Eda Goldstein does a great job of describing, in detail, Ego Psychology from a historical, theoretical, and practical perspective. I was particularly fond of Part II dealing with the ego and its functions and defenses. She writes with a clarity that is difficult to find when reading books dealing with detailed theoretical perspectives. I would highly recommend this book to socials workers and pyschologists alike. It is a wealth of information that you will find yourself referencing again and again.

This book is an excellent primer for clinical social workers working with volatile populations as it addresses ego functioning and deficits in depth. It additionally provides invaluable insight into borderline and other personality disordered individuals, as well as a survey of other noted theorists, besides Dr. Goldstein in the areas of ego functions.

Dr. Goldstein's book provides students with a survey of the major contributors to ego psychological theory. To her credit, she manages to effectively communicate sometimes difficult material without resorting to the complicated jargon that one often finds in similar psychoanalytic texts. Ego Psychology and Social Work Practice 2nd Edition enables beginners to appreciate some of the insights of the ego psychologists without having to read and interpret the original texts. This would be a daunting task and unnecessarily laborious for a beginning student. It also provides more experienced clinicians the opportunity to review material germane to clinical practice or as an accompaniment to more advanced reading.

This book is the result of more than fifteen years of teaching EMG to medical students, neurology residents first at the University of Pittsburgh and, lately, at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. The objective of this book is to provide a practical discussions of the most commonly encountered disorders in the EMG laboratory, using typical and real case studies.

I studied this book many times (resident, fellow, before exams), and every time I found myself learning from it more and more.
It is about 300 pages, with 25 cases. The first 16 cases deal with common entrapment neuropathies, radiculopathies, etc in upper and lower extremities (8 cases each). The last nine cases are oriented for generalized diseases such as Myasthenia, AIDP, botulism, etc. Each case starts with history/exam followed by few questions. The next 2-3 pages are the NCS/ENG findings. The next 5-15 pages (varies between cases) are rich with very informative discussion about the electrophysiological findings, anatomy with pictures and charts, clinical with few tables, then a lengthy electrophysiological explanations about the particular case and its differential diagnosis, with many tables( key EMG muscles, LEMS versus MG). The case ends with a follow up.
As I said above, I keep learning from this book, and I do not hesitate to recommend it.

My dads book, a great one.

Hi! I'm Linda Katirji, and Bashar Katirji is my dad. If you lived in my house in Ohio, you would know how long my dad worked on this book. Day and night he sat at this darn computor and wrote this book... he put so much hard work into it. Even though i cant understand half the "doctors lingo" as he calls it, (i'm only 13) i can see the effort he put into it and the satistfaction he got out of it. Even if only 10 people bought this book, he would be thrilled and i'm very proud of my dad. Dad, i applaud you.

This is an excellent review for the NREMT exam for EMT-B certification. It is well organized, helps you pinpoint areas where you need to study more, and is written very much like the actual test.

The questions in these practice tests are much more difficult than those found in online practice tests, which tend to be over-simplified. Just as important, this book is from an authoritative source; I found some answers in the online sources which were just plain wrong.

The NREMT exam is as much about test-taking ability as it is about subject matter knowledge, and that's where this book really helps. In particular, there are many questions on the actual exam where the choices contain information which looks very simple at first glance, but which in fact contains very subtle differences. The questions in this book give you those types of choices, and train you to read each question carefully looking for those nuances which are the difference between a right answer and a wrong answer.

Your first time through the questions in this book may be a wake-up call if you don't really know your stuff. But it's better to get a wake-up call before the test, rather than during the test. I passed on the first try. Good luck!

While I don't own it (yet) I've been impressed with it since first learning of it. While this is not a work on which most households would spend hundreds of dollars, there really is no substitute for Melton's masterpiece. Even defunct and/or oddball sects are included, such as Kennedy worshippers, the House of David, and schismatic versions of many faiths. The organization of this work is by theological classification (Holiness movement or Black Muslim for two examples), but the index is comprehensive.

An extremely important reference work.

In this mammoth work (which is regularly updated), Melton has provided clear and unbiased descriptions of virtually every religious body of any size operating in the United States today.

Every religious body is identified by the "family" into which it fits (or from which it came) eg. Western Liturgical Family, Eastern Liturgical Family, etc., and described in terms of date of founding, major beliefs, size, number of congregations, organizational structure, and, in many cases, contact information.

This book is a must in every university or seminary library -- regardless of religion or denomination. The serious scholar will also wish to have a copy.

An essential reference for scholars of religion

J. Gordon Melton's "Encyclopedia of American Religions" is a reference work to which I turn, year after year, in my work as both a scholar and journalist. And I eagerly look forward to each new edition (I viewed the 6th edition as I prepared this review).

