I hope the authors know how many people they have helped with this book. Perhaps they can update it for the latest stresses that the accelerated information age and the post-September 11th world have brought.

As others have said, I wish I had read this book in my teenage years.

It's unusual for me to read chapters of a book out of order. Had I read this book from front to back, I would have angrily tossed it out when I hit chapters 3 and 4. The authors have not had the pleasure of grasping the virtue of selfishness. Instead, they occasionally apologize and appease. In these early chapters they recommend "unconditional positive regard" stating that it's "not selfish, nor egoistic" to have this attitude towards ourselves. This chapter is a philosophical junkyard. They ask why we admire a Mother Teresa and answer that it's because she sacrifices herself for others. They ask "Would you admire her if she sacrificed herself for something worthless?" and omit the possibility that she is not admirable because she lived a life of sacrifice by choice and encourages others to do likewise. The authors also invent the contradictory concept of the "unselfish I."
So heaven help me! Why would I recommend such a book? I recommend it because it is chock full of simple good tips - e.g., good study skills, identifying and pursuing healthy goals to bring you pleasure, keeping friendships fair - with a lovely undercurrent of egoism despite occasional nosedives. For example, "Cultural attitudes, including religious ones, seem to make rewarding oneself seem bad..." (Were it my book, I would omit the "seem to") - or "Do not make a virtue out of being a martyr." The mix of good and bad ideas in this book makes me wonder if one author was philosophically healthier than the other one. This book offers valuable thinking skills. I recommend skipping chapters 1-3. This is a good book to keep in your reference library. If you are having difficulty with a particular issue in your life, read the chapter on that. Some skills that are helpful include:
- "swat" the NATs (negative automatic thoughts)
- distant elephants (do not commit yourself to unimportant activities no matter how far ahead they are)
- focus on important but non-urgent activities, rather than urgent non-important activities
- avoid "pressurizing" words: "should, must, have to, ought" which drain motivation
- avoid avoidance - actively solve your problems rather than run from them
- reduce the "inside" load of stress by changing attitudes
- learn how to unpackage your fears
- motivate yourself by focusing on the personal benefits of your success

One particular chapter -- "The Product Conversion" -- does a brilliant job of demolishing the theory that homosexuality is a mental illness. It dissects every argument made to this effect, and shows that homosexuality is nothing more than a variant of human sexuality, in much the same way that being left-handed is nothing more than a variant of laterality. Szasz does a brilliant job of showing the hypocrisy of the medico-legal establishment in terms of that establishment (1) declaring that homosexuality is a mental illness (this is no longer the official position of the American Psychological or American Psychiatric Associations) while (2) declaring that homosexuality is a crime. It cannot be both, as Szasz points out in his analysis -- while criminals can be mentally ill, homosexual status as opposed to conduct cannot be both criminal **and** a mental illness. The book is worth purchasing for this chapter alone, and I recommend it to any person interested in beating back efforts to remedicalize and recrimenalize the status of gay people. This chapter also reveals the manner in which religious ideology masquerades as psychiatric doctrine, ruthlessly exposing the epistemological error made by those who cling to outdated and cruel theories in this regard.

a penetrating and enlightening analysis of things that make men crazy, namely power and control.

Thomas Szasz is a real hero of consciousness, freedom and intelligence who is never afraid to disclose the information that hurts the orthodoxy where it counts.

This work, like so many of his others, is a shining example of the great American libertarian vanguard.

Enjoy.

