Before I read Betrayal Trauma, I obsessed over the details of WHAT had been done to me, to protect myself from the deeper and more devastating knowledge that I was severely betrayed by people who were expected, by society, to protect and care about me. As I let go of my denial that their behaviors were the norm, and accepted that they had wilfully chosen to betray me, I felt and fully experienced the deep, foundational pain that I'd secretly feared might kill me. I was stunned to realize how their innumerable betrayals had kept me separated from the rest of society for DECADES. Armed with that knowledge, I was able to let go of my childishly unrealistic expectations, and emotionally disconnect from them. As I let go, I realized how lonely I was. Although I'd used my inner selves in the past decades for company, I now dared to reach out to external others. As I did - miracle of miracles - I began to fully integrate. (I've been tested recently, and no longer have DID, although I still struggle with PTSD from hell.) Some of the healthy people I've since chosen to trust, love, and bond with have become members of my new family of choice. I cannot, in words, sufficiently express the joy and happiness I now feel when I interact with them. I never would have experienced this marvelous part of ordinary life, had I not allowed Dr. Freyd's words to lead me through my foundational pain. By example, she blazed a brave path that I am fortunate to have found and followed.

I consider this book one of a small handful that really goes to the core of understanding trauma and its influence. Other such books include works by Alice Miller, Konrad Stettbacher, and Mortan Schatzman (Soul Murder; out of print; not the book by the same title by Leonard Schengold).

Because of her parents attacks on Dr. Freyd, I'd expected to find some of her justifible anger in the pages of this book. I did not. Dr. Freyd is logical, objective, and professional in her handling of this sensitive subject. She adds a somewhat new perspective to the old story of sexual abuse and betrayal. An excellent addition to any therapist's or survivor's library.

How could the huge betrayal of sexual abuse remain hidden in the back corners of my psyche for years and years? Can I really believe a memory that has been hidden so long?

Betrayal Trauma provides sensible, evidence-based answers to these questions. Freyd explains that forgetting is useful to the child because it enables her to remain in contact with the family that is essential for her survival. The closer the relationship with the abuser, the more important it is to forget the abuse in order to keep that relationship working, problematic though it is.

Freyd even found data showing that kids whose abuse was reported to authorities often "forgot" it for years, and the closer the relationship to the abuser (father vs. cousin, for example), the more likely the forgetting.

Isn't that stunning? Yet it makes total sense. I had to keep eating cornflakes every morning opposite my father and relying on him for food, learning, and yes, love. I could not allow myself to remember the abuse in the night.

I had anticipated that this book would be the same as all of the others that I have read in my quest to maintain my youthful look and feel, however I was absolutely shocked. Typically the books I have read have one or two chapters that contain content that I can relate too, considering people my age (35) generally do not think about the aging process yet. I sit at a desk, but do not want to look and feel like I do. This insightful and personal way that the auther addresses not only ideas that help me in the long run, but things I can do to change me here and now. I have every belief that if I try these techniques, I will remain Forever Young. A must read for anyone that wants to LIVE life at its best.

As a young woman, not born in the United States, I am constantly reading to improve my english and the understanding of the meaning of the words. I find out that reading a novel of a love story or mystery tale can be exciting and once in a while I get what people call a page turner. But never I read a book meant to inspire or teach me health or improvement of life to be easy to read, This book by Mr. Frank is book I could not put down. I read in two days and usually take me a week or more if I do finish a book, sometimes I get bored and put books down and never finish. I am reading this book for second time. It does not preach to me but teaches me.I like that it is good for women even though written by a man. He must know alot about women.I learn several things about my skin and how to keep my body clean inside that I have already started. If he is really as old as booksay then all men if they are smart and want to keep a good women should read this book and do what it says. Especially chapter ten, Keeping your sex life young. I hope he will write more books.I also think this book should be written in Spanish because my people do not have this kind of teacher available to them.It would be big seller in Latin countries. This book is Bible for the Body and people even younger than me should read this book to learn how to stay young. I am 30 years old and wish I had this book at 20 years old. Thank you Mr. Frank

I am in my thirties and I have always wondered why a book is either written specifically for men or for women. In reading Bill Frank's book, it is quite apparent that he practices what he preaches about relationships. As a married woman, I always believed that it would be easier to maintain my fitness level if I could do a program with my husband. Bill's book does exactly that. The information is not only extremely informative but is explained in such a way that we both can understand it and apply it to our own particular needs. It has even greatly improved our love life. We recommend this book to any couple who want to grow healthier, closer together and as Bill says, maximize their lives.

