FOR EVERY TEENAGE GIRL WITH A DREAM

How sad that this book is out of print. This was one of my favorite books as a teenager; I must have checked it out of our school library a hundred times! Now that I am a "grown-up" teaching teenagers, I appreciate this book even more. I was lucky enough to get an out-of-print copy, which I read and re-read as soon as I received it. For every intelligent teenage girl who has ever felt alone, out of place, or out of touch, this book is like a look in the mirror. The protagonist, Stephanie, is a unique and wonderful character, full of questions about life, relationships, prejudice, independence, and the future. The book addresses many relevant issues for young adults. I highly recommend it!

Patrick Lawler's first book "A Drowning Man is Never Tall Enough." takes us on a journey through the mind of a man who sees the obvious in a new way. This book is full of both technical merit and brilliance. Patrick uses the language in a way that makes it come back to life. This is Patrick's bow to the gods of poetry however, in Patrick's case the gods bowed back.

Valuable tool for the rock-hounder, needs better maps.

Precise detailed listings, excellent index, should be in every rock-hounders back-pack. However, it's only failing are the rather crude maps. The maps would be more helpful if they included topographic elevation bars. But, all in all, a very delightful reference tome.

Printed on heavy stock, water-resistant paper and featuring stunning full color photography throughout, East Gulf Coastal Plain Wildflowers is a field guide wildflowers found in a region of the United States including Southwest Georgia, Northwest Florida, Southern Alabama, Southern Mississippi, and parts of Southeastern Louisiana. An introduction and overview offers maps, information about floral diversity, and tips for using the guide, yet the bulk of East Gulf Coastal Plain Wildflowers is devoted to single-column entries of individual blossoms. Each flower's entry includes a color photograph, extensive text description, information on its bloom season and habitat range, and more. A glossary and index round out this superb quick-reference field guide.

Easter Island Info You Can't Get Elsewhere
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-18
This is an excellent book, gathering information from many sources regarding one of the 3-4 most important sites on Easter Island. This book is, I believe, writen by someone on the Easter Island Foundation board and it is just as helpful as the vast amount of information available on their site. Here the text is very informative -- although I wish there was more given. A very reliable summary on the subject (again, you really can't get all of it together in one place, except here.)

This is a small pocket book so you can carry it with you when you visit Orongo. There are many many illustrations showing details of the site. They are by Dr. Georgia Lee who is one of a handful of reliable world experts on Easter Island.

The long-awaited definitive study.

Given all the books that have been written about the Tudor period it is extraordinary that none has covered Thomas Howard, the 3rd Duke of Norfolk. He lived through the reigns from Henry VII to Mary and played a major part in the maintenance of the Tudor grip on England. He even survived being sentenced to death for treason under Henry VIII, and spending Edward VI's reign in the Tower. Not bad for a staunchly conservative man of Catholic persuasions. (He avoided the block because Henry VIII chose the day appointed for his execution to die). Thomas Howard was released in the reign of Mary and died shortly afterwards at the age of 80. It is hard to think of any other aristocrat who was so fortunate. However, for once in the Tudor period, justice was done; he had backed his sovereign through thick and thin. Indeed, he has been much maligned as being no more than a 'yes-man' to Henry VIII and none too bright with it. But although he made no great claims to learning his contribution was immense. He communicated directly with diplomats, accumulated many works of art (preserving several of the Holbein portraits that are increasingly well-known today). He is perhaps best thought of as the last of the feudal lords, able to raise effective armies almost at will (though always in the interests of his liege sovereign).

David Head is apologetic about the length of time it has taken to produce this work, which has been gestating for over a decade, notwithstanding that it formed the basis of his doctoral thesis. However it is clear to the educated eye that a colossal amount of work has gone into it. It is increasingly rarely that one can read a history book and be sure that it is entirely the work of the person whose name appears on the cover. Possibly the reason no-one has attempted a similar work to this in the intervening period is that its reputation for excellence and academic rigour (sorry, I'm English!) travels before it.

This book is worth every penny to the serious scholar, although it may come as a bit of a shock to those who thought that Tudor History and Antonia Fraser were synonymous!

This book is written by an expert in the field in Irish archeology and it should be read by anyone who wants to know the truth of pre-Christian Ireland. Harbison's descriptions of the ancient artifacts, the tombs, the gold, the jewelry, are excellent for the information he gives on early Irish life. The Irish Bronze Age is particularly interesting. Although maybe not written for a general reader it is a great book to have for accurate and informed reference. I highly recommend it.