Mental Illness: A Study in Scapegoating.
Helpful Votes: 26 out of 29 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-19
_The Manufacture of Madness_ by right wing libertarian "anti-psychiatrist" Thomas Szasz is a comparative essay showing the similarity and growth of the "religion of mental illness" from the Inquisition, the persecution of heretics, and the days of witch hunting. Szasz contends that the idea of "mental illness" is in fact a category mistake involving a false notion of "illness". Much of this book is spent demonstrating how society in the form of the "mental health movement" seeks to root out dissenters and heretics in order to protect the reigning order (or to achieve a new scientistic based order controlled by doctor-bureaucrats - the modern day utopia of "the Brave New World"). Szasz finds notable similarity between the mental health movement and the Inquisition and persecution of witches (including the comparison made between the _DSM_ and the notorious witch hunter's manual _Malleus Maleficarum_). Szasz observes that society has always had certain individuals who defied convention and thus posed a threat to the reigning order. These individuals (mostly eccentrics, romantics, dreamers, dissidents, and heretics) were often rounded up by society's "protectors" and then identified as the "inner enemy" and thus conveniently "scapegoated". Tradition held that the scapegoat served as the embodiment for all of the sins within the given enclosed society. Thus, for Szasz, the so-called mentally ill individual is identified as an eccentric by the modern day "therapeutic state" and deemed to serve as the scapegoat for the sins of a given society through the process of forced confinement. Those who fall too far to the right or left of the bell curve are arbitrarily deemed "abnormal" after some cutoff point and therefore forcibly confined, their civil liberties denied to them. Often such an individual is a poor man or woman who is eccentric and lives alone. Such a person makes an easy target for the statist "thought police" of the world of 1984. Despite their denials of their illness, such individuals are arbitrarily declared ill and confined. Nearly all categories within the _DSM_ have clear reference to class, race, and sex biases. Nearly all categories can serve conveniently as a tool of the wealthy and dominant elite against the impoverished classes. While society may deny civil liberties to certain individuals, the real problem is that it has failed to provide a way to fully integrate such eccentric individuals into its dominant structures. Thus, Szasz seeks to re-politicize a process that is often entirely de-politicized and defined in terms of illness. The first half of this book offers a comparative survey of mental illness and the mental health movement and the persecution of witches and heretics. One may consult the works particularly of Norman Cohn, a historian who deals with the medieval period and some of the mass hysteria that existed at that time, for a detailed examination of this topic within Europe particularly. However, Szasz fails to mention that the notion of madness predates the medieval period going back as far as Biblical times and being discussed by such illustrious Greeks as Aristotle and Socrates in terms of ethics. The second half of the book deals with the manufacture of madness by what amounts to "mad doctors". Here, the great American doctor and an important framer of the Constitution, Benjamin Rush is discussed. Rush often viewed political conflicts in terms of illness, proving for Szasz that the notion of illness has been repeatedly abused so as to further a political agenda. Rush's advocation of "cures" for individuals deemed to be "mentally ill" often amount to barbarous cruelty. Psychiatry has a long, bloody, and inglorious history involving forced medication and confinement, as well as electroshock and insulin shock therapies, and "insane" psycho-surgeries, as well as a thousand other tortures. Szasz also discusses the notions of heresy, medical stigma and scapegoating, as well as two of the more notorious deviancies which psychiatry originally sought after: masturbation and homosexuality. The ridiculousness and obsession of psychiatry with these sorts of disorders which would otherwise be deemed as sinful, demonstrates the absurd lengths to which many doctors would go (supported by Freudian theory) to legitimize their practice. For example, consider this ironically crude remark made by German physician, Werner Villinger, in the 1920s, which speaks of masturbation as "a snake which has to be throttled". Such outbreaks of hysteria and "masturbatory insanity" were common during this era. Szasz would argue for example that the removal of both masturbation and homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses in the _DSM_ proves that these so called "illnesses" are nothing more than social constructs reflecting the dominant morality of the era. While I agree with Szasz on many points he makes here, I disagree with him to a certain extent. The fact is that certain individuals pose a threat to the dominant order, either as criminals or as causing a great deal of dissent. Also, unlike Szasz I believe that religion and the church serve a useful purpose in society and disagree violently with his secular humanistic stance and rejection of God. The question remains however who should the notion of "mental illness" serve principally. Should it serve the patient, should it serve the family, or should it serve society at large (which is increasingly coming to resemble a scientistic dystopia)? In a traditionalist based society, for example, the so called "mentally ill" would be regarded as seers, prophets, or magicians and treated with reverence. In today's world they are often treated maliciously. Mental illness often amounts to nothing more than what traditionally was known as eccentricity, magic, religious experience, mysticism, the experience of being truly "awake", and other unusual experiences. These experiences should not be declared abnormal or somehow outside the human condition by a scientistic and materialist based culture.

I first came across this book about 15 years ago while going through some stacks in the library of a community college in San Bruno CA. What stunned me at first was the equation of modern psychiatry being the child (i.e. direct decendant) of the Inquisition. I made a copy of the book but misplaced it. Even so, I thought about the little bit I read of it for years. It never left my mind.

