This book addresses the contractural matters of the timber business very well. I was very interested in the tax and trust portions and was very pleased with the fairly recent subject matter. Real world information with guidance of what to avoid and how to enter into the timber markets.

Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-03
Edgar Ross' new book, Hot Topics in Pain Management, is a well-organized review of dozens of common and important pain syndromes. In addition to providing descriptions, epidemiological information and economic burden data, each chapter includes terrific treatment flow charts, all in a consistent format. The result: syndromes and treatments that are easy to understand. This book is a terrific choice for an internal medicine or family practice physician, or any provider who regularly sees headache, arthritis, angina and diabetic neuropathy patients. It will also be useful for the busy pain practitioner who's keen to update their references on pelvic pain, phantom pain and less common syndromes. Beyond the treatment information, Ross provides guidance about physical examination, along with examples of opioid contracts, and conversion tables. Final note: each chapter includes a thorough bibliography (a welcome surprise for such a small volume!), giving the reader a headstart on a deeper understanding of the research and outcomes for dozens of pain treatments.

Finding excellent sources of information on Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy can be difficult but this volume manages to combine almost all the information you need in a well-written and organized volume. Not only is there a concise review of RSD, but there are also detailed chapters covering treatments from blocks to medications and each chapter incorporates an extensive reference list. For non-medical people, such as those who have RSD, this volume is manageable with a good medical dictionary on hand

McCaffery has hit a home run with this manual for the relief of pain in all patients. It is methodical, concise and easy to read. There are numerous examples of documentation which can be used IMMEDIATELY in the clinical setting. The author has also provided strategies to assist in adopting these changes in home care, hospice, long term care, oncology, and acute care settings.

As a pain management consultant, this is the one book I consider MANDATORY for all health care providers.

A new palliative care reference for nurses & doctors
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-28
Palliative Care in the Home is a gem of a book, written by two noted palliative care specialists who were formerly general practitioners. First and foremost, Doyle and Jeffrey are concerned with quality of care. This reviewer believes their book will be of as much interest to nurses working in the home as to the physicians.

The book addresses special problems and challenges faced by both doctors and nurses in delivering palliative care within the home setting. There is special focus on home nursing issues. The authors maintain that good palliative care ought to begin in the home whether or not the patient is eventually admitted to hospital or special palliative care unit.

This small reference book is written in a straightforward style, and so is very readable and understandable, for the medical professional as well as the general reader with some knowledge and interest in the field of palliative care. The importance of the multi-disciplinary team is stressed throughout, along with the ethical need to respect patient autonomy and decision-making. Patients and families must be encouraged to express their feelings and views, and so take an active partnership role in providing care. Needs of the family carers and stresses on palliative care providers are among other issues developed.

The reader will find extensive, current material on symptom diagnosis, appropriate palliation and guidelines for medications to manage pain for a wide variety of diseases. Other chapters offer insights and guidelines to general practitioners who wish to use their counseling skills to offer bereavement counseling. There is an extensive bibliography of comprehensive reference books on palliative medicine and other specialized issues, as well as appendices listing useful drugs for the doctor's bag and setting up the syringe driver.

An excellent resource

I am a minister for a small church and I wanted to expand an outreach ministry to include Pastoral Counseling in my community. I purchased this text to cut down on the time I needed to spend to draft all of my forms from the ground up. This text not only provided the forms that I needed, but many others that I had not even considered. Not only that, the text explained the rational for needing the forms and how they can be used by various counselors.

I am proud to say that this purchase saved me an incredible amount of money in the end in both time saved and attorney's fees. My attorney was impressed with the documents that I had tailored to my business. I must say this has helped my business in many ways.

If you are a paralegal and want to convince your lawyer that you can help be a profit-maker for the firm, get this book. If you are a lawyer and want to know how to increase your firm's profits and use your support staff more efficiently and effectively, get this book. One of the things I like best are the formulas to show how delegating substantive legal work to qualified legal support staff is a win/win for the law firm and the client.
