Words cannot express the importance of this book to my practice. It has been an invaluable tool, and my reimbursements have never been quicker. It literally increased revenues so much in the first half of the year that the accountant questioned if the numbers were correct.

The real missing manual
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-12
Dr. Maheu and her co-authors have done an astounding job in putting together this reference/guide/manual to the application of electronic technology in mental health. I cannot think of any issue that is not addressed. Topics range from voice recognition software to electronic record keeping, email to video conferencing, web-based client education to online clinical practice. Two chapters offer an extensive discussion of ethics and legal issues with cautions as well as guidelines for professionals who would venture in this area of behavioral health. Three chapters are devoted to managing a clinical practice incorporating the new technologies. Real-life vignettes scattered throughout the book give us glimpses into what our colleagues are doing. We are even pointed toward a site where someone has set up a chat room where professionals curious about but weary of this medium can try it out. The authors' approach is balance in not just touting the benefits of these new technologies, but also pointing out risks, barriers and the need for research. If you have developed a professional website or thought about doing so, communicated with a client by email, or mused about monitoring client progress via a computer you need to add this book to your reference library.

Superb Guide to Mentoring Adults
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-21
Norman Cohen provides in Mentoring Adult Learners an excellent resource for mentors and coordinators of mentoring programs for adults. He organizes the book around six "behavioral functions" of mentoring -- a helpful focus in my view for those who would like to see their mentoring efforts have significant influence on those being mentored. Cohen effectively synthesizes the research on mentoring from the fields of education and business with awareness of adults as learners and principles of interpersonal communiction. Numerous examples and practical suggestions put flesh and blood on the solid research upon which the book rests. Cohen writes with a fluid, easy-to-understand style.

One-fourth of the book contains four appendices, two of which provide alternative forms of Cohen's Principles for Adult Mentoring Scale -- one for education and the other for business and government settings. The scale is for mentor self-assessment, and Cohen encourages use of the instrument for research on mentoring.

Other aids for the reader include a strong reference list and a helpful name and subject index. Discovery of several distracting (and at times misleading) editorial/typographical errors was disappointing, yet not enough to diminish my appreciation for this superb book.

I just finished reading this book. I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the information as well as the way in which the information was presented. Not only for IT people but for anyone who is involved in business strategy. Yes, my husband is one of the authors, which made me even more surprised that I could sit down and read the book as well as understand 80% of it.

Cecilia M. Mikalac, MD's Money And Outpatient Psychiatry: Practice Guidelines From Accounting To Ethics covers many issues not usually revealed in grad school, which all practitioners need to know. Billing, accounting and business management concerns are translated into money management basics for psychiatric practices of all types, from practicing psychologists to social workers and nurses, covering such important topics as how to assess an office or practice's financial foundations, plan for private practice's ups and downs, and handling legal and ethical challenges along the way. The second section covering insurance concerns, managed care, drug companies, kickbacks and more is where the meat of the book lies, really delving into the daily concerns a private practice an expect to encounter. MD's Money And Outpatient Psychiatry is a 'must' for any clinician or practice in psychiatry.

More Light, Less Heat helps Christians take a more objective view of their own beliefs and opinions and then offer the same grace-filled approach to others. The point is to gain a fuller perspective of what is behind the conflict beyond "who's right and who's wrong and who's to blame".
The goal is to find common ground, use manners in discussing issues and being deliberately careful to listen in order to better understand (not persuade.)

I found this book helpful and insightful.

Multimedia Legal Handbook

Review Date: 2004-07-15
Multimedia Legal Handbook is a complete summary of all the issues involved in developing, protecting, and distributing multimedia works. It addresses both the traditional legal issues that impact multimedia and the unique issues raised by the digital revolution.

The Handbook gives you a comprehensive review of the subject - from licensing of traditional content - to the problems posed by the scanning, sampling, and electronic communication of such content. Development, protection, and distribution of multimedia works are governed by several areas of the law including copyright, trade secret, patent, trademark, unfair competition, privacy and publicity rights, and defamation. The author covers these legal areas as they apply to digital multimedia works and to the individual components of the works, including characters, musical recordings, motion pictures, software, and more.

You'll find a thorough review of the traditional and digital legal issues raised, practical methods for protecting rights, and step-by-step guidance on licensing content from other industries.

The 2002 Multistate Guide to Benefits Law is an informative, well-written, and highly useful tool for human resources and legal professionals. As an attorney who works in the Human Resources field full-time, I appreciate the accuracy and timeliness of this and Mr. Buckley's other works. John Buckley actually has an entire library of publications relating to various aspects of employment law, many of which are designed to assist HR professionals, while others are created for attorneys practicing in specialized areas. Clearly, an enormous amount of expert research coupled with attention to detail have enabled the author to produce voluminous works of unparalleled accuracy. I give the Multistate Benefits Guide and all of John Buckley's publications my heartiest recommendation.

Comprehensive, modelling-based, rigorous

This is perhaps the only graduate textbook on Natural Monopoly Regulation available. Unfortunately, it's available only in libraries, as it went out of print soon after it was published. The company has no known plans of reprint, which is a real disaster for all graduate students of the field.

This textbook is comprehensive, modelling-based, rigorous, and yet maintains connection with the realities of the peculiar regulated markets in question. This implies that not only pure theoretical models are discussed and analyzed, but also the specific regulations are embedded into presentation.

Despite the fact that the book was written in late 80s, it still serves as an invaluable reference. I wish it were in print...