Then the issue of manufacturing a person's madness came intimately into my life during the past two years or so. I found a used copy (maybe Amazon.com) and read it within the past three months. This book literally armed me with arguments that permitted me to persuade others--those holding the keys of bondage--that their system was flawed, and it resulted in the release of a person from incarceration in a mental institution. Since that time this person has been seen by a number of mental health professionals none of which attach a mental diagnosis to him.

I think the true value of this book to me is the psychoanalytic quality of the writing and its systematic approach. I would see it as being very hard to find Szasz's arguments as flawed, although I can see how some aspects of his thought maybe viewed as being exaggerated. Still, sometimes we all have to exaggerate a problem in order to expand it be able to sufficiently see what is actually going on. I think he does this eloquently and elegantly.

There were times when I was reading the book when I thought I might not get any more out of it, and I was tempted to set it aside, and I am so glad that I didn't. I feel now that this text was a very personal thing to him, and it comes out in the end, although it might not be completely evident.

I got a great deal out of reading this book. I would recommend it to anybody whose life has been affected by fear, doubt, superstition, dogmatic therapists, etc. Just knowing how the system is set up institutionally can assist one in making better choices and articulating your views, particularly when they are based on sensitive feelings.

Many mental health professionals like to come across at times as being god-like, but those who do come across this way are often insecure and exploit others to hide their own deficiencies. This book truly helps in being able to uncover that deception in a way that you can go nose to nose with the inquisitors of this generation who can be very dangerous and who can create a tremendous amount of damage.

It is scary, but it is far more scary without the knowledge Szasz has so generoously provided us, and which is made even more poignant given the persecutions he received from others within his own field.

It's difficult to market a service - you're marketing the invisible. It's even more difficult to find a services-specific book on marketing. Anthony Putman cuts right to the bone with his ideas, approach and presentation. This is the best marketing book I have ever read. And, I have bought dozens to give to my friends in the service industries.

Of all the books I've read on "Marketing Your Services" this has to be the best. The reason is that Putman gives the most comprehensive, in-depth and holistic view of marketing I've ever seen in print. He looks at marketing your services not as a chore you need to get through but as a fun and challenging activity to improve the success of your business. Everything is covered here, from finding your niche to taking care of clients. The style is fun and informal and includes many stories and real life examples. This is a "must have" book if you want to attract new clients.

I read lots of business start-up books since I help people start successful businesses for a living. Finding a book written by someone who has something new to say is rare. This is a book which is not just a recycle of someone else's work.

Most books are written for product-based businesses so the 4 p's of marketing are applicable, but service businesses are really different. You can't taste, touch, or otherwise inspect a service before you buy.

Putman's chapter on pricing justifies the price of this book by itself. The book is also helpful in dealing with price objections, a critical part of any business. While it's pricing component is not new, the method provides a great baseline for your business.

I particularly liked the method by which Putman helps entrepreneurs creates benefit statements. People don't buy based on a feature list.

The study guide is excellent. The text book has a huge amount of information, and trying to do all the reading for class is almost impossible. The study guide breaks it down into easy-to-follow segments that are short and have the most important information readily available. The study questions are great. It wasn't required to purchase for my class, but it was the best investment I've made for the course.

Although this book can seem a bit daunting at first (I mean, it's over 1600 pages!) it is a wonderful book to have. It was required for my first semester in nursing school and I found myself using it even then to write care plans and find rationales and now that I'm in the med-surg semester I use it even more to refer to pathophysiology of patients conditions, look for tips on what to watch for in every patient that could indicate possible complications, etc. It includes a brief overview of the anatomy & physiology of the following body system and also gives an detailed, indepth step-by-step "how to" for assessments of a patient, including abnormal findings. It's a great tool to have at your fingertips to make you more aware of what to look for in your patients.

I can't imagine a more helpful study guide. Full of NCLEX test questions, their answers, and an explanation of WHY it is the correct answer (in the back of the book) plus succinct yet complete outlines of the chapters and more; this is a book for students who want to learn the nursing material as quickly and as thoroughly as possible. Truly a gem of a book. Great for study/review the night before the test. I found this especially helpful with my study of Fluid, Electrolyte and Acid-Base Balance which is one of the more difficult concepts for me and many others to grasp. Use it along with the textbook, CD-ROM and companion websites for greater learning. Any time you spend in this book is time well-spent. A well-kept secret aid are the study guides to nursing textbooks which, at many schools, are "optional" to purchase, but trust me, they are mandatory for your learning! Good luck future nurses!

