I bought two of this item. My step mother wanted to find this storybook for a long time friend. So one for my stepmom and one for her friend. Both books arrived in first class condition and the subject matter was exactly what was wanted. Worth the price and I'm thankful that such literature is still printed. I was surprised to find the story was about early Nove Scotia and it's people.

Carries me away. Great read. This guy can write...has a great future. It is entrancing, haunting. I wanted it to go on. In addition to the lyrical euphoria, this gives a great perception of the life and times surrounding the historic conflict and relocation. I am encouraging all my friends to put down their heavy, current books and revive the other side of their brains.

Evangeline by Longfellow

Evangeline is Longfellow's masterpiece. The poem begins with
the famous "forest primeval" . The reader is taken to the home
of the Acadian farmers and the famous village reminescent
of a variety of tradespeople. The work describes whole
communities dispersed and separated from the homeland in the
mid-1700s. Evangeline and Gabriel flee home and experience
the pain of separation despite the fact that Gabriel seems to
keep a step ahead during a major part of the story. The work
attests to the beauty and strength of a woman's devotion.
In many ways, our fate and destiny tend to be random events which are out of our immediate control. This work traces the
fate of important characters living in a state of uncontrolled
flux and uncertainty . Readers of the poem will discover
how the story unfolds and the difficult choices presented
at various stages of Longfellow's journey. The work is
written utilizing an advanced vocabulary typical of the
writers during this period .

I heard about this book from my mom a few weeks ago after I went to see the movie Serendipity. I told her about the plot of the two people in love searching for one another and just missing every time. She said it reminded her of another story, Evangeline. Since i attend an engineering school I am always very eager to read books with real meaning behind them, given that all my textbooks focus on is wastewater treatment, biological processes, etc... So given that I wasn't really expecting too much but a relief from textbooks when I picked up this book. Little did I know it was soon to become one of my favorites. I was pleasantly surprised by the Christian influences behind the poem and found myself crying a lot more than I expected. I highly recommend this to anyone who has a great appreciation for well written, romantic poetry and literature.

For all who love Evangeline, this will not disappoint!

I have a passion for Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's lyrical lines of Evangeline. Therefore, I was uneasy in the purchase of Evangeline, A Novel. I shouldn't have been. Finis Fox's insight into the lives, loves and losses of the Acadians is remarkable. He adds to the story lines rather than detracting from them. His words are at once romantic and colorful, lulling you into passive reflection. The emotions are all there, the joy, the pain and the suffering. He does not stray far from Longfellow's poem, using the same names of people and places. It is a story worth reading! It would be worth the price if it were twice as much. I wish it could have been longer, but in staying true to Longfellow, the story moved much the same as did the poem. If you loved Evangeline, you will love this novel as much or maybe more!

It was quite a thrill to find this sequel to "Executive Actions". A great book itself, it left many plot lines open that were finished in "Executive Treason". "Treason" can be read as a stand alone novel but it would be more entertaining if the reader is aware of the story line developed in the first book. Mr. Grossman can really spin an exciting tale. Based on the ending of "Treason", I expect there will be yet a third volume in this series which I look forward to. Great suspense, fast paced action and interesting characters make for a great read.

I pride myself on disciplined reading - not getting carried away like an amateur; reading once a year, jamming through a book at break-neck-speed to the end, and then not reading another book until next year. Once, in a while though, I can't help it. I was doing pretty well through the first part of this book, cruising along at a steady pace a little each night. Then the plot tightens, and sings, and pulls you in - tight. Now I'm flipping page after page deep into the next morning. I got next to no sleep and the next day I was trashed. It was worth it.
It's a raucous fun ride and a great sequel to the first book. If you like history, technology, politics, suspense, murder, conspiracy and betrayl (who doesn't?), you're in for a treat with this one. All thumbs up, WAY up!!!

Frighteningly Topical

I'm the editor of Gary Grossman's EXECUTIVE TREASON. As you might expect, as an editor, I've "seen it all." But when I was handed the manuscript for Gary's first book, EXECUTIVE ACTIONS, I found myself gripped by a thriller written by a person who can only be described as a benchmark talent. As tempted as I am to compare him to Tom Clancy, and David Baldacci, I can't because Gary has authoritatively put his own high-powered stamp in the thriller market. Yes, his voice is that distinctive. The others may be more famous, but in the quality of his writing and the power of his story, he's their equal.

