Mr. Wanner certainly has a talent for spinning a tale. Not since Tom Clancey's Sum of all Fears and Executive Orders has a book grabbed my attention from beginning to end. The writing style is such that you feel like you're seeing the story unfold through the eyes of the characters. The book ends where you can't help but think the author has plans for the return of Robert Isen, the book's main character. Hats off to Mr. Wanner for a quick paced, well written novel.

Highly recommended, Pietro Tomassi

finding monastic peace for lay persons

Jamison is Abbot of the Benedictine monastery outside London that was the location for the surprisingly popular BBC TV series titled "The Monastery." He imparts commentary on the seven virtues the monastery's spiritual regimen centers on. "Before we can take the step into the sanctuary [of the peacefulness coming with higher spirituality], we have to find the doorway and that doorway is virtue," writes Jamison. The prized virtues are silence, contemplation, obedience, humility, community, spirituality, and hope. The daily regimen of the regular monks involves practicing them and seeking them to attain increasing levels of spirituality. The TV series followed five lay persons temporarily taking part in this regimen to gain better understanding of the spiritual life and how to grow in spirituality themselves.

An instruction book for mindful living in the benedictine tradition.

This is a wonderful book on the rule of Benedict. Abbot Jamison does an excellent job in conveying a simple message of the realistic application of Benedictine spirituality in everday life. I finished the book in about 4 days, and I intend to re-read it again. A very thoughtful, peaceful and inspiring read. I highly recommend this book along with Mertons "New seeds of Contemplation."

Absorbing Benedict's Insights
Helpful Votes: 45 out of 47 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-28
In this work, Christopher Jamison, abbot of a Benedictine monastery near London and host of the acclaimed BBC documentary series The Monastery, offers monastic steps for "people of all religious beliefs and those with none." Few will be able to simply read this book, but instead will find themselves absorbing it.

Jamison explains that the Rule of Benedict is not a rule book at all, but "a book of insights about Christian living, with some practical suggestions (rules) about how to put those insights into practice." Jamison's book is organized into seven steps for overcoming the busyness of modern life in favor of finding sanctuary: silence, contemplation, obedience, humility, community, spirituality, and hope. In each chapter, he compares current cultural attitudes to Benedict's views on the topic, gives examples in monastic life, and suggests applications for the larger world.

In the chapter on humility, the abbot explains the discipline involved in separating our desires from our actions. If, when I am hungry, I wait before eating, he writes, the link between desire and action is slowed, and I learn to be more reflective in my response to desire and to contain my desire.

In the section on sacred reading (lectio divina), Jamison provides a model that is much more personal and less technique-based than that often used in groups. He defines lectio simply as God's speaking to the reader as "you," and your being moved to address God in response. At the end of the book he shares a personal lectio divina example based on the parable of the prodigal son.

Where was this book when I was in undergraduate school? Now that I am teaching nursing I have found it very useful in that it has given me a rare opportunity to present a very complex and hard to understand block of material is a manner much easier for students to understand. It is packed with easy to understand pictures, diagrams, and graphs that help teach the concept in a way that is "reader friendly". The illustrations are unbelievable and a great tool used by the author to present the ideas to the reader. I have even had requests from the Occupational Therapy faculty at our college to use the book for their lectures as well.. Great Job ! I would highly recommend it to anyone, whether a staff nurse or a faculty member at a university or college...

I read this book 25 years ago, yet the truth rings the same today. I was very depressed at the time and didn't understand what was going on in my Christian life. How could I as a Christian be suffering with depression? Then I read this book, which used II Corithians 1:3-10 as it's basis, and found that the Apostle Paul stated he dispaired even of life. It states, how God is the God of all comfort. So if Paul the Apostle was dispairing of life and looked to the God of all comfort for help, then so should I. Dr. Swindoll goes into much greater detail, and does a very good job of driving the truth home. It helped me tremendously, know that God doesn't look down on us in our struggles, but has compassion. I highly recommend this book. I reference it in my suicide prevention website, (www.bungechord.com/suicide),and a link to purchase it, at Amazon.com of course. If you are stuggling with depression and/or in pain, this is a book for you.

Since 1988, I have listened to Louise Hay and bought her books. This particular CD is one of Louise Hay's best work ever! This is a short CD only about 30 minutes (great to listen to in the morning before starting the day or on a break at work). This is a very soothing CD The sound quality is excellent and the message truly inspired me to think about:
1) How to love yourself and how to accept yourself. (Part One)
2) How to forgive yourself and others. (Part Two)
This CD I will listen to often because it has caused me to realize just how important it is to love yourself and forgive yourself for past mistakes and to forgive others. It it true freedom to do thse things! I highly recommend this to anyone in need of making a positive change to your life! It really works!

