The best comprehensive treatment of HIV/AIDS

Tony Barnett and Alan Whieside have done a fantastic job of placing the issue of HIV/AIDS within a comprehensive context. It is easy to read, well researched, thoughtful in it's analysis, and comprehensive - that is, it places the pandemic amidst the global forces that are affecting it and which must be understood if we're to successfully turn the tide. I am recommending it to many of my colleagues! It is the best book I have read to-date on the most challenging crisis facing the human family.

A rare focus on the social and economic context

This is the only book-length exploration of the social and economic context of the the HIV/AIDS epidemics. What comes through is that the authors are not journalists who dashed off a book on AIDS, but longtime researchers, with world-ranging experience.

WHile well documented, it is readable. The next college level course I teach on contemporary issues will surely include this as required reading. My students will thank me for it.

The organization, indexing, and color-coding of the AMA books are FAR MORE USER-FRIENDLY than those from other publishers. This book offers increased indentation for subterms within the Index of Diseases, Index of Procedures, and Index of External Causes, directing you to the right code the first time more often!

The SPRIALBOUND binding adds true ease-of-use and is a MUST-HAVE FEATURE! Don't settle for the regular-bound paperback.

I used this during my CPC exam and passed with flying colors! This book would also be great for use during the CCS exam, CCS-P exam, CCS-H exam, and RHIA exam!

Americans and their Forests: A Historical Geography (Studies in Environment and History)

A landmark text

Review Date: 2008-02-12
This is one of the classics of American environmental history, sitting on the high shelf with Stilgoe's "Common Landscapes of America", Pyne's "Fire in America", Cronon's "Changes in the Land" and "Nature's Metropolis", and Reisner's "Cadillac Desert".

Williams does a masterful job of pulling together social and economic sources (including much primary material) to present a wholly original view of American history. For thousands of years people have shaped the forests of North America, and in subtle ways the forests have shaped us. However, forest history has long been hidden behind the curtain of political events that constitute the official record of "history", aided by the amazing shortness of human memory. Williams brings forest history (and environmental history in general) back into the light with a lucid account of forest history at the scale of the whole nation.

He dusts off long-forgotten sets of nineteenth and twentieth century statistics, and summarizes them in easily comprehended graphs and maps to make the point that the forest resource played an important role in population expansion across North America, in the evolution of our governmental structure, and in development of modern technologies. To the forest ecologist, he says 'Much of the forest you are looking at today is simply an artifact of human intervention in the past'.

Like all works which attempt to convey a long view of history, A&TF becomes a bit vague as it approaches modern day. The owls vs. jobs controversy of the Pacific Northwest is not mentioned, nor are the regrowth of eastern forests and exurban sprawl given the space they deserve. Nevertheless, the accounts of events in the 17th - mid-20th century are excellent, and highly relevant considering we are still dealing with their aftermath.

Possibly the definitive text at present, for although it is American (the UK is a slightly different place!) it is still very easy to read, very thought provoking, infomative and extremely useful for practitioners in the medical and educational worlds. I expect many parents would find this book useful and informative too.

Lessons For Any Workplace That Mixes Genders
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-23
Many books have captured that fascinating differences between genders, but Carol Becker goes further and deeper. She explores the dynamics of mixed-gender teams, a little understood but frequently practiced work configuration in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors. Becker's sensitivity to the many subtleties of inter-gender communication and her insightful understanding of the barriers to leadership for women are invaluable learnings to organizations in both sectors. The book was stocked with living examples and helpful suggestions, elements that heightened its relevancy and readabililty. I appreciated her primary target, that being nonprofit, mission-driven organizations; however, readers will quickly sense the transferability of her findings and recommendations to corporate America.

Women and men creating a better model of working together

Review Date: 2000-05-17
The book is good! Readable. But, better than that, it gives hope to women and men who work together and want to work together better.

Becker interviewed numerous 'mixed-gender' teams in ministry and then juxtaposed their stories against 'Nine Criteria'. The 'Criteria' may seem common sense but they are not. The case studies, observations and text are informative, provocative and instructional to women and men in ministry but hopefully also to the world at large.

Becker's Criteria gave me a quick snapshot of what mutual ministry can approach but also its hazards and challenges. I highly recommend this book.

An International Manager's MUST READ
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-21
A must read for anyone contemplating an overseas assignment or for anyone in a position to send key people abroad. Unlike many management how-to's this one is written from first hand experience, from both sides of the desk-sender and sendee. The light though pithy writing style carries the reader easily along, is engaging and clearly informative. The case studies Lomax uses are to the point and vividly descriptive; the lessons flow in a most logical and easy to follow sequence. Many illustrations, artfuly executed, mirror the writers easy style, add a measure of amusement and dramatize the subject matter. It's a shame that a high quality, clearly presented text on this subject has not been available in the past. The angst of so many returning "expats" might have been avoided. A real classic- destined to the difinitive work of its genre.