This mammoth work contains both a series of essays on major religious traditions and a series of profiles of individual denominations, fellowships, and missions. The profiles on individual religious bodies number well over 2,300 in the 6th edition. Mailing addresses and bibliographic references (when available) for each individual body further add to the book's usefulness.

Melton covers everything from the largest mainstream denominations to the smallest and most esoteric bodies. His broad editorial vision takes in nearly every conceivable religious tradition: Christianity in all its permutations (Anglican, Lutheran, Pentecostal, etc.), Judaism, Hinduism and other Eastern traditions, Neo-Pagan groups, "flying saucer"-related fellowships, Atheist and Humanist associations, and more. Each entry is written in an objective manner.

The latest edition of this book should be in every library in Canada and the United States. Furthermore, serious journalists and scholars of religion will find this to be a useful and fascinating edition to their own private libraries.

I have read through both Volume 4A and 4B. These two texts are invaluable resources for teaching Environmental Chemistry at the Junior-graduate school level. Both books are well written and include the fundamentals of studying air, water, and soil pollution. As a former student of Dr. Yen, I can say without reservation, that he is a motivational and superior college professor. Now that I am teaching college-level courses, I always recommend that my students make the investment and purchase his books. Personally, I have found them to be invaluable as reference materials.

Environmental Chemistry is a fine text book. It would provide a solid basis for any Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering Course providing the basics in understanding Environmental Chemistry. The book features a quantitive, mathematical approach to the subject. It is well referenced. And the problems at the end of each chapter will help a student better understand the material presented in the text. I look forward to the publication of its companion volume.

I have found this book to be excellent. As a researcher, educator and consultant, I often need a book that explains chemistry and its impact in environmental engineering. Rarely have I found one book that covers the field so completely as this book. What I like most is that it is an applied book. Environmental Chemistry is clearly and concisely covered. Recommmend it as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate level classes as well as a general reference source for professionals.

The vol.4A of this book includes every topic of our environmental problems, from lithosphere to biosphere and was decribed from the view point of a engineer. Many principles of evvironmental chemistry and engineering models are introduced in this book. And all of these materials were written by the author in a very clear way, so the students can follow this book very easily. It would be a good book in the courses of environmental engineering or applied chemistry.

Comprehensive and Easy to Read

Review Date: 1998-12-16
This book provides an extensive introduction to environmental chemistry. Although it is most suitable for a graduate level course in environmental engineering, it is also a good reference book for chemical/petroleum engineers and environmental chemists. The short introduction for each chapter enables students or engineers to review the basic problems before going to the thoroughly discussion of the principles. The unique feature of this book is that the overall theme of the book is to link chemical principals with environmental issues.

The first chapters are an overview of physical, organic, analytical, colloid and surface chemistry. The technical level of the chemistry presented in these first chapters and subsequently applied in rest of the text are fairly high. This suggests that the student taking a course based upon this text needs to have some previous coursework in chemistry, particularly physical chemistry.

The remainder of this volume treats each of the five major global cycles (envirospheres), and focuses on the important environmental chemistry issues: The lithosphere - minerals and energy sources The atmosphere - air structure and properties The hydrosphere - water resources The pedosphere - soil chemistry The biosphere - life

The text is written clearly and topics are covered in a logical sequence. The book covers the important aspects of each of the envirospheres and is fairly comprehensive. No text (even in 762 pages) can cover everything, however. One omission noted, for example, was that there was no mention of natural gas hydrates in deep oceans or permafrost regions. These ice-like solids account for a significant amount of carbon in the lithosphere and also may play a role in the balance of methane as a greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. In the chapter of atmosphere, it is also lacks of some detailed discussion on free radical chain reactions, oxygen radicals, and hydroxyl Rradicals.

Each chapter concludes with a problem set. In many cases these exercises serve the purpose of giving a student an "order o magnitude" appreciation of different environmental chemical issues.

Besides references to other books and papers at the end of each chapter, there is an appendix that lists a number of relevant web sites. This is a nice touch for the new electronic age. One gripe is that several figures have very small type from being shrunk to fit, and so the text is very small, and sometimes is barely legible.

There is a companion text, volume 4B. This book has as its focus the application of chemical engineering processes and unit operations to solving environmental problems.