I literally could not put down the manuscript for EXECUTIVE ACTIONS until I had finished it. As good as EXECUTIVE ACTIONS is, its sequel, EXECUTIVE TREASON, is even better. Like EXECUTIVE ACTIONS, Gary has fashioned in EXECUTIVE TREASON a first-class thriller that is frighteningly topical. The characters are as alive as the people you work and live with. The villains have a depth to the extent that if you're not careful, you'll find yourself sympathizing with them. Best of all, EXECUTIVE TREASON is a book that stands proud on its own. But, if you want the full story, you'll definitely want to pick up EXECUTIVE ACTIONS.

Certainly you'd expect me to be enthusiastic about Gary's books. But, you don't have to take my word for it. EXECUTIVE TREASON is turning into the publishing world's equivalent of a stealth missile. From Massachusetts to California and everywhere in between, here's what talk show hosts around the country are saying about EXECUTIVE TREASON:

"Executive Treason is immensely interesting for everyone who listens to radio talk radio; doubly interesting for those of us who work in it!"--Charly Butcher, host Morning News with Charly Butcher, WOWO, Ft. Wayne, IN

"Intriguing! It's about time someone finally wrote a book about us! Grossman keeps all plates spinning. Executive Treason is one book you won't be able to put down."--Gary Sutton, talk show host, WSBA York, PA

"What a book! I'm completely struck. Executive Treason couldn't be anymore of a mirror of what's going on in the world today."-- Doug Walker, talk show host, WRGA, Rome, GA

"Executive Treason is tremendous. An excellent read. It follows the equally excellent Executive Actions and you have to check out Elliott Strong's website. It's brilliant!"--Ed Jones, talk show host, KBEM-FM. Minneapolis, MN

"Like a fine meal, you'll want to relish Executive Treason."--Leland
Franklin, talk show host, WHBU-AM, Indianapolis, IN

"For people who enjoy political thrillers, you'll love Executive Treason."--Stephanie Ross, talk show host, KWIX-AM, Kansas City, MO

"Ripped from the headlines!"-- Hank Stolz, talk show host, WTAG-AM, Paxton, MA

"Executive Treason takes you inside the world of politics. An important
book."-- Al Lerner, talk show host, USA Radio Network

"A powerful new thriller!"-- Alvin Augustus Jones, host, WCBQ, Raleigh, NC

"Executive Treason is huge. Mondo. Engrossing. Au courant. Thoroughly recommended. Start reading it and you'll be late for things!"-- Rosemary Chalmers, talk show host, KSCO-AM, Monterery, CA

"Executive Treason will keep you on the edge of your seat and up all night! Fascinating!"-- Ron Thulin, talk show host, KAHL-AM, San Antonio, TX

"Grossman is in great company. I don't normally have fiction writers on. The only other -- Dean Koontz. But Executive Treason is so intriguing, so plausible that it's not your standard fiction!"-- Scott Lefler, talk show
host, WLVL, Buffalo, NY

"Executive Treason is so timely, so well researched. Looks like it's right
off the front pages!"-- David Allen, talk show host, WJGR, Jacksonville, FL

Another Winner From Grossman!

to discover his identity.
In the meantime the administration is reeling from another crisis.President Henry Lamden suffers a near fatal heart attack
and Vice-President Morgan Taylor has to become the acting President. The White House stays under attack from talk show
host Elliott Strong. He is trying to make General Robert Woodley Bridgeman the populist nominee for President and Speaker of the House Duke Patrick the Vice-Presidential nominee.
Air Force One is sabotaged and crashes near a terrorist base in Indonesia.President Morgan and several key figures in the Administration are held hostage by the terrorists.
This is an exciting book that has many exciting situations.I
certainly enjoyed reading it.The ending allows the book to finish with a bang.

Dwight Zimmerman's comments about Gary Grossman's writing and storytelling talents are absolutely right. It's inevitable that Mr. Grossman will be compared to other writers in this genre, but he has a special ability to make characters and plots disturbingly, frighteningly real. You begin his books knowing they're fiction, but within a few pages you're living through something that's so believable that it feels like fact. True -- you're definitely "escaping" with a great read, but the quality of the writing requires absolutely no "suspension" of disbelief. You can't go wrong with his work.

