I am humbled to say that I was blessed with the opportunity to read Place of Sage many years ago - before it was published. Even now, I can vividly recall how deeply Lyn D. Nielsen's story touched my life and my heart.

Now, years later, I have been given a new and unexpected blessing - the opportunity to see and hear the reactions of others that have also been profoundly impacted by Place of Sage.

I have found that the story told in Place of Sage offers young readers insight into adulthood and the difficult decisions one must sometimes make. It also allows older readers the chance to reflect on their lives - and appreciate the moments and choices that have defined who they have become.

Absolutely beautiful!

Lyn has done a wonderful job with this story. It's a beautiful love story, an inspiration for us all. Her description of the area that becomes the focus of the book is stunning. She makes you feel the emotions of the main character without forcing them on you. Many times I was close to tears, and finally gave in at the end. But they were tears from the beauty of the story, not sadness. I highly recommend this book to anyone!

This is the best PNW plant and animal identification book on the market (and I have lot of such i.d. books). Lots of really good color pictures and detailed b/w's. Informative text on life history/cycles. Good index and well-organized. Great for helping children get going on school projects (the Latin names are there, but the text is plain English, flows well, and provides information that interests ordinary persons of all ages who enjoy the out-of-doors). Would make a nice gift for someone new to the area or otherwise interested in the topic.

What a beautiful book!

I fell in love with wild plants at the tender age of 11 when I went to camp with my 5th grade class. We did plant identification and I became intrigued by all the wonderful plants in the NW. WHen I got home I poured through my mom's copy of this book. I had been seeing it on our coffee table since I was like a tot! I fell in love with plants. This book has beautiful color pics of all kinds of wonderful plants and animals. It's awesome!

The comments I'm about to make come from p.xiv of the Introduction of the book:"Recalling that many important things have come to us from the Greeks--democracy, tragedy, the Olympic Games, mathematics, logic, philosophy--Vlastos wonders... if the Greeks really discovered what we now mean by 'science'. ...Even if they were not able to 'grasp the essential genius of the scientific method', they did 'discover the notion of a cosmos 'that is presupposed by the idea of natural science and by its practice.' In fact, the early Greeks had 'the perception of a rational universe'." Similar to the Greeks, Vlastos accomplishes a logical and impartial description and interpretation of Plato's thought, that so many previous commentators have missed. I recommend this book to anyone that has deep interest in Greek thought in general and Plato in particular.

In this absolutely splendid book, Vlastos traces the origins of the idea of the cosmos and, indeed, of nature itself as a subject for intellectual inquiry. He also helps the reader make more sense of Plato's Timaeus than a casual first reading might ever suggest is possible. The book is a perfect melding of scholarship with Vlastos's gift for conveying big ideas to a broad audience.

Cases in Sucessful Preventive Medicine - Injury Control
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-07
Injuries; unintentional, suicidal and homicidal; remain the leading cause of years of life lost and of disability for children, and a leading problem for the elderly in the United States.

Traumatic episodes of scald burns from hot water heaters, conflagrations and chemical poisoning associated with dropped lit cigarettes, near- and drownings around improperly gated or fenced home swimming pools, and easily available "non-safety packaged" firearms tragedies- these are examples of the thousands of annually preventable consumer product related injuries and deaths. And yet, aside from the many books on the statistics and epidemiology of injury, or on descriptive or anaytical reports with normative recommendations for action, there are few that illustrate, as does Political Approaches.. the "how to's" for successful legislation and advocacy so effective in the history of leadership in public health and medicine.

Each case study of how the " injury prevention docs " did it is followed by a complete set of useable references and by a follow-up ' informal' interview with the expert.

While this book was written almost ten years ago, the stories show the constants of historical personalities, values and events common to various historical settings of medicine and public health that make the differences for saving lives and limbs.

Dr. Berman, an early pioneer from the new generation of researchers, practitioners and educators, visions injuries as preventable, not random events nor fate, and shows the reader how to lead on the sometimes lonesome but invigorating road of prevention of injury disabilities and deaths.

This engaging and colorful account of the history of U.S. food regulation provides excellent perspective for better understanding the recent spate of high-profile, food regulation trade disputes between the U.S.and Europe, and within Europe, such as the "Banana Wars", "British Beef", and "Genetically modified corn" incidents. A must-read for anyone who who has interest in the unique nature and psychology of government actions in dealing with issues around "our daily bread". This book appears to have been subjected to a very rigorous "peer review" and I expect it will become a classic reference work.

This book is great for the WPA expert or for the novice like myself. The body of work represented in the book opens your eyes to a subject matter that seems largely overlooked as serious art. Nevertheless, the volume of work produced during this period and the number of people reached by this work is truly amazing.

A wonderful book of Works Progress Administration posters. Only about two thousand of these survive from the millions printed and 280 are shown in color. They are not posters in the billboard size that everyone is familiar with but mostly small twenty-two by fourteen inches, quickly designed and printed by silkscreen.