Review Date: 2007-12-22
Its been some years since I first read Escape from Babel, although I still tell people it is one of my favorite books describing what many now call the third wave of counseling. This is a book for counselors and therapists. Miller et. al. do this fabulous job of explaining how the idea of counseling has evolved from a deficit-based, modern operation to a client-centered, constructivist, outcome-oriented operation. The big difference: we as therapists are no longer in the driver's seat! It is the clients who are in charge of their own change! These guys show the research, write confidently and informedly, and they bring us along through their story to an end that leaves us motivated to change our practice. And, we shouldn't forget that this book has a companion book that reports on client stories that illustrate this books ideas. Overall, this is necessary reading for anyone who studies the evolution of change work. JN

This excellent text for counselors, social workers and psychologists covers the rationale, value and techniques of highly effective brief therapies. It is full of interesting and useful case examples that make the challenge of brief therapy dialog easy to learn and implement. I not only use it myself, but have insisted that the entry level counselors that I supervise buy a copy and become familiar with the techniques it describes. Jonathan Williamson, MA, LPC

I am especially glad to have stumbled upon Escape From Babel sooner rather than later in my career. In a most straightforward way it cuts to the chase about what it means to be a part of effective therapy; it reminds that clients (and their experiences) are nothing less than extraordinary when given the opportunity to have a role in their therapy; and it will encourage you to look again at the role of ethics in the profession. I encourage new and experienced therapists and therapists-in-training to absorb the messages in this book. Don't spend money on all the different "latest and greatest" technique books; this is a far more valuable investment!

This book, drawing on current research findings and the authors' extensive clinical experience, reminds us that it's not the hottest new techniques or the therapist's theoretical orientation that makes for effective therapy. When satisfied clients are asked what made the the difference, their most frequent answer is a meaningful encounter with a caring, responsive human being whom the client felt understood his concerns and validated his strengths and resources. Many of us in the helping professsions seem to need this reminder.

Wow! I have never seen the truth of the gospel laid out so clearly in a modern-day book. So many gospels out there do not spell out the truth, but this one gives a full understanding of what Jesus was teaching.

In reading this book, God opened my eyes to my own hypocricy. Since then, I have found so much joy in knowing what it means to surrender my life to Jesus. This book will certainly help anyone who is truly searching for the heart of God.

This book saved my life.

Review Date: 2004-04-08
This book literally "saved my life". I was in an abusive marriage with my husband's threats and violence intensifying. I finally left our family home to find safety. I was scared and confused. I would wake up in the middle of the night in fear and cry out to God, "Father, what is your Will for me. Please show me Your Way." A peace would come over me and I would be able to sleep for a few more hours.

I was given a copy of "The Essential Piece" by a man that I worked with. It was not easy reading but there was life, real life in what was written. I began to see how "lukewarm" my walk with the Lord had been. I started to understand the cost of being a disciple (Luke 14:26) and the accompanying joy of giving up everything for Jesus. My life has not been the same. I would highly recommend this book and also Timothy Williams' book called "Even the Demons Believe."

The Essential Piece is the first example I have had in my life of true Christianity written down. When this book was given to me I grabbed it up and read the first page or so and then just as quickly put it down. I knew then that when I did read it my life was going to change. Not too soon after my husband and I read it together and knew we had never known the true living God. I began to understand all the things I wondered about that Jesus said and did. I finally saw, like those in the Bible, that I CRUCIFIED JESUS and I began to cry out "What must I do to be saved?". And that was just the beginning. You can read this in Calvary Road or Humility , but this generation, in which the love of most has grown cold, needs The Essential Piece, the cross.

For three years I attended a church every Sunday and participated in a couple of lukewarm, at best, cell groups in my area. I thought of myself as an "on fire" Christian because I was always there for my church to help when they needed it. When I read this book my heart dropped and my eyes looked up toward heaven (Daniel 4:34). Until that point I had never actually considered what Jesus Christ had to say, I just read and repeated His words (John 5:39-40). This book is not the Bible, no other book is THE Bible. But it just may be your Philip (Acts 8:30-31) in a time when the love of many has grown cold. Consider not the words of this author, but the Words of Christ, for He alone can put the piece in the puzzle where it belongs in your life.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who thinks they are saved and going to heaven, because you may have an essential piece missing from your walk and you may not even realize it. This book will revoluntionize your life and walk. I also highly recommend Tim's book, Whisper Revival, easier to "take" but also critical to understanding the times in which we live.

The first part of the book contains the instructions on how to pray the Rosary, as I would expect in any Rosary book. It is after that that this book differs from most of the other small Rosary guides. Each Mystery is introduced with an appropriate Biblical passage (The Annunciation is introduced by Luke 1:35) and closed with a prayer by Caryll Houselander that reflects the nature and spirit of that Mystery.

