Philippines has been known for its great tropical underwater lifeforms. Living here is a great opportunity to discover and adapt on its enviromental impacts. Yet, Filipinos scarcely understand and less dessiminated regarding protection on its coastal resources. Until now and still is one habit of Filipinos by doing an illegal way of fishing which we called it Dynamite fishing and/ cyanide fishing. As a citizen, i am very much concerned and depressed which is why i am working with a government agency specialized in managing coastal resources to uplift fisherfolks spirit of conserving our marine life as a source of its living by not over exploiting it. Coastal Resource Management leads fisherfolks to its legal way of fishing as well as giving them information on alternative livehood. Coastal Resource Management is one way of saving our mother earth, abolished poverty and respect God's creation.

A Must-Read for the China Trader

Review Date: 2003-06-19
In his book "Investing in China", William Gamble has provided a thorough, thought-provoking and highly readable study of the subtle and not-so-subtle nuances of the Chinese legal and financial infrastructure and apparatus. This is a "how the Chinese system really works" (or doesn't work) guidebook that should be read by anyone contemplating an investment or business dealings in China. Gamble covers the spectrum of contracts, bankruptcy, real estate, securities, judges and lawyers in a work that is full of informative, interesting and intriguing information and anecdotes. Even if I wasn't interested in China trade, I would have enjoyed this book.

A Valuable Resource and Down-to-Earth Guide

Review Date: 2003-11-05
I first became aware of China specialist William Gamble when I saw his comments earlier this fall in USA Today (of all places). Funny and frank, he's the rare investing expert who's made me laugh. So I picked up his highly readable book which also pulls no punches in precisely outlining and analyzing Chinese legal and economic structures. In explaining the Chinese market's myriad weak links, Gamble is direct, down-to-earth, systematic, involving, understandable, and persuasive. In this valuable, actionable text he effectively makes his case that these legal risks are real and relevant to international investors. When the egg breaks it will be messy. Having enjoyed and learned from it, I recommend this book without reservations.

I really enjoyed this book!

I wouldn't call it an "Investment" book in the usual sense, however it gave me new and valuable insights into the legal aspects of doing business, or investing in Mainland China.

There is much talk these days, about the coming China boom, but until now, no one seems to be discussing the additional risks of doing business in a region where contracts are often declared void on a politician's whim.

My own international dealings have been mostly in Western Europe, where the legal systems function in a way similiar to our own in the US. Mr Gamble makes clear that things work very differently in China, and that you ignore these differences at your peril.

I should add that "Investing in China" is an excellent refresher course on business law, and it's importance to the international investor. His writing is clear, and to the point, without being patronizing.

Not a heavy tome written for the legal professional, but rather a good read, written by a legal professional, for the rest of us.
Highly reccomended! Well worth your time.

A thoughtfully written and extensively researched account

The collaborative effort of Mary Minow (President of the California Association of Library Trustees and Commissioners) and Tomas A. Lipinski (Assistant Professor and Co-Director of the Center for Information Policy Research, University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee's School of Information Studies), The Library's Legal Answer Book is a thoughtful and authoritative survey and analysis of the intersection of legal matters and library business. Ranging from adapting digital library resources to serve patients with disabilities, to issues of privacy and library records, to issues pertaining to library employment, The Library's Legal Answer Book is a thoughtfully written and extensively researched account, expertly created to give the reader a good grounding in background information about libraries and the law. No private, corporate, academic, or community library system should be without recourse to a copy of The Library's Legal Answer Book.

Clear, concise, essential

Minow and Lipinski have crafted a guide for librarians who need guidance in what might seem to be a hopeless quagmire of potential legal entangelements. Its organization is clear, and an excellent index provides good access to its contents. Most important, perhaps, is the clear and unintimidating style of the writing.
Some sections transcend the "library" in the title, and would be useful for anyone a) designing a website; b) working to provide access to resources for people with disabilities; or c) employing staff. Journalists covering library issues will find it to be a useful reference as well.

All you ever wanted to know...