I had this book when I was younger- I'm 20 now. I was thinking about a story I read when I was younger about a couple who moved a mountian (or at least thought they did). I also remembered the Reading Rainbow rendition. I searched all over the Internet for the title because I no longer have it, or can't find it. Then I remembered it was a Scholastics! book. Here it is 10+ years later and I still want to read it.

Ming Lo and his wife love their home, but not that their house is at the bottom of a big mountain, which caused them nothing but unhappiness. Their roof always had holes from falling rock. It rained often under the mountain and with a roof full of holes it meant their rooms where damp and when the sun did shine it's warmth warmed the house and it was difficult to grow anything.

One day Ming Lo's wife told him he must move the mountain so that they may enjoy their house in peace. Ming lo replies that he's just man, how can he move a mountain? Ming Lo's wife knows of a wise man who lives in the village and tells him he should go and ask this wise man. And so Ming Lo does. Each time doing exactly as the wise man tells him and each time the mountain did not move. Finally the wise man told Ming that he must take his house apart stick by stick .They would carry these bundles in their arms and on their heads, and then face the mountain and close their eyes. Next the wise man said you must dance the dance of the moving mountain. You must do this for many hours and when you open your eyes you will see the mountain has moved. So Ming Lo and his wife did as they where told and when they opened their eyes... the mountain dance had worked and the mountain was now far away!

Arnold Lobel has a beautiful book with soft colored drawing! A great book to have as part of your childs' library.

Ming Lo and his wife live next to a mountain. The mountain constantly drops rocks on their house; clouds form at the peak and rain falls on their house (through the holes the rocks have already made) and it blocks the sun. Eventually, they have had enough!!

Ming Lo's wife sends him off to the village wise man that first tells them to run at the mountain with a large pole-this will knock the mountain far away. Of course, it doesn't work, so Ming Lo returns to the wise man many times to ask his advice. Each suggestion grows more and more silly until the last one that actually works!!

Mr. Label is most well known for his Frog and Toad books. The illustration style is similar with "Ming Lo", sharing similar muted colors but with softer outlines. The pictures highlight the foolishness of Ming Lo and his wife as they bang pots and pans at the mountain to scare it away or bring food to the summit to appease the mountain god. The wise man is an amusing character, sitting under a small pagoda in purple robes smoking a pipe (he produces more and more smoke each time that Ming Lo comes to ask him questions, to the point that he can barely be seen).

The story is easy to read and fun without being ridiculous. It's an excellent book for beginning readers and will keep children interested as they read on to find out what Ming Lo and his wife will be up to next! Highly recommended.

I purchased this book prior to converting my 2002 MCS to a showroom stock car.
My first step was to remove the supercharger.
If you have worked on your MCS, you know that the supercharger appears to be the 1 part the rest of the car was built around.

The details in the manual are very clear, and the steps are logical and they even include short cuts.

You also get the part numbers, wiring diagrams, and everything you need to really know the car and fix it yourself.

This is NOT a chilton/hayes Manual.
IT HAS DETAIL!!!!

From brake jobs, to engine removal, to speaker installs, this is the single best "mod" you can buy for your MCS.

The Three Investigators and Mystery of The Silver Spider is great. It has full of suspense and plot twists. It is my favorite Three Investigators book. The book is written by Robert Arthur, the origanal Three Investigators author. His three investigator books are better than the ones written by the later ones.

This was an excellent novel by Arthur and one of the best in the series. It details the exploits of the three sleuths as a chance encounter with royalty leads them to another nation where they become embroiled in an attempted governmental coup. Everything hinges on the Silver Spider--the key to the throne--and the suspense is immense when the only one who knows where it is can't remember! Mystery, suspense, and more action than in most of the books, The MYstery of the silver SPider takes you on a rollicking ride that culminates in an explosive climax. It will keep you glued to your seat and sweating with the characters!

Absolutely reccomended.