American Buddhist Nun with practical advice
Helpful Votes: 39 out of 41 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-30
This 2-cassette set reflects the author's usual warmth, humor, kindliness, and down-to-earth approach to improving one's life through Buddhist means. This set focuses on the 4 Immeasurables or limitless qualities: Maitri (loving-kindness), compassion, joy, and equanimity. She points out where her master, Trungpa Rinpoche digressed from the literal meanings of these four in practice as well as certain modifications suggested by the great 14th century master, Longchenpa (Longchen Rabjam). For example, the latter suggested meditating upon equanimity to stabilize prior to sending out loving kindness etc. Embedded in the technique is to send these 4 out consecutively, but within each "sending" to first apply it to someone you care about, then a neutral, then someone you mildly dislike (building up to stronger feelings), and finally to everyone. For example, compassion is the wish that everyone be free of suffering and the cause of suffering. Trungpa Rinpoche's modifications include: joy being the appreciation of peoples' basic goodness. Ani Chödrön's (she is a Buddhist nun, thus the title Ani) wonderful turns of phrase include: "We look for strength in what weakens us," "We've gotten really good at making matters worse," and seeking happiness without a hangover. My only problem with this set is that it's too short! Also, since it doesn't include the practice of Tonglen and some of her other main teachings, I'd recommend the 6-tape "Awakening Compassion" or "Noble Heart" set over this one. It includes virtually all of this one plus much more-but then it's longer and costs more. If you haven't had the great uplifting joy of experiencing Pema Chödrön's tapes, this would be a fine one to start with. She's also written a number of fine books (e.g. "Places that Scare You") and has a terrific video entitled, "Good Medicine."

Escape from Suffering

Review Date: 2007-01-12
Pema Chodron presents meditation techniques that require very little experience with meditation and are easily accessible to anyone who wants to learn to transform pain into love.

In a world filled with suffering, it can at times be overwhelming to balance your emotions so you can affect change. By understanding our own fears, we can then address some of the root causes of our unhappiness. This CD introduces some intriguing concepts and solutions and presents the following topics for discussion:

Mindfulness and Maitri
What is the root cause of happiness and suffering?
Unlimited joy
Compassion
The Enemies of Compassion
Introduction to the Practice of Compassion

A guided Maitri session is included on both CDs. I love how Pema Chodron honors her teachers by giving credit where credit is due. She explains what she was taught and effectively translates ancient teachings and stories into methods for modern application.

With warmth and wisdom Pema Chodron shows the way to a more flexible, open life filled with love and compassion. She says that often we look for strength in what weakens us. An intriguing concept!

Through mindfulness and meditation practice (more like a visualization than complete solitude and she guides you through the process), you can more attuned and receptive.

I love her idea about using words and actions to make things better, but it isn't always easy. Patience is one of the qualities you have to develop to follow these teachings and to get to a place of peace, there is suffering. Even after peace, there is some suffering, but you may be able to turn the suffering into creativity and make it an energy you use for good. It can be a very empowering moment when you start to turn negativity into healing.

You can start to use the meditation techniques immediately in daily life and they have many applications. In a fight with someone you love or even in a disagreement with a stranger - Learn how to calm the situation and take back control of your emotions.

What is the root of suffering?
What causes happiness to grow?

The answers make perfect sense, but take time to put into practice. I can highly recommend this CD set to anyone who is making meditation a part of their life. Pema Chodron is an American Buddhist nun, but her wisdom has universal appeal. This seems to be the recording from the session on DVD called: Good Medicine. I can recommend both and you may also enjoy watching the DVD to learn more about Tonglen meditation.

I like Pema's books because they are full of simple, no nonsense advice for daily living, but when I hear her voice which was how I was initially introduced to her on PBS t.v. something magical takes place for me. She has so much compassion and humor and a deep empathy for the human condition that comes across in a very embracing way when she speaks. Her words resonate for me and every time I replay one of her CDs I hear something new or I hear an interpretation I hadn't heard the last time. You'd think a CD would grow old but hers don't, for me. Maybe it's that I'm a 52 yr. old single career mom with a love of nature and a drive to find balance in my world that draws me to her. Whether she's speaking about getting along with coworkers or on how to handle depression, I'm right there soaking up her wisdom and kindness. Learning to love myself has been a focus of mine for a few years and her teachings are instrumental on my path...I always find a new teacher JUST when the timing is perfect. Many of my friends have started listening to her as well.

