This book has many aspects of copyright and the impact on schools covered. Simpson provides some clear guidelines and realistic scenarios for the impact of copyright. She covers the development of copyright from the English to fairly present day issues even getting into some of the latest laws such as DMCA. I found the book to be very helpful in explaining the use of video in schools and have seen educators face such challenges.

Copyright and fair use can be very confusing issues, particularly in education. Many educators over-estimate their protections and privileges under fair use. This book is an ideal resource to help educators determine how copyright and fair use impact them. It clearly describes, with specific examples, what educators can and can not do with copyrighted materials. We purchased copies of the book for all of our academic buildings on campus so that all students and faculty could have access to this valuable resource.

What an amazing book! Easy to use and indispensable if you are a school library media specialist. Hard to believe a book like this could be EXCITING, but it's always nice to know when you are right and others are not so well informed. Use this book for all the black, white and gray areas of copyright issues. Should you make a "back up" copy of an audio tape? Is it okay to use photos off the web on a personal web page? This book will help you be a legal eagle with copyright issues in your school. Do you really know what "Fair Use" means? What about the legality with video tapes and multiple copies of other resources in the library collection. This highly informative and easy to comprehend book is invaluable as you try to wrap your brain around the complicated and complex copyright issues with print, media and the web. If you are a Library Media Specialist, add it to your personal or professional library.

IF YOU BEEN USED AND ABUSED, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!

This book hits the nail on the head on corporate abuse. I displays the greediness and quest for a good "bottom line" instead of treating employees with the respect they've earned.

A must-read for anyone in the corporate world - abused or no

Review Date: 2000-01-12
I read this book when I was working at a very abusive organization. It brought clarity to my confusion, removed the personal burden I had been carrying and alleviated a great deal of stress from my life. We stress when we don't understand. This book will bring you understanding. If this was all "Corporate Abuse" did it would be more than worth the price. However, the clarity of the author's ideas combined with the personal anecdotes made otherwise esoteric and ivory tower theories shockingly real and applicable to daily life. This is not a 'whoa-is-me', 'corporate = bad, employee = good' diatribe. It offers incredible insight into how corporations work and why these situations are inevitable when certain foundations have been laid. It is just as valuable to the corporate mind as it is to the employee. In addition, the authors offer guidelines for both parties to either improve the situation or avoid it all together. That's why it gets a fifth star!

A must-read for those dealing with abusive workplaces.

Review Date: 1998-11-27
Perhaps the greatest benefit of this book for those who find themselves in abusive work situations is coming to the realization that there really is a problem and that they are not to blame for it. Abusers are well-skilled at making those they abuse shoulder the blame for the abuse. Wright and Smye make it clear that the abusive work situation is both dysfunctional and wrong. The sub-title "How Lean and Mean Robs People and Profits" makes it clear that no one wins. The writers identify three patterns of workplace abuse (there are likely others). These patterns of abuse are systemic rather than situational. To that end they identify them as cultures. The first pattern is the "culture of sacrifice." The essence of this culture is its insatiable demands on the employee. The employee can never give enough to satisfy the demand and personal boundaries are treated as non-existant. The second pattern which they identify is the "win-lose culture". The essence of this pattern is healthy competition turned demonic. Co-workers are pitted against one another in a Darwinian expectation that the strongest will prevail, thus making the corporation stronger. The third abusive pattern is the "culture of blame." In this pattern someone is always to blame for any problem. Problems are never the result of processes or systems and the culprit, once identified, is destroyed. This book is not about some soft-hearted sentimentality that cannot deal with competition, hard work and difficult decisions. It is about recognizing and understanding what it means to be human and treat others in the workplace with respect. It is about building a culture with an eye to the long term in which both the bottom line and the potential of the worker are maximized. The book is an easy read and provides a good balance of analysis and examples of dysfunctional workplaces. If you've ever found yourself in an abusive workplace (or if you are currently in such a place) this book is a must-read for understanding your situation and extricating yourself from it.

This book opens a whole new powerful path to creating a lean office. It
is not about trying to manipulate and adapt shop floor techniques to the
office but rather about a simplistic team based approach in creating
lean processes. The methods keep lean simple and straightforward. If I
had to pick only one book on the subject of creating a lean office this
would be the book, it is a great addition to my ready references!

Excellent book!! It reflects the 13 forms of waste commonly found in the office, and a definition of waste that pertains specifically to the office. It is then backed by team-based techniques designed to eliminate the waste creating lean processes, which are then automated utilizing the existing software. Well written, easy to understand, and designed specifically for the office.

The techniques discussed in the book were not about trying to apply lean shop floor techniques to the office but rather about applying lean office techniques to the office to fully eliminate the 13 forms of waste found in the office. This work opens a whole new dimension of what can be accomplished especially when applying the current computer system to automate the newly created lean office processes. This book will become "the classic" in regards to creating a lean office well beyond anything else out there.

Creative Work vs. Just a Job

Creativity at Work is a must read for anybody who wants their job to be more than just work. It surveys all of the elements of an organization and then clearly supports the reader on his/her professional journey with the necessary tools to attain results. It's well-written, easy to read and tells all of the stories one needs to stimulate their creativity and own ideas. It is the only book that I have read and finished believing that I could now add value to the folks I work with in innovative and concrete ways.

Theory Made Practical

Review Date: 2002-11-23
Books on creativity are often interesting to read but almost impossible to translate into practice. Not so with this book.