This book is the eighth in the Three Investigator series. "The Mystery of the Fiery Eye" precedes this book, and "The Mystery of the Screaming Clock" follows. As we learned in previous books, The Three Investigators are Jupiter Jones, Pete Crenshaw and Bob Andrews. Jupiter is the intelligent, sometimes inadvertently arrogant member of the group. Pete Crenshaw is typically the muscle of the group. Pete is usually quite fearless. Bob Andrews works at the library and handles records and research for the group. Bob began this series with a broken leg. His leg bothers him during one portion of this mystery.

The Three Investigator's Rolls Royce nearly collides with the car of Prince Djaro. The chance encounter soon throws the three boys into the midst of a plot to keep Prince Djaro from taking his thrown. To keep Varania, the home of Prince Djaro, on the side of the United States, the U.S. government enlists the aid of The Three Investigators as junior spies.

At the center of the mystery is an ornate silver spider that symbolizes Varania. The silver spider was stolen from a museum and then planted in the boys' belongings. The planted jewel was an excuse to arrest the boys and to discredit Prince Djaro, who has become the boys' friend. The boys quickly find themselves accused of plotting to take over Varania, and their friendship with Prince Djaro threatens the very takeover they were hoping to stop.

The Three Investigators are forced to take refuge in the sewers and catacombs beneath the capital city of Varania, hunted by the Regent of Varania. The boys must somehow explain to the citizens of Varania that Prince Djaro has the good of the country in mind, and the Regent of Varania is working for criminals. The boys must make this explanation while keeping from being arrested, deported, or worse! In addition to saving Varania, the boys must learn the location of the silver spider emblem that represents the Kingdom of Varania!

This mystery is yet another of the better books in this series. The basic assumption was a little thin, being that U.S. government would enlist the boys as spies, but after that assumption the story was interesting and exciting. As with the previous book, there are hints early in this story that permit an astute reader to solve portions of the mystery. I recommend a first-time reader begin the series with "The Secret of Terror Castle," the first book in this series, but this book was also interest most first-time readers of The Three Investigators.

Enjoy!

I know, I know: everyone immediately thinks "What about the Hardy Boys?!" Hardy, shmardy! I have read the Hardy Boys, and they just don't stand up like the Three Investigators series does. While several different authors wrote this series, there is a uniform excellence throughout the original 30 book run. After the 30th book, The Secret Of Shark Reef, Alfred Hitchcock died and was removed from the series, thereby ending an all-time classic series. While the series was continued for a short time without Hitchcock in the stories, it just wasn't the same.
The Mystery Of The Silver Spider was one of my favorite Three Investigator books. It is wonderfully written, with suspense, scares, and plenty of fun. Although all of the books were written in the late '60s and '70s, they are timeless stories, so don't be be put off by the age of the series (heck, the Hardy Boys are a lot older than that!).
For anyone not in the know, The Three Investigators are:

Jupiter Jones (1st Investigator): A stocky (fat) genius of a boy, he has an incredibly analytical mind. The Investigators make their headquarters in Jupiter's Uncle's junkyard (inside an old, hidden mobile home).
Pete Crenshaw (2nd Investigator): An athletic boy, Pete is the muscle of the Investigators. Nowhere near as bright as the other two, Pete still manages to make quality contributions toward solving cases. Pete is fiercely loyal to the Investigators.
Bob Andrews (Records & Research): Bob is the organizational genius in the group. While not possessing the deductive capabilities of Jupiter or the athleticism of Pete, Bob keeps all the records and does the extensive research that is often required to solve cases. He also wears a leg brace, which can be inconvenient when trying to run away from bad guys!
Sadly, these books have been re-edited to remove some non-PC elements from the stories (which is RIDICULOUS, because having an Arabic villian in one of the books, for example, is wrong HOW?? Changing him to a WHITE GUY makes it acceptable for today's audiences?!) I recommend seeking out the ORIGINAL versions published through the mid 1980s. They can be found on auctions sites and garage sales. An EXCELLENT read for young boys through their early teenage years.