This is a great book for anyone who has been divorced. Too often, many are guilt-laden about their divorce, even after they have sought forgiveness, and healed past relationships. It is even more difficult for the divorced when the church considers them second-class citizens. When God forgives, He forgives completely. That is what Full Restoration is about. With a
special Resources Chapter, it provides resources for any Christian who has hurt through the process of divorce.
An easy read, yet a thorough examination of traditional thinking that has limited forgiven and restored believers from all that God has for them.

I am one of the featured authors in this book. I was asked to write a chapter and I accepted the offer for a couple of reasons. First, I have personally seen what God has done in certain individuals lives after they have gone through a divorce. God heals and fully restores anyone(including a pastor) and desires to use them for His Kingdom work. Full Restoration helps to encourage those who have been divorced to seek God's forgiveness, and helps to show that God's grace is sufficient for them and that they do not need to seek any approval from man for their return to Christian service.

We've all experienced pain and loss in our lives and we've all made mistakes. If you're one of the folks who has gone through the pain of divorce, or if you know someone who has, this book could be the encouragement needed. The book does not give a stamp of approval for Christians divorcing (in fact, quite the opposite), but the book focuses on the idea of - it did happen, now what? Is a person no longer useful? Because they were a Christian and got divorced does that mean they should have known better? Are they now excluded from some roles within the church?
Full Restoration addresses those questions by pointing to the Bible and showing how God desires to fully restore His people. His grace is greater than we can imagine and greater than we allow Him to work. No matter what we've done, no matter how stupid it was, how hurtful it was, He is a God who still forgives and loves us nonetheless. There's nothing we can do to earn His grace and love and nothing we can do to make Him stop loving us.
This is one of those books that you'll get for friends and family because its message is encouraging and will hopefully bring back to the church some people who left out of pain and disgrace. This book is meant to heal and encourage. And I think it does just that.

This review was originally written for this book, but somehow found itself linked to Dr. Nasr's collected papers, edited by Chittick. "The Garden of Truth" is an absolutely beautiful book. Although it might be called a primer, it is deep and rich and filled with sentences that make you stop and ponder and contemplate the wonders of the inward and outward aspects of the Divine. The chapter on love and beauty alone is pure gold. What I also liked about Dr. Nasr's narrative is his respect and appreciation for other mystical traditions, both East and West. His is no narrow view. I am a Jungian analyst by profession, but an amateur Sufi, amateur meaning one who does something for the sheer love of it. This book has deepend that love.

The Premier Compendium of Sufism in the English Language

Review Date: 2007-09-30
Seyyed Hossein Nasr is a rare phenomena in these days of religious decadence, earth-ravaging materialism, and all around despair. Nasr's sober call to return to our religions, not to the truncated and diseased state into which we've reduced them, but to their still beating hearts which are everywhere the same, is the driving force behind this latest title "The Garden of Truth", which is a sort of inner sequel to his "The Heart of Islam" published in 2002. This 'still beating heart' is not other than the esoteric or inner dimension of religion which informs its outer practices and doctrines, and it is this that communicates most directly the religion's presiding idea. In Islam this 'beating heart' is what we call in the West Sufism, but which is also known as Tasawwuf in Arabic, and 'Irfan in Persian. This living tradition, which goes back to the noble Prophet Muhammad, consists of many disciplines, all of which seek to purify our soul and render it transparent vis-à-vis the Divine Attributes. And while tomes have been written on the myriad aspects of this tradition it is incredibly difficult to give a concise summary that does even the least bit of justice to it. In fact I can think of no one better qualified to undertake such a task than Seyyed Hossein Nasr. Over the past four decades Nasr has, more than any other Muslim scholar, informed the Western world about not only the Islamic tradition, but its central virtues, which are preserved most succinctly in Sufism. Covering Nasr's qualifications for this is beyond the scope of this humble review, but suffice it to say that he has lived the reality of Sufism for over fifty years, has studied under traditional masters of Islamic philosophy/gnosis, and is recognized as a peerless scholar of Islamic civilization, its arts, and its philosophical tradition.