This book was given to me as a gift, and what a great gift it is! I didn't need convincing about the importance of keeping fit, building muscle, losing fat and other tips to keep you feeling and looking young, but found myself with renewed dedication after reading this book (and having my second child).

I found the chapters on diet and weight lifting particularly helpful. Bill Frank gives easy to follow advice on both and the book even has pictures to help the beginners in the gym. It was easy to make my own fitness and diet routine with Bill Frank's guidance.

This book is very easy to read and get through the first time--but I think you'll be going back over and over again to get great advice and knowledge about staying forever young. While you may not use every bit of information provided, I think just about everyone would find most of the book beneficial.

I would definitely recommed this book to anyone--no matter what your age.

This is an excellent manual in every respect. It is well written, with the owner-mechanic in mind, and the illustrations and diagrams are extremely clear and helpful. It provides detailed step by step instructions for testing components, which other manuals do not always give.

The only reason I do not give it 5 stars is that it only covers cars sold on the North American market. This means, for example, that it does not cover the L Jetronic fuel injection system fitted to many E28 BMWs sold in other markets (such as my own 1985 525i). For information on this system you will need to refer to either a specialist book on Bosch fuel injection systems, or the Haynes Manual covering all 3 & 5 series from 1983 to 1991 (Haynes manual 1948).

If you own any E28 and can only afford one manual, the Bentley publication is far and away the best available.

Insightful frameworks for an effective PSO

Review Date: 2007-05-27
This book is absolutely the best! It provides frameworks to structure and implement an effective professional services organization (PSO) for an IT product vendor. A product company PSO matures over time through various phases characterized by the types of services it offers. This book is full of practical yet winning strategies and tactics to maneuver the high risk waters of professional services. There are clear directions on how to manage key levers that increase profitability but it also sets realistic expectations. Although the book provides the `recipe' for a sample $100 million professional services organization, it lists all the necessary `ingredients' to cook up a PSO of any size.

I liked the fact that it is written in a style that is free of any jargon. Authors are professionals who clearly understand the industry from inside. My least favorite part are the diagrams and illustrations which are at best adequate but could be better. Highly recommend this book!

This is the absolutely best book devoted to building pro services organization in a product-based company. While there are a lot of sources on managing stand-alone pro services firm (i.e. accounting, law), this book addresses the common pitfalls in moving into services for product-oriented companies.

The book is easy to read, well organized, and packed with sound practical advice you can start applying right away, whether you're in delivery, sales, or marketing -- you'll be going back to it often.

This book absolutely is the best book I've ever ready regarding professional services. They describe a pragmatic approach from their experience at SGI services. This book will take you through planning an PS organization, development of various groups, reporting strucutures, templates for tools to help you.

It's focus in on a PS organization of a product company but you can take much away from this book if you are purely a services organization.

What I like the most is that it helps you do begin to address the various challenges where other books gloss over these topics and leave it to you.

The CareerXRoads series by Gerry Crispin and Mark Mehler should be a reference book that every recruiter buys. I am a recruiter with almost 22 years of experience and since 1998, I have purchased CareerXRoads. It is that good.

Candidates who want to use the Internet to find their next position will also find these books very helpful.

Gerry and Mark include informative articles for recruiters and job seekers alike at the beginning of the book.

Then they dive into the Internet and review websites that are job, resume, and career management sites. Their reviews are very helpful.

Recruiters, this book helps you determine where to spend your time and/or money to find niche sites to conduct searches. They also will suggest when a site may just be a waste of time.

Candidates, Gerry and Mark help you organize your job search. Their list of niche sites may help you zero in on companies who do what you want to do. Then, you may apply online or try to network your way into an interview.