This book is fantastic. The inside story of the remaking of TV news (for the better!) by Primo would alone be worth the time, but it is the stories and anecdotes about the reporters that makes this book impossible to put down. With many laugh out loud moments along the way, you will be sorry when this one ends.

Eyewitness Newsman is a pleasure. I've been recommending this book to everyone I know.

Mr. Primo was the inventer of contemporary TV news, and his book is a concise and easy to read history written by someone who was there, and who was responsible for many of the innovations which make TV news interesting and relevant.

As a bonus, the book includes inside information on some familiar names Primo worked with including Geraldo Rivera, Howard Cosell, and Tom Snyder.

Eyewitness Newsman should be required reading for anyone interested in the Television News Business.

Al Primo provides insightful analysis on news coverage. For example, it highlights some priceless examples of how to beat back the competition in this cut throat line of work. It is also quite instructive on how to grab at viewers and build brand loyalty. How Primo created both the Eyewitness News format and an exceptional, although quite eccentric, team of reporters is very entertaining to boot.

This book is hilarious. Tells the story behind the story of how a motley crew of news reporters changed the way TV broadcasts news. Some like Geraldo Rivera, Howard Cosell and Joan Lunden went on to become broadcast icons. The stories about Geraldo threatening riots in the street, Howard Cosell's missing toupee, and Roger Grimsby's outragegous one the air cynical snipes at other reporters left me in stiches.

Al Primo was the maestro behind the scenes. Not only did he provide the innovative approach that moved news away from the set piece studio with stilted empty suits "reading" the news in front of camera, he had his hands full herding the cats... Not to mention tempering the inflated egos of his new breed of diverse, in your face, reporters. Before cable and reality TV there was "Reality News," thanks to Al Primo and the Eyewitness News Team.

A most enjoyable read.

Real-world advice in a well-considered framework

Feed Your Family Right! offers the best of two worlds: practical advice from a real-world mom combined with a well-considered, scientifically- grounded framework for success.

Many diet and exercise books assume we all have three hours a day to train and have the knowledge and discipline to eat a perfect diet.

Zied, however, does a terrific job of balancing the everyday demands of work and family with the goal of raising healthy children and being healthy ourselves.

Feed Your Family Right! is a very readable book. I enjoyed reading it, have already put its advice to work and have given it as a gift to my wife for the holidays so that we can both be on the same page!

As a new mom and a registered dietition myself I am always looking for great nutrition advice that applies to real life for my family and my clients. This book is filled will wonderful information that targets families and even specifies the needs for specific subgroups like babies, teens, men and women. It even addresses pregnancy needs. After reading this book I started recommending it to my clients that are in charge of their families diet and need a good at home resource. I love that it is written by a registered dietition who is trained to provide tis advice rather than other authors of books that are trying to push a fad diet or quick fix plan. It is simply a "must have" for any family trying to take charge of their health.

I'm a registered dietitian in Connecticut, and I've read Zied's book. In fact, I make it a point to keep up with all her work in the media--whether on paper, the Internet, or national TV--because she's one-of-a-kind and truly a gifted nutrition expert. I counsel patients privately, and I encourage them to read Feed Your Family Right! because I know it will help their families. What family doesn't need a positive boost with eating better? Food should be good to eat and healthful. This book will help you with that.

As a new family with a young child, we have obsessively been trying to educate ourselves about how to create a healthier and more nutritious household and family lifestyle. My husband and I recently found Mrs. Zied's book, and it struck so many chords with us. It is so obvious from the anecdotes and insights, that Elisa is speaking from her own vast experience, not just her own obviously immense expertise.

The book covers so many aspects of nutrition and age groups, that we were able to share her advice with our parents, siblings, children and even our grand parents. The section focusing on health conditions that can be addressed with proper diet was invaluable. For any family trying to establish a "plan" for healthy living, this is a "must read."

Zied's meal plans and recipes also made implementing her ideas so much easier - but, also in a much more flexible manner than most nutrition programs.