While "The Garden of Truth" is a summary it is not simply another academic appraisal. Instead this was written as a Sufi treatise for Western seekers. While summarizing the basic doctrines of Sufism, its historical unfolding, its luminaries and prerogatives Nasr also draws a basic map of the Path for the potential wayfarer. Obviously a book can never take the place of a living Master, but books can be useful supports for embracing the spiritual life. Also, it should be noted that although this is a summary it is by no means a light read. Since Nasr's perspective is informed by Islam's long tradition of knowledge-based mysticism his interpretations of Sufi doctrine, symbolism, and rites are tempered with that principial knowledge associated with speculative metaphysics. It is this edge that allows Nasr to communicate the sublimity of the Islamic vision, and of Sufism in particular, to a Western audience with all of the nuance necessary to make its central doctrines and practices intelligible.

As the destructive and hedonistic culture of the secularized West dominates more and more of the globe, crushing indigenous cultures, erasing the traces of their religions, and subordinating their economies, one wonders what could curb the sheer madness such a domination entails. For the spiritual man the only answer is inwardness, self-reform, and trust in God. For some of us Islam, and Sufism, are the means whereby these goals are sought, and I can think of no better a guide than Seyyed Hossein Nasr.

This is an excellent book by the renowned Sufi scholar, Seyyed Hossein Nasr. It is a book I wish many fundamentalist Christian and Muslims would read because it is a lucid and loving explanation of the inner religion of truth where both Muslims and Christian could find harmony in the oneness of God.

Sufism is the mystical part of Islam and its deepest truths correspond to the truths put forth by mystics of other religions. When people go beyond the outer religious practices and rituals they find the oneness of Life.

Nasr covers the subject of Sufism brillantly as he is more than an outer scholar. There is too much to review, but some of the topics he writes about are the role of love and beauty in the spiritual life, the goal of Sufi practices, and spiritual masters and disciples. He also writes about various Sufi saints and schools of thought in different areas of the world.

He also writes some about jihad, which is a worrisome subject to many because some fundamentalists use it to justify violent actions including killing others. Nasr makes it clear that the greater jihad is to conquer one's one ego and to become spiritually victorious by reaching the garden of truth. If you see everyone as part of the oneness, why would you want to hurt anyone else? Violence only begets violence, but love can amplify itself and is eternally satisfying.

What I like about Sufism are the explanations of the oneness of God. For example, Only God can say "I", everyone else should say "we", as in we are the body of God.

There is too much profound thought in this book to summarize here. I just highly recommend this book to everyone who is interested in helping Christians and Muslims to understand each other as beings who are part of the same, one and only, Creator of the universe. Many books have been written on the above topic but the words in this book are poetic and comes from author's heart: a heart that not just knows but have seen the vision. This book provides a beautiful blending of authentic Sufi view and its higher vision from which this teaching originates. Nasr is a master to use contemporary language to explain authentic Islamic thoughts of higher knowledge of the heart; his use of perennial philosophy perspective to explain classic Islamic esoteric teaching is marvelous.

This book require some understanding of the Sufi path; it can appeal to any serious seeker on the path of any authentic and traditional religion. Read it with open mind and heart.

Seyyed Hossein Nasr is professor of Islamic Studies at George Washington University and the author of many books including The Heart of Islam. This erudite, enlightening, and wide-ranging overview of Sufism is the result of 50 years of both scholarly study and existential participation in Islam's mystical tradition. He notes at the start of this survey:

"The Sufi tradition contains a vast metaphysical and cosmological set of doctrines elaborated over a long period by masters of gnosis. It contains methods of spiritual realization that address nearly all the different spiritual possibilities on the levels of action, love, and knowledge. It has preserved over many centuries going back to the Prophet a regular chain of transmission of initiatic power (walayah/wilayah) and the grace (al-barakah) necessary for the spiritual journey. And above all, it can enable men and women to reach a state of sanctity."

Nasr believes that Sufism is uniquely qualified to help spiritual seekers in the West appreciate other religions and to serve as an antidote to Islamic fundamentalism. With its rich blend of mystical poetry, its diverse literature, its spiritual ethics, and its many musical masterworks, this path of the heart speaks to all those who yearn for a closer intimacy with God, a richer interior life, and a spiritual repertoire of practices that give life depth and meaning.