Bottom line, if you are a recruiter or a candidate, purchase CareerXRoads.

Recruiters, job search sites, corporate career sites, HR testing online -- these are standard elements of the 21st century world of work.
If you are experienced at clicking in and out of employment-related sites, you will appreciate the very professional presentations of 500 sites the authors consider the best. There are also references to 2000 other sites.
If you're overwhelmed by the topic, or fear you'll never catch up, this volume is a place to begin. After perusing the book, you will know more about professional uses of the internet in the areas of job search and employee recruitment.

I have found that CareerXRoads is the bible for a good job search, using the internet; Obviously it is a great help in finding Internet sites where the right jobs are posted. But better than that, it tells you where to post your resume and how to post it, using the right format, key words, etc.

As a Career Coach, I recommend this book to all of my clients.
And, even more critical, as a Recruiter, this book is where I go to find the hard to find candidates.

CareerXRaods is both on my desk and another copy is in my attache.

I am even thinking of giving my kids each a copy on their birthdays.

Every job seeker and recruiter should own this book!
This book is a tremendous resource to a job seeker. It offers advice on everything from networking to resume development. On the recruiter side, it offers advice on how to maximize your recruiting efforts in a variety of ways. The index and rating of internet sites is an invaluable tool to both [I should know - I used this book during a recent job search and now use it on a regular basis as I have found a new position as a Partnership Recruitment Manager!]
I have met one of the authors [Mark Mehler], and he has a true committment to helping individuals and companies use the internet to its full potential in job and candidate searches.
I highly recommend this book!

I am a second year medical student preparing for the boards while taking my courses. I really like this book. It gives a case then after the case has a description of the answer, a detailed explanation of the case, diagnosis, treatment, definitions, etc. It finishes each section with a few multiple choice questions. The chapters are short enough to read one in your"spare time." I recommend this to any medical student that enjoys to read case studies as a complement to their textbook reading. :)

Review Date: 2006-01-28
Echoing the sentiments of previous reviewers, this book basically has 30-40% of the Ob/Gyn shelf within its pages. A lot of my friends read the book as well and were similarly amazed at its mimcry. Some of the questions seem to directly stem from the 60 cases in this text. You're hurting yourself by NOT reading this. It provides a good foundation for the major scenarios you might encounter in Ob/Gyn. It's particularly effective because the Ob/Gyn shelf is really specialized to the field and doesn't have too many general medicine questions like other clerkship tests.

That said, it should be noted this is not a textbook. You won't really get the ins and outs of fetal monitoring, birth, etc. This book is best utilized about a week from the exam or very early with the intent of RETAINING the specific scenarios. A good book to read to fully flesh out the subject would be Blueprints in Ob/Gyn.

A quick, effective read that's the easiest way to bettering your shelf score. If you enjoy your off time in med school, this is a great way to cram.

As a practicing clinician and college professor, I cannot overstate the importance of this book. As I read it, I realized that we all make quick and often inaccurate assumptions about one another, even when from the same culture. This book forces us to look at all of the ways in which we can oversimplify the behaviors or appearances of others and often jump to false and dangerous conclusions. It is certainly a book that anyone working with people from cultures other than their own (that means most of us)should read. it speaks both to the complexity and importance of the work and challenges us to look more carefully at what we do.

I have been a forensic interviewer at a Children's Advocacy Center for 9 years now. I train in the area of Forensic interviewing and specifically Diversity. I cannot say enough about the importance of Ms. Fonte's work here. From the perspective of a CAC Forensic Interviewer she is speaking directly to me and my needs in the field with this work.

CAC Executive Directors will find this book invaluable for the Standard Criteria regarding Agency Cultural Competancy. The Standard itself is addressed directly in one full chapter. If you have read this book when your review comes around and worked with it in relation to your Agency, in my humble opinon you will be on the cutting edge of the available thought and practice of Cultural Competancy at your Center. You will get it even if you can't implement it in your area just yet. This is your primer, and a MUST READ for Agency Cultural Competancy.