Ms. Minow and Mr. Lipinski have written a very thorough, extremely readable volume on a tough topic--libraries and the law. In these times, both patrons and those active in the library world need to know the information in this book.
Written in an engaging question and answer format, the book is like reading newspaper questions to the editor with responses!
All of us fit in the patron and/or library world categories (right?) and, therefore, I highly recommend this book to everyone. As a person who falls into both categories, I learned a lot--and, with no pain! Five stars.

"Life Lessons for Busy Moms," is divided into 7 chapters. Each chapter is filled with wisdom, humor, advice, quotes, tips and stories.

"Make Time To Nurture Yourself."
The emphasis of this chapter is taking care of you, creating boundaries, cultivating your relationship with your husband and creating balance in your life. As a mother you wear many hats and you need to recognize how important your roles are.

"Take Charge of Your Parenting Style/Philosophy."
"Implement Creative Solutions (with an Organized Approach)"
"Feed Your Soul."
As a mother what do you need? What are your goals? What do you see as your future?

"Keep an Organized Home."
This is my favorite chapter. Organization! Our lives are less stressful is we have detailed schedules, systems and a good calendar.

"Solicit Help."
We all need assistance at sometime or other but many of us refuse to ask for it. No matter how hard you try you can't be Supermom!

"Make Time to Slow Down"
When we slow down we come to appreciate "the small things in life" those little moments that later we wish we hadn't rushed through. We come to cherish what's happening right now instead of worrying about what might happen, "the what if's."

I wish I'd had this book years ago when my three children were little. Looking back on those precious years I wish I'd been more organized, more stress free. I wish I'd taken more time to enjoy those special moments as they happened rather than stressing out over unimportant things.

This is a delightful book with sound, sensible advice and suggestions written in a humorous style. The stories are sure to bring a smile to the faces of mothers and grandmothers. This book would make a fantastic gift for a new or expectant mother. I highly recommend "Life Lessons for Busy Moms" to all mothers and grandmothers. My daughter and daughters-in-law will each be receiving a copy.

Dr. Robbins has once again written technical medical information in language the ordinary layman can understand and put to practical use. As a headache suffer myself, information contained in this book has helped me cope with the day to day trials of headache life. This info, coupled with what I learned in Dr. Robbins previous books, has opened my eyes and helped me understand some of the "whys" and "why nots" of certain mediations and even the medical profession itself. I recommend this book as "must reading" for the headache communuity.

The 2nd edition of this book is now available. This book had previously been reviewed as the best headache book on the market for physicians. It describes in detail all the different types of headache and dicusses all treatment and medications available. It is particularly good for what to do when nothing works. Although initially intended for physicians, this book is very understandable and readable for the patient as well. This is a "must have" for anyone suffering from headache.

Buddhist ideas in a business application
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-28
This is terrific introduction to Tibetan Buddhist ideas that are easier to understand because they are expressed in the anecdotal situations of running a printing business in the 90's. The author is candid and unpretentious, speaking clearly about the ups and downs of applying some ancient wisdom to his work, ideas that have come from a genuine buddhist master, but still had to be applied by someone who, despite considerable experience in business, was still a student of applied Buddhism. I like the genuineness of the author, and the feeling of the relationship with the teacher...this book is fun for those of us convinced there is something in Buddhism of great value, but not sure how to bring that something directly into our daily lives.

New ideas on mastering time

Review Date: 2000-03-18
This is a great book because of how it brings together ideas that are usually kept in separate compartments. The author is the student of a Tibetan Buddhist teacher, and about ten or twelve years ago he and some other students started a printing business. The idea was to use Buddhist teachings in the business, especially some principles that they call "skillful means," and to see if they could make the business more successful.

It seems like it worked. The business did really well, even though they started with a few strikes against them, and they had a good time too (not fun exactly, but a sense that their work had real value and was part of their spiritual path.)

All that makes for interesting reading. But the real point of the book is to share some of the lessons they learned. That's the part that seemed really rewarding. Skillful Means involves a whole approach to time and to taking responsibility for your life and for getting the results you want, in your work or anywhere else. I'm already experimenting with some of the ideas, and they make good sense, and have an immediate impact.

I don't know if all this will translate well into everyone's job, but I can see the benefit, and I feel like I've just scratched the surface. The author is really excited about the ideas in this book, and I am too.