The Quintessential Three Investigators Mystery

The Mystery of the Silver Spider is in many ways the quintessential Three Investigators book in my mind, mainly because this title stands out the most from my childhood memories. It really is a good, exciting story, full of political intrigue, international espionage, a dastardly conspiracy, very real danger, a mad flight to safety, and other thrills along the way. After a chance meeting with the young prince of Varania, the boys find themselves invited to the prince's coronation in his home country. They are ostensibly contracted by the U.S. government to serve as secret junior agents--while the feds know some type of trouble is brewing in the small yet important European nation, they have been unable to ferret out the information they need themselves and thus turn to our intrepid young heroes for help. Once in Varania, the prince confides in them the fact that the invaluable silver spider, the symbol of Prince Paul, the most important leader in their history, and the symbol of the very nation, has been stolen and replaced with a fake; without the true silver spider, the prince will be disgraced and his coronation will be postponed--perhaps permanently. Much to the boys' surprise, Bob finds the precious spider stashed among his handkerchiefs. Realizing that the evil plotters mean to blame them--the young prince's friends--for the theft, Jupe, Pete, and Bob are forced to make a run for safety; fortunately, they are aided by some Varanians loyal to the young prince. Poor Bob bangs his head during the escape and cannot remember where he stashed the real spider. As events build to a climax, the boys race to free themselves from capture and somehow alert the Varanian people to the prince's danger. With Bob still suffering partial amnesia, it is up to Jupiter to find the silver spider and thus save not only the prince but the entire nation of Varania.

This one is action-packed from front to back and may well be the best book in the series. If you have not yet been introduced to the Three Investigators and are wondering which book to try reading first, I would recommend this book. You might as well buy the other available titles, though, because you are surely going to want to keep reading these adventures. For the life of me, I can't figure out why there has never been a Three Investigators movie--this story in particular would be terrific on the big screen.

I like this text a lot. It has been useful for my neuroanatomy courses in chiropractic school. My background is chemical engineering - not biology - and this text is well written and makes a great companion for both neuro lecture and neuro lab.

The text of this book is quite easy to read, as medical textbooks go, and the figures in this book are excellent and easy to follow. A wonderful feature of this book is the double-page organization of the atlas portion showing brain sections. For each section, the left-hand page is an unmarked full-page photograph of the section, and the right-hand page is the same photograph with labels and borders drawn around the structures. This is much more helpful than the traditional approach that simply has a line pointing to a structure, for this approach shows the size, shape, and limits of the structure as well as its location. The unmarked photographs allow you to test yourself. I highly recommend this book for Neuroanatomy students.

The book New Prescription for Childhood Obesity by Dr. Billy Johnson was very informative. I was able to see the connection between what we eat and our health. It explains a lot about the health of our nation especially our children. I see so many overweight children and adults and that this epidemic makes me realize that we are slowly eating away our health.

This book gives clear and medically proven guidance for dealing with childhood obesity, but I believe that the information is also helpful for improving the health of children and adults of average weight and for adult weight management and health. It is well written, easy to follow, understand and implement. It is a practical guide to good health for children with many benefits for parents as well.

I can't agree with Dr. Johnson more than what the rest of the reviews have mentioned. The product he refers to (MonaVie) is a wonderful product for gaining a high amount of antioxindants and phytonutrients for adults and children. Not only is it good for children to curb obesity, it is also great for adults looking to get their proper daily nutrition. Taking 4 ounces daily is the equivalent to getting up to 13 servings of fruit a day. The USDA recommends getting 7-13 servings a day. Who has the time to eat that many fruits/veggies a day? Not me. It only takes 30 seconds to get your 4 ounces of MonaVie. I can't recommend it enough. For more info on MonaVie you can go to [...]/IFeelGreat.

Title: New Prescription for Childhood Obesity:
Fight Childhood Obesity with Antioxidants & Phytonutrients