Ms. Fontes does talk specifically about Puerto Rican and Latino cultures in this volume more so than others, but do not discredit any part of the book for that. There are FAR reaching concepts and a paridigum shift talked about in the introduction by Jon Contes as going beyond Cultural sensitivity into more of an action and result based competency. And the book lives up to that at minimum as a GREAT PLACE TO START.

This book should become a Standard Classic in our field along side of others like Lamb and Poole's book on interviewing from the 90s, and Shame on us in the field if it does not. An interviewer dare not walk in to court anymore without have read and understood Lamb and Poole at least where if fits historically in forensic interviewing. One day this book will be of the same kind of importance.

BRAVO and Thank You To Lisa.

I work with a lot of abused children and their families who come from all over the world. I also work with children and families with other problems in a healthcare setting. This book is fabulous, and not just for issues of abuse.

Despite the heady topic, it's a good read. HIghly interesting and engaging. I especially liked the chapter on punishment, discipline, & abuse in different cultures. These are delicate and complex problems and Fontes does a good job explaining them with clarity and wisdom. I now understand why we have such difficulty tackling this issue at work, and I have ideas about how to handle it differently. This book is intelligent and practical at the same time.

Every chapter ends with some questions to "think about and discuss." At first I thought it might be a little corny--but I have brought this book to my workplace and we discussed several of the chapters and the questions. They provided an easy route to important conversations that we had never had before.

I'm going to use it in a social work class I'm teaching next semester! I think it works for beginning students and experienced pros--this is ENTIRELY NEW material and much needed. This author has done her homework!

Jagdish Sheth and Andrew Sobel convincingly retrace in Clients for Life the journey that professionals can make to become extraordinary advisers to some of their clients. Their findings are based not only on their personal experience, but perhaps more importantly, on in-depth interviews with leaders of major corporations who have gained significant experience in buying services and seeking advice from professionals.

Sheth and Sobel make a distinction among expert for hire, steady supplier, and extraordinary adviser on the professional services continuum. Some professionals are sought-after advisers instead of being just an expert for hire who offers his expertise on a transactional basis or a steady supplier who despite his repeated engagements has not been admitted to the inner circle of close advisers. Sheth and Sobel call this broad-based, abiding client relationship which generates collaboration and insight a breakthrough relationship.

Sheth and Sobel have isolated seven attributes that great professionals successfully develop and integrate into a powerful whole to come to a breakthrough relationship with a client. At the bottom of the pyramid, there are selfless independence (meeting clients' needs while preserving integrity) and empathy. Knowledge depth and breadth, synthesis, and judgment represent the thinking process that is expected from an extraordinary adviser. Finally, at the top of the pyramid, there are integrity and conviction that make up the character expected from such an extraordinary adviser. Sheth and Sobel illustrate each attribute with examples that help the practitioner put their recommendations into practice.

Great professionals have to infuse everything they do with a soul of abundance (doing the right thing regardless of monetary outcome), mission, and self-renewal. Sheth and Sobel conclude their examination of breakthrough relationships with the pitfalls and dilemmas in client relationships. Not all clients are open to this type of relationship.

Client Loyalty Doesn't Have to be an Oxymoron

Sheth and Sobel bring to life the concept of client relationships in a way that consultants, and other professioanl service providers, can use immediately. The value of this book is that it takes the client's point of view when discussing professional relationships, rather than focusing on how to sell services.

And, the book goes beyond theory to give the reader specific actions to guide their interactions with clients, and become true advisors to clients. The book stresses how to make the transition from a service provider to a client advisor.

The book also points out the land mines in client relationships, and how you can avoid them. An experienced consultant may find many of the concepts in this book familiar, but you may question how well you're following the authors' great advice. Those who are newer to the business will find a well-researched template for building a practice of clients for life.

As a consultant, this book helped me focus on behaviors aimed at building a long-term practice rather than simply going from success-to-success. I say this not to toot my own horn (yes, I've had failures too) but rather because most decent consultants actually do OK--clients are generally happy. We appear to succeed on a regular basis. The great consultants, however, are the ones who build vocal followings...and that's where the value of this work rests.