A fine way to enrich your study of the Rosary, or to add more thoughts and meditations on the Holy Mysteries. If you want to deepen your spiritual approach to the Rosary, this book will be a loved addition to your library. The book is small enough to be included in almost anyone's luggage, or even in a large pocket, bag, or purse, and can therefore be taken along as a pocket resource on the Rosary and the relevent Biblical passages. Since I occasionally make gemstone Rosaries, I am often asked to recommend a book, and have found this book to be an excellent accompaniment to the gift of a Rosary.

If you are looking for more information about the history of the Rosary instead, then I suggest "Stories of the Rose" or any of the other fine books on the Rosary's history and practice, as this small book does not cover historical practice.

If you are thinking about buying a dog (it explains puppy mills, contracts to consider when you buy a dog and licensing laws); you already have a dog (laws you might want to consider even if you're sure your dog is always well-behaved and how to get dog insurance); you want to provide for your dog after your death (what may or may not work in your will); you hate your neighbor's dog's barking (how to talk to your neighbor or seek mediation, or your liability if you are cruel or provoke the dog) or if you suspect your neighbor's dog is mistreated or are in any other way concerned about dogs: YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. There is much more covered than what I have put here.

I expected to read a few key chapters, but ended up reading it cover to cover. It contains interesting facts throughout (have you ever thought about the number of dogs injured/killed by riding in the back of a pick-up truck?), history of dog laws, real cases and the rulings in those cases (though obviously missing the recent case of Ms. Whipple's murder); and sound, common-sense advice whether it is written in the law or not.

For the sake of the dogs and the people who own or are around them, I hope everybody will read this book.

Now in a revised and updated 4th edition, Dog Law is a straightforward and comprehensive legal guide for dog owners -- and the neighbors of dog owners. Dog Law explains, in plan English terms easily accessible to the lay person, what the laws mandates with regard to barking dogs, dangerous dogs, cruelty to animals, dog bites, if a dog is injured or killed, and much more. Dog Law is a superbly presented, user friendly reference, and a "must" for dog owners, as well as for anyone else who might have a legal bone to pick!

Informative, easy to read.

Dog law is another outstanding legal book by Nolo press. I got the book because I was having problems with my neighbor's five barking dogs. I wanted to be informed of my rights before I confronted my neighbor. Although I had no luck coming to a compromise with my neighbor regarding the dogs (he is a crazy, paranoid, drug-addicted redneck), it was empowering to know my rights. The only small complaint was that it did not include state laws, but that may be beyond the scope of this book.

An excellent source of legal information for dog owners!

I bought this book (Dog Law) years ago since I am a dog owner who would like to be aware of my rights and the rights of my dogs. Dog Law, By Mary Randolph is now in it's third publication, and I highly recommend it to all dog owners. Not only does the author focus on simple leash laws, barking cases, landlord restrictions, traveling with your dog, etc., but the author also focuses on criminal abuse cases and acts as a referral contact if you need help in the legal process yourself with a dog legal situation.

I had never heard of Mussar until recently. I am a Jew and have been practicing Buddhism for the last 25 years. Mussar ties Jewish thought, Talmudic and Biblical in origin, with concepts like generosity, loving-kindness and other principles that are common to Buddhism.
This book is outlined in a way that offers daily readings and you could just keep starting over each time you finish. I read from it after i finish my morning meditation session. This book has provided me with a spiritual part of Judaism that had been difficult to connect with prior to reading it.
I can't say that it has changed my life, but it has added to it something essential and beneficial for me and ultimately for all sentient beings. Thanks to Alan Morinis for writing it.

Mussar is a Jewish ethical practice that involves self-examination leading to self-improvement. The practice is positive in nature and outward focussed though it involves a certain amount of introspection as well.

Everyday Holiness is well laid out in three sections. Part one explains what Mussar is and gives something of its history. Part two describes eighteen middot (character traits) including how they impact on our lives and steps we might take to improve the balance of that particular quality in our personalities. Part three describes Mussar practice, including daily, weekly and annual activities.

I found the book wonderfully clear and relevant for today. It would be quite possible to launch into Mussar with just this book as a guide.

An excellent presentation of Mussar...

This book is an excellent presentation of Mussar, by one of today's premier Mussar teachers in the US/Canada. The author is not Orthodox, and doesn't pretend to be. His own Mussar teacher is Orthodox, and approved of this author's teaching of Mussar to the larger community of both Orthodox and other Jews as well as non-Jews. The material is easy to understand and easy to put into practice. The author teaches Mussar as it was meant to be practiced, with kindness as well as consciousness. If you are the least interested in Mussar, and not interested in a practice to beat yourself over the head with, this is the book you've been looking for. I bought copies for friends along with my own.
