Now in a substantially revised, updated and expanded third edition, Frederick Gilbert and Donald Dodds' The Philosophy And Practice Of Wildlife Management continues to be very highly recommended reading for students of wildlife management, wildlife preservationist and management professionals, as well as hunters, fishermen, and animal rights activists. American and Canadian systems and examples showcase diverse philosophies and practices of wildlife management on both public and private lands, in addition to chapters dealing specifically with Native American land claims and rights to wildlife resources, the effects of parasites and diseases on wildlife populations, endangered species, species management, environmental impact assessment, socioeconomic issues, management approaches, legislation, and jurisdiction. Of particularly interest is the discussion of wildlife problems associated with less developed countries and the introduction to international wildlife concerns. The Philosophy And Practice Of Wildlife Management is an essential, core title in any personal, academic, or professional wildlife management reference collection.

Learn from experienced DuPont practitioners.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-05-18
The NST/Engineers, Inc. reviewers recommend this book to responsible individuals in facilities that are relatively new to the practice of pollution prevention, and to those who believe their facility practices encompass every feasible approach to pollution prevention. Both camps can learn a great deal from these seasoned DuPont practitioners. You can get an extended appreciation of the kinds of topics the authors address and their approaches to solutions by reading two of their articles in the May 1999 issue of Chemical Engineering Progress.

The authors lead the reader, step-by-step, through the establishment of a pollution prevention management and operating structure for any facility, whether or not it is considered a "chemical facility". The only question is whether or not any potentially problem-causing gases, vapors, liquids, or solids are being disseminated beyond the fence-line. If there are any of the above flowing from your facility, read this book. You are bound to be helped by the practical information and case studies presented.

Our reviewers consider that the authors give enough of the tried and proven "methodology and practices", which, if instituted in a facility, will go a long way in helping establish ISO-14000 readiness. You will also be better prepared for Process Hazards Analysis and other components of Process Safety Management. On the other hand, if you are well along the road of PSM accomplishment, you will find the reading will make it easier to move into advanced pollution prevention practices.

There is quite a bit of detail on capital and operating costs for major pollution control technologies. Suggestions for achieving savings in a variety of operations are given. The authors stress the importance of considering changes in process technology and operating procedures. They give examples. They show how to prevent wastes from occurring in the first place; as opposed to being forced to spend a lot of effort in trying to prevent dissemination of the wastes in existing processes or procedures.

The Portable Ethicist is vital for anyone who counsels.
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.

The Portable Ethicist for Mental Health Professionals should be in every psychologist, counselor, and therapist's library. It's strengths are many but I particularly like it's Flash Points sections which offer a discussion point for helping understand when a person can be liable for certain actions. It then relates these to the Professional Code of Conduct for different disciplines. It's concrete and practical.

The book is easily readable, but well researched. Anyone who has heard either Bart Bernstein or Thomas Hartsell, Jr. Speak, knows these guys have "been there and know this stuff." It's one of my favorite books for anyone who counsels or helps others. If read and followed, it should keep us out of the courthouse and in the counseling field helping those in need. The Power of Leadership

Good insight into leadership
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-14
The Power of Leadership is one of my favorite quick reads (short book) with very useful quotes and stories from some of the world's greatest businessmen and politicians. The book has a quote and then a brief evaluation of what the quote is trying to convey to the reader. I believe Maxwell's interpretations are right on the money and a very refreshing way of looking at some of the best leadership quotes out there.
I should note that Maxwell quotes himself quite a few times (arrogance ? - you decide) but I would say this book is one of my favorites. If you are looking for a full-blown book try his book, 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader or 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. The Power of Attitude is another good short-book by Maxwell.
They key to getting any long-term value out of Maxwell's books is to highlight the quotes you love and integrate them into your daily life. Practice what you read essentially. Hope this helps everyone

Practical CM III: Best Configuration Management Practices for the 21st Century

PDM-centric approach
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-01
This is Lyon's third CM book and an extension of his Practical CM (ISBN 0966124820). The key differences between the two books is this one is more focused on engineering development and reflects more of the author's ideas. The first book was more influenced by MIL-STD-973 and the related EIA standard 649. This one does not conflict with those standards, but does take a more real world approach, with a distinct focus on product management. In fact, there is more similarity between this book and Lyon's "Transparent CM" (ISBN 0966124804), especially in the detailed documentation of best practices versus current industry practices, and the in-depth treatment given to each stage of CM.

It is in the detailed descriptions of the phases, and how they relate to product development, that makes this book an especially valuable resource to anyone working in the PDM/PLC environment. Each phase - identification, control, status accounting and auditing - are covered widely and deeply, with best practices associated with each clearly identified and explained. Different scenarios add depth to this aspect of the book.

Two areas covered, transition to production and support, are unique to most CM books that either gloss them over, or focus on, for example field changes and product configuration, but do not devote as much coverage to these areas as they merit in the real world. The coverage of software and firmware was a bit lite in my opinion, especially since most products have one or both as integral parts, but there are a wealth of other books that cover those topics. It is interesting to note that this book's processes do align to SEI's CMMI process areas for configuration management.

Some of this material is carried over from the other two books, and there is definite overlap between the Transparent CM coverage here and his book devoted to that subject. It does serve as a nice binding and segue between this book and the one on Transparent CM.

Like Lyon's other books, this one is a definitive text on CM and an important addition to the body of knowledge.