The book is divided into sections on:

* What It Means to Be Human (Who Are We and What Are We Doing Here?)
* Truth (The Knowledge That Illuminates and Delivers from the Bondage of Ignorance)
* Love and Beauty (The Fire That Attracts and Consumes, the Peace That Calms and Liberates)
* Goodness and Human Action (To Do His Will, to Conform to the Divine Norm)
* How Do We Reach the Garden of Truth? (The Path to the One)
* Access to the Center (Sufism Here and Now)
* The Sufi Tradition and the Sufi Orders (Reflections on the Manifestation of Sufism in Time and Space)
* The Tradition of Theoretical Sufism and Gnosis

The Sufi path leads from the deserts of forgetfulness, selfishness, and separation to the Garden of Truth where individuals can realize their true identity. According to Nasr, followers of the path are expected to be God's servant and always grateful, no matter what the circumstances. The author acknowledges that the road to the Garden of Truth involves acquiring and realizing unitive knowledge and being immersed in love and beauty. Sufis are known as "people of the heart," and intimacy with God means acting with humility, charity, nobility, sincerity, and truthfulness. Another practice is imitation of the Prophet Muhammad, who modeled a glorious way to live. Sufi masters talk about the importance of adab, a form of courtesy and kindness which pervades everything one does, from greeting people to eating to sitting in a gathering. Shaykhs help dervishes learn the spiritual disciplines and virtues, which are the ornaments of the soul.

According to Nasr, the integration of the contemplative life and the active life is the hallmark of Sufi spirituality. In these uncivil times, we need more people who have been trained in the spiritual efficacy of loving actions. A life of beauty is a life where attention, being present, gratitude, peace, and compassion are manifested at home and at work. Sufism also nurtures the spiritual arts which in turn can transform our lives both privately and publicly. The Garden of Truth by Seyyed Hossein Nasr is a very helpful illumination of this beautiful path.

This book gives the history of Lectio Divina in addition to being a primer in how to use this 6th century form for praying the scriptures. I am a facilitator of a small group of eight and couldn't put the book down upon first reading. Try it; you'll like it!

Norvene Vest offers a wonderful introduction to an ancient tradition of prayer known as lectio divina. This type of prayer works well for small groups--I am using it in a weekly gathering of adults and we find the process one that opens us to God. I have also used the process with a group of youth who responded passionately to this process.

Vest's work is very helpful. Not only does she describe the approach, but she tells the stories of a small prayer group that tries this approach to illustrate more deeply the process.

This is a great resource for small groups and for individuals who want to learn a new way of praying.

. . . and ENCOUNTER WITH GOD." This is author Norvene Vest's definition of LECTIO DIVINA. Vest is strong on resources, including a significant appendix: "Praying the Scriptures Alone." There are many books listed as resources; mcHAIKU suggests you study these titles before going to your usual search engine to discover more aids.

The sub-title, "Praying the Scriptures in Small Groups," becomes a story of an imaginary group who use "Lectio Divina" for a year, as an encounter with God. The participants share their difficulties & successes after being persuaded to follow this very old, new-to-most-of-us method of study.

To become "gathered in the WORD" you must come together with a true willingness to LISTEN, to put judgements aside, to PRACTICE and to allow renewal to happen. It can be a powerful experience, and also can be continued on a long & regular basis, making a deep impact on the spiritual lives of participants.

The Lenten season would be an excellent time to experiment with /AND/OR practice Lectio Divina. Reviewer mcHAIKU cannot emphasize strongly enough how well this beautifully written book can "work" for people.

I have used this book to teach lectio divina to several groups. It is a user-friendly way for those completely unfamiliar with lectio divina to get started and to find answers to their questions. The book is based on a case study of a small group trying to learn the technique, including their successes and their struggles. A great place to start in learning this wonderful way to listen to God in scripture.

I have used this book repeatedly with groups to teach Lectio Divina. The case study contained in the book is a small group trying to learn lectio, struggling a bit, and asking questions. It allows typical participant questions to come up in a safe manner. If you buy only one book on lectio, buy this one!

A friend recommended this book for the manifold "nuggets of wisdom" it offers. "Getting a Life..." was tremendously insightful, practical and helpful as it offered concrete and realistic input on the often overwhelming concept of vocation.

Through numerous personal accounts and stories, quotes and maxims the reader can easily read and relate. I was encouraged by the lens LaReau offered by which to reflect upon vocation.

I thought it would be an ideal text to share with a close friend, in a book group of with a group on retreat. It is a stepping stone by which to feast on conversation and sharing of one's own path.

Thanks Renee for the gift of this book!

I can't believe that a young woman has written such a concise, thoughtful and intelligent book about the important issues that we never take the time to think about. The pages are rife with appropriate stories taken from the author's own life that vividly illustrate each point she is trying to get across. This is far from a preachy self-help book, it is valid in one's everyday life and will give you something to think about whether you are Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist or Atheist.