Elisa's style manages to mix in many humorous and interesting anecdotes, while imparting important messages. But, unlike many other nutrition books, she did this without being "preachy" or cretaing a difficult read. Frankly, this was one of the easiest books to digest (no pun intended...) of any in its genre. We're so impressed by these insights that we've already bought Zied's other book "So What Can I Eat?!" hoping to add to our knowledge base.

This short and very practical pamphlet is the best quick read on dealing with kids who have been affected by fetal alcohol. Malbin writes clearly, with poetry but no syrup, and she reframes the very difficult behavior that often manifests in kids with FAS/E so that those who love them and/or care for them can develop attitudes that really help the kids, can cope with the disability, and can see beyond it. The author went through the fires of hell to be able to write this book, and every word is a treasure.

I liked this book a lot. It's a big book with 8.5xll inch pages with the small text formatted into two columns per page. It covers a broad spectrum of fundraising for nonprofit topics: annual giving programs, board development, sponsorships, special events, major gift solicitation, planned giving, and capital campaigns. I suspect this book will be of tremendous help to anyone trying to develop a successful fundraising program for their nonprofit. Also, the reader is informed that it has been used as a textbook in various classes on fundraising.

My favorite chapters were (1) philanthropy, (2) roles of players, (3) the development office, (8) prospect research, (14) capital campaigns, (15) planned giving, (17) fundraising consultants, and (18) career options. The chapters are purposefully short, but they provide wonderful introductory material on their topics. Bibliographic material is provided so the reader can easily locate material that covers these topics in more depth.

I thought Chapter 4 (technology) was weak. I got the impression from reading it that I was reading a term paper from a high school student. I didn't feel as thought the authors were writing from firsthand experiences. Why were calculators and adding machines added to the list? Anybody who uses MS Office or similar program would know to use a spreadsheet program to do what a calculator or adding machine would do. Bottom line: this chapter could have been greatly improved so a nonprofit can save major bucks. Also, workers today are expected to know how to use a PC and the software that runs on it. If they can't, then don't hire them. NEVER consider paying someone to train them how to use a PC!

I had problems with chapters 5, 6 and 7. I thought Chapter 5 should have been much more detailed as to what a fundraising plan includes and how to design one. This was not done. And I thought Chapter 5 also should have covered direct mail, telemarketing, and the importance of building relationships as elements of a good fundraising plan. Then chapters 6 and 7 could have picked up where Chapter 5 left off. As these chapters are currently written, there really is no connection between the three - and in my humble opinion I think there should be.

I would reorder chapters 8 and 9 so the material on prospect research is covered after the reader is introduced to major gift fundraising. It just seems more logical to me to do it that way.

Chapter 13 could be improved a bit. Nonprofits waste a considerable amount of money on having fancy brochures created. And the authors seem to condone this. Today so much money and volunteer time can be saved by posting online in the form of Web pages what used to be printed. In the old days for-profits used to create fancy brochures. Now they give the prospect a business card with a Web site address on it. The prospect goes online to examine the relevant Web pages. Nonprofits can do the same thing. Why weren't Web sites covered in Chapter 13 (publications)? You try creating the content for a Web site and you will learn real quickly that Web sites are electronic publications.

And then there is Chapter 16. I'm not sure why this one was included. Sounds like membership organizations (trade associations) do their fundraising in a very similar way to church fundraising. It doesn't take rocket science to line up the congregation and hose them down for gifts. The same holds true for trade associations. I think I would have left this one out.

Even though I am somewhat critical of this book, I admit that I am being picayune. I am just rambling the thoughts that flipped off the tip of my tongue. This book is big, heavy, and full of good content. Give it a read. It will probably help you immensely in putting together an annual giving program for your nonprofit. Always remember that successful fundraising begins and depends on a good Board. 5 stars!

Although I have never met the author of this book, I felt as though I had. I, myself, have experienced the same feelings of desperation and remorse and finally was able to find the path of hope to a truly meaningful way of life. I would suggest this book, not only to the person who questions whether or not he/she is an alcoholic, or even to the person is 100% sure. I would suggest it to anyone who been affected by the disease, and is in search of answers to questions that baffle us all. Thanks to the author for helping me to be a little more honest with myself.

The book is extremely comprehensive and well written, the best I have found on this subject. Its material has been very extensively researched. I am grateful to Dale for chapter two that provided me with a personal introspect of "The Alcoholic Mind", it helped tremendously to understand where all this came from in me, and for what I will always need to be on guard.

