Excellent for "whitebox" reuse
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-22
Before you purchase this book understand that the author's approach is "whitebox" reuse, wherein you have a repository of *baseline* components that are modified to suit development requirements. Contrast this with the "blackbox" approach wherein components are developed to have well-defined interfaces and internal logic and are not designed to be modified. Each approach has strengths and weaknesses, and each is suited for specific organizations based on business goals. Therefore, if you are a "blackbox" shop or are leaning in that direction this book is not going to meet your needs.

If you are seeking a book based on "whitebox" then this is an excellent introductory text for managers exploring the benefits of software reuse.

The first section, Fundamental Concepts, thoroughly covers the basics of reuse strategy and concepts and critical success factors.

Business case analysis is covered in the second section. The three chapters cover the basics and will provide you with solid information to support a business decision to go with reuse. Do not skip this section because while the whole intent of reuse is cost savings, the realities of implementing and managing reuse are that it requires a significant investment to get there.

The final section covers making the transition to reuse and ongoing management of reuse as an organizational policy and process.

A few final notes: (1) This is not a comprehensive "how-to" book - it is a management-level look at all issues and factors that need to be taken into account before deciding whether or not reuse is a good fit for your organization. (2) If you are exploring or seeking compliance with IEEE Standard 1517, Software Reuse Process, this book will provide you with the business case aspects, but is not necessarily consistent with the process as set forth in 1517.

If "whitebox" reuse is the direction you want to go, this book is an excellent introduction to reuse as a concept, and the associated business case issues and transition requirements.

fundamentals are sound and reflect the
extensive experience of the author.

What the market says about The Practice of Risk Management
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1998-06-11
"Have you ever wondered about how people work in risk management departments of leading banks? What is the tisk culture like? How does the risk management process work? What risk analyses and reports do they use? Go to the 1998 book, The Practice of Risk Management; you will find the answers to all those questions. A collective effort by a dedicated team from both Goldman Sachs and SBC Warburg Dillon Read, the 265-page book is the first treaty of its kind in describing the firmwide risk mangement landscape in these two leading financial institutions. With a delicate balance between conceptual discussion and practical examples, the book takes 4 sections and 20 chapters to cover the context of risk management, the toolkit for measuring market risk, risk management in the real world, and the changing world of risk management. Besides mainstream topics such as firmwide risk mangement framework, risk measurement, and regulatory issues, the book contains detailed presentation of risk reports, and in-depth discussion on risk capital management. For example, there are detailed examples of stress test reports, hot spots reports, best replicating portfolio reports, and implied view reports. These are tactical reports that explain a lot about the risk profile of portfolios in addition to VaR reports. The issue of capital allocation and capital investment have been examined carefully and a general framework of measuring risk adjusted performance (RAPM) is presented. The book finishes with a whole chapter on the future prospects of risk management 10 uears down the road using FutureCo as an illustrative example. Read it to see if you agree! As a guide for practitioners, The Practice of Risk Management is a unique contribution to the risk management community. I highly recommend it to all practitioners in risk mangagement

After training under Hau Lee at Stanford's Global Supply Chain Management forum, I picked up a copy of this book as further reading. This is an excellent compilation of papers written by a veritable "who's who" list of leading supply chain authors such as David Simch-Levi, Hau Lee, Warren Haussman and Seungjin Whang to name just a few.

The book takes you from core concepts and emerging practices through to the state-of-the-art in supply chain design and operation including e-commerce and web-enabled collaboration and reinforces the concepts presented with case studies and examples. Highly recommended to the strategist, manager and practitioner with an already strong background in the basics of supply chain operations.

After becoming acquainted with Mark Gorkin, "The Stress Doc" through his e-newsletter, I purchased "Practice Safe Stress" and it is wonderful. Mark's writing has amazing insight into the soul of anyone facing or recovering from stress related burnout.
His essays, poems, songs and anecdotes allow the reader to relate to his or her own struggle to find life's balance. Mark's book has helped me through a slow and somewhat painful process through grief to recovery and planning. This is a book that has earned its place in my permanent library,
Thank you Mark for your continued words of wisdom.