Because they were easy and cheap to produce any government or civic department could use the medium, from the New York Foreign Trade Zone, the Seattle Children's Theatre to Stop the Spread of Syphilis, the design styles are just as varied from the whimsical to the stark graphic statement.

Author DeNoon has done his research and explains how the WPA poster division worked, other contributors provide more extra detail. The back of the book has a Portfolio of eight artists. The work of the WPA ended in 1943 and fifteen of their war posters are shown. If you want to follow the story have a look at 'Dig for Victory' by William Bird and Harry Rubenstein, this informative book has 150 posters designed for the Home Front.

Social historians and graphic artists will enjoy 'Posters of the WPA' and incidentally I would suggest that anyone interested in book design gets a copy. The book (designed by Henry Vizcara) is an excellent example of how a graphic visual book should look, the grid design, column widths, typography of the headlines, text and captions, use of white space, paper and printing all work together to produce this lovely book.

This is a beautiful book, replete with high-quality illustrations and in-depth studies of all the works displayed in the 2007 exhibition it illustrates. It is a treasure trove of information on early Flemish painting, stressing technical as well as stylistic details, recalling the historical context of every work and showing how the image of man was, little by little, superseding that of god.

This book is destined to become a collector's piece. Undoubtedly one of the best recent art publications, as far as illustrations and scientific research are concerned.

I instantly felt a great spirit of humility in Cal Pierce's account of how the Healing Rooms have been re-established. This book is not so much about Cal Pierce, or even the Healing Rooms, and definitely not about some hyped up philosophy or phony "name it and claim it" ideals. It is not about the seemingly select few that have "healing ministries" as if healing belonged to them. Healing belongs to God, and it operates wherever His presence is! This is an account of what happens when God's people simply understand and believe who He is as Jesus the Healer, and make room for Him to work. I believe you will be challenged and blessed by this book -- let it plant the seeds of pure faith into your heart and mind, and come to know our Great Savior and Physician better. You can visit [...] for more info on this ministry, or to locate a nearby Healing Room.

The beginnings of an awesome healing ministry!

At first sight, you might think that the author was just copying some formula used 80 years ago. But, as you read on, you discover Cal Pierce's heart and the sincerity of God's call on his life. You quickly see that this book is the manifestation of God raising up an army of believers that are going to tear up Satan's kingdom and destroy his weapon of sickness!
This book takes you on the spiritual journey of one man as he journeys from the promise to the possession of that promise. It's good to know that there are men and women of God that are not afraid to "walk on water" and step out boldly and say, "God has a calling on my life". He also delves into the healing power of God's Holy Spirit through them that believe in the name of Jesus Christ. I was truly inspired upon reading this book.
If you have a call of God on your life, you need to read this book. If you need a healing, you need to read this book. If you want to be aware of the coming healing revival that God is getting ready to pour out over the US, you NEED to read this book.

Fun Stories with Great Messages

Review Date: 2004-10-10
A PRIDE OF AFRICAN TALES is a collection of folktales which have their roots in several West African nations including Ghana, Cameroon, and Nigeria. Each story is preceded by a brief introduction which gives readers a little background on the history and origin of the particular tale. Although I enjoyed all of the stories in the collection, my two favorites were "Shansa Mutoungo Shima" and "The Roof of Leaves." "Shansa Mutoungo Shima" tells the story of Bwalya, a young woman who learns an important lesson about judging people by the way they look. In "The Roof of Leaves" a married couple has an argument followed by a misunderstanding, and both of them must learn an important lesson about swallowing their pride and more importantly about forgiveness.

In the introduction, author Donna L. Washington states that the stories which make up this collection are meant to be told not read, and she encourages readers to bring the stories to life. This book is a "must have" for any child's library, as it is the type of book that can be read over and over again. The book is well organized and the stories are diverse and will appeal to both boys and girls. Washington has compiled a wonderful collection which pairs West African Folktales with a splash of history. Additional resources are provided at the end of the book for readers wanting to learn more about the origins of a particular story and for further reading. James Ransome's eye-catching illustrations add yet another dimension to this collection, and I was impressed by the way the illustrations for each story were consistent with the setting in which it took place.

EXCELLENT BOOK

I don't mean to take anything away from the compiler of these
tales (Donna Washington) because they are a fine group and
she does a wonderful job of retelling them. But I am a collector
of children's books and I collect with the quality of llustrations in mind. So my review is mostly about the illustrations.

James Ransome has had the happy fortune to often be associated with books of really high quality, and I would have to say that of all those that I am familiar with, this is probably his best. It is a great coming together of story, illustration, & printing that makes collecting children's books fun and satisfying.

The illustrations are vivid, lush, and provide a real sense of
place. Ransome captures the villages, the market place, the
forests & grasslands of Africa that I have found equalled only by illustrator Trina Schart Hyman.

A wonderful bonus to the book is the map in the front and
the "Story Notes and Further Reading" in the back. A perfect
book for a school library.