I love it. I got it for my dad after he had a stroke. He had always been a huge fan of the Jumble - did it every day in the paper. After his stroke, he was pretty wiped out and couldn't see very well. This was perfect. It was nice to come into the hospital every day and see another jumble filled out or partially filled out. The print is so big - one jumble per page - that it made it a lot easier on him. And of course the puzzles are really cool.

Love this!

I use these Jumbles in my English classroom on a daily basis, both as extra credit and team-building exercises. The students love the challenge of solving these puzzles, and the best part: they don't realize they are building vocabulary.

My Mom loves Jumble, and this book delivers the goods! Great deal compared to the smaller Jumble books. It could use some more of the challenge puzzles at the end though.

I was thrilled with this book. It was bought as a gift and was a great choice! The book has over 500 full page jumbles, each 81/2 by 11 inches in size. Worth every penny.

Thank goodness they keep thinking up puzzles

My husband and I have done 1-2 Jumble puzzles every morning of our 15 year marriage. Some are easy, some are so hard that we spend the morning thinking and then going back to it. We have differing ways of approaching it - I must be looking at the letters to make a word, he keeps the letters in his head while solving it. It must reflect how our brains solve problems - he's an engineer, I'm a writer. The picture puzzles are usually clever and amusing. I like this much better than crossword puzzles - I'm not sure why because I like words. These are mostly words we all recognize, you wouldn't think they would be so hard. Keeps the synapses snapping!

I was saddened to read about Christines struggle and eventual death of cystic fibrosis. This book does a great job of showing you the decline, and we watch as her lungs deteriorate until there is no quality of life left. It was awful because she loved life so much and knew what was happening to her and what she was missing out on.
Some of the dialogue was a little tedious in the recreations so I would have done wothout some of that-but Christines beauty and strength really shined through.

I have read the story and was brought to tears - but with so much laughter - Chris had something people try and get in their whole entire lives. Jackie I have somewhat of an understanding in having a child that is ill from a very young age. Chris is an insperation to parents and children. My son has had chronic asthma since he was four yrs old - and then 6 months ago he was diagnosed with a tumor on his spine the size of an orange. He went through surgery - all is well. The terror you must have felt - doing the hospital thing for years - I look up to you and your daughter - your book was very inspiring - makes the "I feel sorry for myself" feelings go away

I have read this book so many times that I had to buy a second copy-I now own the hardcover and softcover editions! I felt a 'kinship' with Christine from the very first page---we shared the same first name, was born around the same time, loved the same music and I was very familiar with the places Jacquie Gordon wrote about in this wonderful book. For anyone who grew up in the seventies this book will ring a familiar bell. You read of struggles, illness, but most of all you learn that Christine LIVED! Christine rung every ounce she could out of life and she certainly grasped the brass ring! She is a true inspiration to us all! This book brought a richness to my life and I thank Mrs. Gordon for sharing such a wonderful tribute. Christine (in her stardust) must still be singing!

I first read this book when I was in 5th grade and fell in love with it the first time I read it. Since then, I have read this book several times and it is one of my favorite books because there is so much one can learn from the lives of the people in the book, especially from Christine, a girl who has cystic fibrosis. What makes me read it time after time and keeps my attention is the strength and courage of one family and especially Christine. It is so encouraging when you can read someone's story like the one in Give Me one Wish and know that she was able to keep such a positive attitude and not let her illness "get the best of her". The lessons that can be learned from this book will stay with you for the rest of your life and so will the impact of this book. The person that wrote the book was Christine's mom and the story she tells from the journal entries of Christine's to evoking the emotions that Christine had are amazing. This is both an incredibly inspiring book and an incredibly sad book. It makes me cry every time I read it. All I can say is, incredible.

I can't even begin to describe what an impact this book has had on me. I read it for the first time in 6th grade, and since then my entire frame of mind has changed. I've found that I really love things like Monty Python, 80s punk rock, the Muppets, and so much more. So it (this book) has changed me a lot in that way, but it also is such an inspiration because of the fact that Christine never really let her cystic fibrosis pull her down into the dumps. She had "spunk and a spirit" for life, and that in itself is something to admire. In the dozens of times that I've read my copy of this incredible story, I've laughed, I've cried, and I've felt like I can actually identify with Chris...she was a regular girl who just happened to have a fatal disease. Her mom (Jaquie Gordon, the author) caputured Chris's life in such an amazing way, and I wish I could thank her for being so willing to write about it and changing my outlook on life.

