I got this book when I first started working as a paralegal for a patent attorney. It gave me a great understanding of Intellectual
Property. Great to learn the basics, of course there was more to learn on the job.

well written ad very complete. It's worth the price.

This set of books is the definitive word on trandemark and unfair competition law. It is regularly cited by courts, and relied
on by trademark atty. including me. If you want to know anything about trademarks or unfair competition, here is the place
to look. But look at a current or updated set, not one that's 10 or more years old. Jim Hawes

There is very thorough coverage of issues in both of these volumes (see table of contents). Be warned that many of the pieces
adopt a conventional, uncritical, pro-IP attitude. In these thousands of pages isn't so much critical discussion of the ways
in which the quest for IP might distort the mission of the university, e.g. Nor does the piece on biotechnology and indigenous
peoples question the assumptions that economic efficiency is a Good Thing and that patents are incentives to innovation.
Nonetheless, some of the articles, such as ones on nonassertion agreements, ethical issues in biotechnology patenting, and reservation of rights for humanitarian uses, are quite thoughtful, albeit brief. The article on laboratory notebooks is well-illustrated with photos of best practices. So there's a lot to learn, even if you don't always agree with the policies or premises that many authors take for granted.
Probably the most significant thing to know is that the entire contents are available for free online in downloadable pdfs (both as individual chapters, and also entire volumes). Search on any of the articles by title, and you'll find it. I got the hard copy of Vol. 1 before finding this out; aside from the expense, it's rather huge and unwieldy -- not the kind of thing you can easily drag with you when you duck out for a latte somewhere. But considering the typical pricing and vapidity of most books that purport to discuss IP management, even the hardcover version of these two volumes is still a good value, if your biceps are up to it.

Intellectual Property: The Many Faces of the Public Domain is a meticulous and scholarly examination of the concept of intellectual
property. A thorough historical analysis combined with balanced discussion of contemporary debate on the issue, especially
in the modern world when technology and the very definition of intellectual property is changing faster than ever before.
"The critical factor in securing free speech in a vibrant public domain is not so much the extent to which material is subject
to property rights, but rather the nature of the right-holder and, specifically, the degree of power wielded generally by
that right-holder in intellectual space." Highly recommended for college libraries and anyone seeking an in-depth, exhaustively
researched account on the subject.

Wonderful, concise account of complex issues

This is a wonderful review of the legal and legislative matters facing the computer industry. It concisely follows recent
developments without editorializing a position. A tremendous amount of research obviously went into this book. It is well
organized, creating a flow from one idea to the next. While being very thorough, it is written for both the layman and
those with a background in the field. It achieves a seeming impossibility: an entertaining book about complex legal issues.
I can only hope to see future books by the authors, Jonathan Band and Masanobu Katoh.