This book broadened my personal definition of creativity; it challenged me to consider creativity as a core competency in more than just innovation. Distinguishing it from other books that I have read, it focuses more on the specific outcomes of creativity instead of the sometimes mysterious process of creativity. It makes the often implicit skills involved in creativity much more explicit.

On a practical note, it serves as a toolkit with an array of different assessment tools, exercises, and suggestions for generative work that can be tailored to different organizational needs at different times. We're currently using these tools in a healthcare setting, but I think they could be equally well applied to a myriad of other settings.

This book has been a great addition to my business bookshelf - accessible, easy to read, and full of useful suggestions - I think of it as a user's guide to fostering and tailoring creativity in the work place.

This text was required for a class in School Administration in my post grad class at Seton Hall University. The author is easy to follow along with as he presents theories along with examples of organizational life in the education system. An excellent chapter on the Culture and Climate of Schools can be used by administrators in any field to better recognize these characteristics, as well as organizational health, before taking steps to change the culture or climate. Another very good chapter deals with Leadership in Schools and helps to identify the various theories of leadership and the strengths and weaknesses associated with each type. A great book for administrators in either the private or public sector.

Euthanasia in the Netherlands

Review Date: 2004-12-26
Raphael Cohen-Almagor from the University of Haifa has investigated, studied and published on the issue of euthanasia over the past many years with a special interest in the policy and practice aspects of physician assisted suicide.
This book is a case study over several years of the experience and practice from the Netherlands, where physican assisted suicide has taken place for a long period with this Dutch experience often used by other countries in their ethical and legal search for a solution to this complex problem.
The book is divided into three parts: the background with research reports on the medical practice of euthanasia in the Netherlands from 1990, 1995 and 2001 and the interpretations, fieldwork by the author in the Netherlands in 1999, 2001 and 2002 and finally the conclusions.
The author has produced a well researched addition to this complex and controvertial issue of mercy killing on the basis of an in-depth study of the situation in the Netherlands. The author had published and supported the performance of euthanasia before his study in the Netherlands, but he visits changed his mind and views concerning the practicality and implementation of euthanasia. The shortcomings of the Dutch experience is presented in a clear language and in the conclusion the author provide a set of guidelines for physician assisted suicide to prevent abuse and misuse.
This book has relevance for physicians, nurses, public health professionals, lawyers, sociologists, policy makers and professionals dealing with ethics and the topic of euthanasia.

An excellent book on an important topic
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-13
Euthanasia in the Netherlands is an excellent book on an important topic. It succeeds in giving an even-handed appraisal of Dutch euthanasia practices, providing a better understanding and valuable insights of the Dutch experience with euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. Cohen-Almagor analyses clearly and accurately the weaknesses of the policy and offers recommendations for correcting the deficiencies and developing a sounder policy. He combines an overview of the literature with analyses and interpretations of the intriguing interviews he conducted with key people in the Netherlands.

Cohen-Almagor's book is critical but judicious. He gives a balanced account of the views with which he disagrees and he carefully explains the basis for his disagreement. His style of writing is straightforward, clear, easy to follow, logical, and coherent. Bioethicists and other scholars in medicine, public health, and law will be interested in this book. College teachers of medical ethics will also find it valuable, and educated general readers with a special interest in euthanasia will find it helpful.

Book in the tradition of Dworkin, Rawls and Kelsen
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-13
Writing a book on the Dutch experience with euthanasia is not an easy matter. Several reasons can explain the difficulty. First of all the ethics of the present palliative and terminal care has not been spelled out in detail until recent years. The difficulties every physician meets more than once in his career when confronted with a sincere wish of the patient to die in a humane way in a situation of unbearable suffering, are still puzzling for moral and legal thinking. Secondly, our ways of legal and public thinking are still not adapted to the situation in which death is a part of life, not so much as a natural fact but as a process that can be controlled. The goals of medicine to uphold human dignity and to alleviate suffering are at stake in this process. The Dutch policy to aim at a system of both legal clarity and control is perhaps at this moment the most articulated answer to the difficulties, but will almost certainly not be the last word in the issues of death and dying.

Rafi Cohen-Almagor has contributed much to the ongoing discussions by interviewing all the prominent legal, moral, political and medical people involved in the development of the Dutch legal ruling. His analysis of the interviews is based on clear, lucid thinking and argument. Unlike some others he tries to stay with the facts without entangling them with moral or political prejudice. Instead he tries to develop a view according to best standards of academic thinking. In the end he gives his own conclusion based on his experiences. One does not need to subscribe them in order to appreciate the work Prof. Cohen-Almagor has done. This book will certainly be helpful in every discussion on the legal and moral principles of assistance in dying, in traditions of legal philosophy such as the schools of Dworkin, Rawls and Kelsen. It can help physicians, nurses and others engaged in palliative care to sharpen their views in the ethics of palliative care as well in the forms of public and legal control that are needed in the burdensome but rewarding work of assistance in dying.

Helpful Votes: 18 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-10
Explores the design of the physical workplace and the role this factor plays in improving productivity and operational effectiveness. Based on a four-year research project conducted by the MIT School of Architecture and Planning's Space Planning and Organization Research Group, this book introduces the concept of Process Architecture, meaning engaging a wide array of stakeholders in rethinking the dynamic relationship between work processes and the spatial, technological, financial, and organizational environments with which these processes occur. The authors provide a comprehensive explanation of the approach and framework with cases from the field. For those concerned with organizational strategy and design, this work introduces a key aspect-the workplace-often overlooked in organization change initiatives. This is an thoughtful book with original thinking. Highly recommended.