A clear look at gun control

Although dated in some sections, the compilation of articles on the various gun control topics provides a reasoned and fact based discussion.

Everyone will disagree with some recommendations but the authors provide the reasoning behind their recommendations. It will give you something to ponder.

A definite read if you want to be armed with the facts on gun control.

Guns for the law-abiding

Each chapter in this powerful volume will help the readers cut through the rhetoric and sensationalism that frequently surrounds the gun control debate.

Written by the leading experts in law, criminology and medicine, this volume includes such headings as "Arms and the Woman"; "Doctors and Guns," further rebutting the arguments that guns are a public health menace; and "Children and Guns," dissecting the contentious and timely issue of guns and violence in our schools. It compliments David Kopel's previous masterpiece, The Samurai, the Mountie, and the Cowboy: Should America Adopt the Gun Controls of Other Democracies? honored as the 1993 Book of the Year by the American Society of Criminology's Division of International Criminology.

This expertly written book should occupy a place in the library of all citizens genuinely interested in the topic of gun and violence research and in understanding the fallacies of gun control as a public health issue.

Attorney, scholar and criminologist, David Kopel, should be commended for editing and compiling this comprehensive yet highly readable masterpiece.

After reading John Lotts, "More Guns Less Crime,"(which I highly recommend) I then picked up this one, and found that this book also suggests gun control solutions which at least make some sense. "Guns: Who Should Have Them", struck a chord with me here, because the suggested solutions don't affect law abiding citezens nearly as much as current and proposed legislation, and focuses on the criminals. I would ask anyone on one side or the other of the gun debate to at least be knowlegable about what the effects of waiting periods, and permissions laws really are. This book covers it all.

Everyone in America should read this book!!!

I can't stress it enough - this book may be one of the most important books for all voting Americans to read today. This slices right through the rhetoric that the news media employ to confuse Americans about gun control and stir up hysteria about guns. This book thoughtfully and thoroughly dismantles every major argument for gun control and reveals the dangerous flaws in all recent federal gun-control legislation. Whether you're a gun lover, gun hater, or something in between, you should read this book!

An objective review of the literature and law of gun control

David Kopel's second major book on the efficacy of gun control laws is an extensive and objective review of research both supporting and denying the basic premises of gun control in preventing crime and accidents involving firearms. Kopel takes an even-handed approach that is greatly missing in most compilations on this subject. Kopel takes great care to examine the merits of the existing research, almost always providing extensive analysis and reference to each work. Just as in his previous award-winning book, "The Samurai, the Mountie, and the Cowboy", Kopel's analyses (in the chapters he writes) are complete, to the point, and well-written. Kopel's writing is clear and effective. The strongest and weakest chapters of the book, however, are contributed by other authors. The chapters on feminist theory (by Mary Zeiss Stange) and race control and guns ( by Robert Cottrol and Raymond Diamond) provide some good background on the subject but fail to deliver the knockout blow that they could. The chapter on doctors and guns, however, delivers not as much the knockout blow as takes a sledgehammer to the medical community, AMA, American Association of Pediatriacs, and Center for Disease Control. Don Kates, Henry Schaffer, John Lattimer, George Murray, and Edward Cassem expose the intellectual dishonesty and horrendous scholarship in the medical literature concering firearms, violence, and safety. All accustations are well-documented and examined. This chapter should be must reading for every single medical school student in the United States. It may make you fear your doctor.

This book should take its place among the other outstanding, intellectually honest works in the literature of the gun control efficacy genre, including Gary Kleck's "Point Blank". the previously mentioned Kopel work, and John R. Lott, Jr.'s "More Guns Less Crime".

An added feature of this book is not only the brilliant analyses and conclusions Kopel makes on the ineffectualness of gun control laws on preventing crime and accidents, but Kopel provides analyses on REAL causes of these social ills and suggests REAL solutions. You should buy four copies of this book: one for you, one for your doctor, and send the other three to your senators and congressman.
