The Lean Business Management System; Lean Accounting Principles & Practices Toolkit

This book is a very handy reference and "how to" book for everyone that is working with or towards a Lean Enterprise. Lots of pictures and examples combined with an excellent organization so that you can find exactly the material you are looking for very rapidly.

For the advanced practioner of Lean I recommend Maskell's and Baggely's ground-breaking text "Practical Lean Accounting" (the disk alone is worth the price)it is a scholarly read best suited for the Accounting professional and does not have as many pictures as this LBMS book has. "The Lean Business Management System" is a great next step after I capture someone's attention with "Life's Little Lean Accounting Book" to get them some practical examples and detailed answers.

I keep this book on top of my credenza for quick reference and recommend everyone in the Lean, Finance, and Accounting communities do also.

This is a remarkable textbook and a must-have for anyone desiring an initiation to the medical coding field. It has virtually all the features I would expect from a practice-oriented contemporary book: it is self-contained, well-organized and, in particular, completely up-to-date, and contains extensive references to real contexts and self-evaluation material. Despite the complexity of ICD-9-CM, authors managed to keep the text to a reasonable length and information density, and the progressive presentation of subjects makes the material relatively easy to digest. I most appreciated the balance of theoretical discourse, examples and diagrams, with "red flags" and "tips" to help novices perform as experienced professionals. In my opinion a copy of "Learning to Code with ICD-9-CM for Health Information Management and Health Services Administration" is an excellent career investment. I only wish there were an accompanying CD containing all the provided hyperlinks, a library of forms, practice quizzes, simulations, etc. I hope all this material will one day be posted on a supporting Website. Otherwise, the book is just great.

A very helpful reference for the private woodland owner

Thom McEvoy, associate professor and extension forester at theUniversity of Vermont has written a very helpful reference for theprivate woodland owner. It deals not only with legal issues but also covers taxes, estate planning, management, surveying, ethics and current perspectives on sustainable forestry. It gives enough background and detail to clarify confusing legal concepts but not so much as to burden the reader. Throughout it carries a wonderful point of view: it is often wiser and more productive to solve issues without the law than to get adversarial. As a bonus the book has some very useful appendices which include lists of extention forestry specialists, attorneys general, an extensive glossary and suggested readings.

It has changed the practice of this woodland owner. I have become serious about estate planning. I am less threatened because I understand it better. I was also motivated to contact my lawyer about what I had thought were minor legal items. They were not. Thanks Thom McEvoy.

The book will remain a primary reference. A comfort and guide the next time I have a timber sale, hire a forester, buy or sell land or discuss boundaries with my neighbors.

I am currently taking a Doctoral level course on the Legal Implications of Management. The textbook that is assigned for the course is very poor. This book is excellent. It explains many of the concepts that are mentioned in the course text but in a more clear understandable way. Well worth the price.

Legally Safe Mental Health Practice

Dr. Woody's book should be required reading for any mental health care provider - in any form of practice. He offers excellent advice on the spectrum of potential problem areas including, record-keeping, dual relationships, the standard of care, etc.

What makes his book unique amongst the many (relatively) in this field is his common sense approach and verbiage. The other books are either written by lawyers and sound like lawyers or writen by academic forensic mental health experts who write in a very academic fashion. Dr. Woody writes with the knowledge of a lawyer, but in an easily understood language and manner.

Also helpful are the many questions he poses in his text which add to the practical readability.

Great book!

Live life close to the earth
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-17
In a narrative rich with the essence of the Sacramento Valley, Thayer crafts a compelling argument for a life lived closer to the earth. He begins this evocative book--which is part memoir, part lifestyle manual--by describing his home of the last 30 years as "a mail-order spouse whom I would grow to appreciate, then love." Most readers will forgive his reluctant love affair, for Thayer moved to California's monotonous, agricultural valley from the rugged, mountainscape of Boulder, Colorado.

The author, a landscape architecture professor at the University of California, Davis, chronicles his growing connection with and attachment to a place some might find unlovable as an illustration of his point that every area possesses both unique potentials and limitations. He advocates for communities built upon new urbanist principles, art that is framed by region and education that is reflective of place. Drawing from personal experience, he offers a multitude of suggestions on how to reconnect with our immediate surroundings.

He cautions against allowing our local communities to be supplanted by the hegemony of the global economy and champions relocalized trade. He takes exception to large, top-down organizations. "The truth," he writes, "which neither the traditional right nor left wishes to admit, is that broadly enfranchised, local grassroots efforts to identify with and care for natural regions are so powerful, so ultimately democratic, and so basically popular with the American people that they threaten the huge, entrenched political organizations on both sides."

At its core, the book holds that a bioregional orientation is the only way to create true sustainability. Building upon the themes of other authors, such as Paul Hawken, Jane Jacobs and David Orr, Thayer shows readers how a deepened connection to the surrounding natural region can add meaning and texture to our often disconnected, modern lives.

Must read for bankers and non-bankers alike
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-09
Mr. Matz and Mr. Neu provide insights into liquidity planning and management that are of value to bankers and non-bankers alike. While there is sufficient theory to intrigue the conceptual crowd, the book excels at providing "real world" examples and solutions. Non-bankers should strongly consider this book as well:
* bank "best practices" can be adapted and/or adopted for other financial institutions, as well as general corporates
* bank liquidity and illiquidity influences the broader economy.

If you only read one liquidity book in the marketplace, this is the one.
