then it had all of California mapped out so you could quickly look up things to do in every area you planned to visit. There are ratings for what things will cost (admission fees to attractions, lists of hotels and their prices and ratings, camping places and costs and ratings, restaurants ratings and prices, etc.) and Family Fun also rated things on a fun scale (from "fine" to "Family Fun Recommended"), which really helped us to weed out the so-so from the don't miss since we had limited time and money.

We just wanted to get the most out of our vacation. We didn't want to drive by something and miss out because we didn't know it was there. We also needed to plan our budget and research places to stay and things to do. This book was invaluable. I still have it earmarked with little sticky notes for everything we wanted to see. Now it is an historical record of our vacation.

I highly recommend this book and all the Family Fun vacation guides. Their ratings are right on, and they know everything there is to do in the parts of the country that you want to see. Grab a book and hit the road, Jack!