Author: Billy C. Johnson M.D., Ph.D

Everyone that is aware of their surroundings must realize that childhood obesity has become an epidemic. However, few are as knowledgeable about the extremely sad, long term effects as this author, Billy C. Johnson M.D., Ph.D.
Written as a parenting guide for the 5-12 year old generation, the intention is teaching that eating less and exercising more does not work on a long term basis. Parents must teach their children the root of the problem so lifelong habits of healthy eating are established. By understanding this approach, the parents themselves adopt a healthier lifestyle, benefiting as well.
The root of the problem is the development of low-grade silent inflammation combined with decreased levels of antioxidants and phytonutrients. The result being chronic, degenerative diseases with Type 2 diabetes at the top of a growing list threatening quality of life. The multitude of traumatic diseases is not only diabetes but loss of energy and muscle, arterial plaque, poor concentration, heart disease and high blood pressure, just a few mentioned as a wake up call. Along with all of this, we are also faced with external sources such as pollution, inadequate sleep and ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
Chapter 1, is based on the philosophy that balanced nutrition can be tailored to the individual level of physical activity. Antioxidants are phytonutrients, which are chemical compounds found in non-starchy vegetables, fruits, beans and soy. They must be included in the diet for the body to be able to neutralize high levels of free radicals that cause oxidative stress, attack DNA and other healthy cells. The recommended daily serving of 7-9, falls very short in today's society. A new discovery to combat this deficiency is Mona Vie, which is a highly concentrated juice based from the Acai Berry.
This book has been meticulously written in 14 easy to understand chapters. The author, Billy C. Johnson M.D., Ph.D. leaves no stone unturned as he covers everything with clarity from food groups, to necessity of water and snacks. Planning is very important and he teaches us how to plan/shop, as well as providing a sample plan including many basic recipes.
He graduated from the University of Florida, did his residency in obstetrics and gynecology in Brooklyn and has also practiced in Virginia and Connecticut. After tragically losing his brother to heart attack secondary to diabetes he became interested in Health & Wellness. He is very active on the subject with public speaking, weekly radio program and on the Internet.
It has been an honor to learn from his book and I would highly recommend it.

Quoting from the back cover:

"About one in three American children is either overweight or obese. Childhood obesity is a crisis robbing youth of health and energy, and even causing children to die prematurely. Obesity among children, which is likely to carry over to adulthood, is also linked to a greater risk of high cholesterol, diabetes, early heart disease, and high blood pressure.

"New Prescription for Childhood Obesity provides an innovative approach to fighting childhood obesity. The traditional method for weight loss and fat reduction has been to eat less and exercise more, but this does not work over the long haul. To lose weight and keep it off requires addressing the root cause of the problem: insulin resistance and the low-grade silent inflammation that is triggered by many factors, including foods and environmental causes such as pesticides, industrial pollutants, and toxins.

"Now parents have an opportunity to change their child's eating and physical activity habits even before a weight problem develops. Complete with recipes to get you on the right track, this essential guide provides specific and simple strategies, techniques, and skills that will enable children to eat the right amount of food appropriate for their level of physical activity without dieting."

This is an excellent book, and we could all benefit, not just our children, from Dr. Johnson's theories, information and eating/exercise program. There certainly is a need in this country for information and guidance to help us fight our obesity issue. This is a well written, organized and edited book, and if your child has a weight problem, you might want to read and consider Dr. Johnson's program.

I read this book when it first came out many years a go. I have always loved reading books by Yorgason and noticed this book is a true story story about his family. I was touched by the love this family had for a sevely handicapped girl who wasn't even their's biologically. I was even more touch with the love Charity gave to those around her. I can't believe a child with out a brain could change so many lives!!!

I never imagined that my family would experience anything like the Yorgason's, but I was wrong. One year after reading "One Tattered Angel" for the first time, my cousin also had a daughter who was born without a brain. Her name is Amelia Grace. The past 10 years with Amelia has been difficult with many ups and downs but our family would never trade the great blessings Amelia brings into our lives. Reading the story of Charity brings peace, hope and love into our lives.

I first heard a part of this story from my Mother when I was young. I found it again later in life, read the whole story, and fell in love with Blaine's story all over again.

Miracles are all around us if we just open our eyes and SEE all that God has revealed to make man's life better!

One Tattered angel is a very great witness that miracles do happen and God is the God of all..... even the little ones.

i was on the island of st. martin recently, staying at a small hotel on the beach; to pass some time, i'd noticed they had "used" books on the shelf in the lobby to borrow and saw this little book called "one tattered angel". i started reading it and couldn't put it down. it affected the rest of my trip & my outlook on things, especially the power of prayer. i wanted to take the book with me - i was going to ask the hotel if i could buy it, just in case i couldn't find it anywhere. however, i noticed that it was signed by the author! i realized that the book needed to be left right there, so someone else could have the pleasure of reading it, like i did.