Edward Bear writes a compassionate and thought provoking tale of one man's journey as he accompanies others on their final journey. The characters are as varied as any group of people, but similiar in their need to make peace with this life before they move on to their next destination.

It is a story that resonates with remembrances of people who have passed and reminders of the power of kindness. It is a great read.

What a delight. I laughed, I cried and didn't want it to end. If you enjoyed "Tuesdays With Morrey", you'll love this too. A great read and would make a good gift, especially for those who take life to seriously.

You will love this book!

If you are going to die, or if you know someone who is going to die, this book is a must read. An angel helps a human messenger show the dying they can live, laugh and continue to learn, right up to their last breathe. The characters open to the messenger's compassion and gain the strength to forgive others, themselves and then let go to that greater awareness that comes when one releases from the physical body. The author blends the reality of death (the true non-discriminator) with the humor of life. While reading the book I laughed, I cried, I smiled and I thanked the universe for the gift of life.

A Psychologist Looks at Common Threads

As a psychologist, both in private practice and as a radio host, I work often in the field of grief counseling. Because of this, I am pleased to recommend Common Threads: Nine Widows' Journeys through Love, Loss and Healing as an important book on the subject. Told with remarkable honesty, the stories are close to the bone, portraying the shock of the spouse's death, the rocky journey with no roadmap, and the roller-coaster ride of the first few months and years. Each of the women, in her own way, faced the universal as well as the unique challenges of her new world. Each found her own path and pace to healing.

The book flows easily, is often lyrical, sometimes humorous --- a rare quality in a book on this topic. In its pages, mourners can learn ways to help them cope, and those who care for them can learn how best to respond to another's loss. The book gives help and hope to people moving through the most difficult of times. Like Tuesdays with Morrie, Common Threads is a book about living life to the fullest and about the victory of the human spirit.

The book tugged me in so many different directions, many of them precarious. However, the fundamental message of hope and futures that the author imparted made it an emotional journey worth hazarding. There is no faith without faith and life is, after all, worth a full-court press. Thank you for charting a path and marking it well, so the rest of us can follow. I was, and am, very moved by the expression of grief, faith and renewal.

Common Threads Met My Need Right Now...(a new widow)

The book "Common Threads" was very helpful to me. I am a Marriage Family Therapist (retired for a little more than 1 1/2 years). Of course I know all the psychological jargon and constructs of bereavement. I surely did not need to be educated on the subject at the time of my husband Bill's passing on January 4, 2002. My training only helped me from the standpoint of knowing the stages of grief, recognizing my depression and lack of acceptance of the sudden loss.

I used the book daily by reading segments or chapters, as the author relived and grieved about her experience and that of the other women. It was very therapeutic for me. Most of the time, I just cried, which was the very thing I knew/know needs to be done.

"Common Threads" met my need right where I was at the time, and for that I am grateful. I am recommending it to others who have lost their mates, and to other therapists who work with the survivors because I know it will be extremely helpful to these people.

Ms Kaimann is a wonderful writer, and her words were very cleansing for me.

It was when Diane Kaimann's husband died unexpectedly while scuba-diving in Hawaii that she was compelled to deal with the devastating condition of widowhood and began the sometimes painful, sometimes surprising, and ultimately rewarding process of reshaping her life. Common Threads: Nine Widows' Journeys Through Love, Loss, And Healing is a tremendously powerful book based upon her own experiences and those of eight other women having to adapt and overcome the grief and deal with the inevitable and sometimes traumatic life changes that come from losing a beloved spouse. Personal testimonies are the highlight of this profound, sincere, insightful, and ultimately inspiring book about sadness, and hope, and learning how to remember love. A treasure of emotional wisdom and insight, Common Threads is highly recommended, invaluable reading for anyone faced with the loss of a spouse and the necessity of working through their grief and reweaving the fabric of their life.

This is a fabulous book. The author has an easy style with a real story tellers ability.

The reader is drawn in and shares the author's pain of extraordinary loss. Yet one leaves the book feeling that the pain will pass and that there is still so much more of a joyful life ahead.
