Sub-Title: Research and Best Practices (J-B SIOP Professional Practice Series)
Customer service is the last opportunity that a business has to convert a buyer into a repeat customer, the most valuable asset a company can have. The accounting statement entry 'Goodwill' really means the ability to sell more products to an existing customer base. Even when other aspects of the sale go bad, good customer service may be able to save the day, may be able to keep a customer that would otherwise be lost.
This book is perhaps the most complete analysis/description of the overall aspects of customer service available. It is a combination of research, of experience, of analysis, of theory, of practice. Each chapter is written by an expert in the particular specialty being described. It is part of the professional practice series for scientists, practitioners, managers, executives and academics interested in organizational behavior and performance.

The computer can improve and simplify medical care

The 2001 version of Slack's Cybermedicine, although having the same title as the 1997 volume, is much more than simply a paperback
edition. Cybermedicine is using the computer as a tool for medical care rather than an adjunct to administration. Slack
has kept abreast of the fast-changing computer world and has added a good deal of new material. The book is eminently readable,
with both content and language understandable by lay people as well as physicians and computer experts. He demonstrates compellingly
that the computer can be "friendly"and can simplify life for both physician and patient, can improve dramatically the quality
of patient care, and can help to control its cost.

Louis Pol and Rick Thomas have rendered a valuable service with this book. For demographers it demonstrates how their methods,
concepts and data can be applied to important health and health care issues; for health care professionals, it shows that
the "demographic perspective" yields valuable insights into a wide range of health and health care issues. The book is clearly
written, well-organized, and has a very useful set of references. The book can serve both as a reference tool for practicing
professionals and as a textbook for upper-division and graduate courses dealing with health and population.

Recognizing that architects and designers tend to be flow thinkers -- persons fully emersed in the specific challenge they
are facing but somewhat cavalier about details that don't directly relate to solving the challenge at hand -- Fred Stitt set
out to research and document a systematic way to approach the general details and day-to-day issues design offices face.
His work on systems drafting was groundbreaking back in the 1980s, and more recently Stitt has turned his attention to ecological
design.
Here, Stitt provides a wonderful source of information and advice on how to approach the many issues that the owner/director/manager of a design office faces day to day. None of this stuff is taught in any architecture program I know of. In fact, most architects and design professionals have never taken a business course. Stitt provides thoughtful analysis of the particular problems design-minded folk face in running an office and managing clients, and provides a systematic way to approach those problems. An excellent resource!

Just About All There Is To Know About Design-Build
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-06
Review Date: 2006-06-06
The traditional method of building a building was to have the owner contract with a designer, and subsequently to contract
with a builder to do the actual construction. The problem comes from the fact that there was often confusted communications
between the designer and the builder. Of course the designer and the builder had differing agendas, they each had different
capabilities, different jobs. The result was unhappiness, if not law suits.
One answer to this conflict was the concept of using one contractor to both design and build the building. The result has been a 6% lower cost, and 12% faster (33% faster if design time is included) than design-bid-build projects.
This book is a survey of design-build from his history, a description of how it works, a report on numerous projects from the real world, legal/insurance/contract information, off shore design, new advances in technology such as RFID and GPS.
In short this is a book to take the owner/designer/contractor to a level of understanding where he can work in a design/build environment.

King is recognized as a leader in the field of federal cultural resource management and has written a comprehensive, digestible overview of the history of the subject and the laws that govern archaeology on federally-funded projects. The chapters are informative, yet to the point, opinionated, and, dare I say, actually funny! King gives bibliographic references to most case studies, in case you'd like to chase down the details behind a certain cultural resource management decision, but it is also the perfect, readable beginner's guide to the history and development of CRM law.
The one critique I have is that it may be time to do an update of the book to reflect the ways that CRM law has changed since 1998. However, the fundamental concepts and laws are still the same, and the book remains the best on the subject. Today, I'm buying his newest book "Thinking About Cultural Resource Management: Essays from the Edge" (2002) to see what else King has to say. I will definitely seek out other books by the author.
