This book is really well structured and easy to read, a relief considering the complex and legal nature of the issues. Mr. Neal starts with the basics and eases into the more difficult subjects in an understandable way that really brings them to life. If you have had any type of credit issues, as I have, this book will really open your eyes. You will also find that the author offers extremely clear and practical instructions on resolving your problems. And if you have ever had to deal with a collector, this book will leave you feeling absolutely empowered. I recommend it highly.

A Reluctant Review by the AuthorReview Date: 2008-01-10
Long story short, my therapy "did the trick" and I finally got my life back. As part of my therapy, I decided to embark on a much-needed catharsis, which was accomplished through writing what I believed would always remain for "my eyes only." After trusted friends read the manuscript, they encouraged me to pursue publishing, which I did, and the rest is history. Now that my work is in print, my hope is that readers will find hope and encouragement when faced with storms along life's journey. To borrow a quote from the author, "I have learned that without the storms of life there can be no rainbows." Rainbows do await the storm-tossed traveler; yours may be just beyond the next storm cloud.
If you read the book and are encouraged in any way, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached by email at hurricanerainbow@aol.com. Please visit my website at: www.hurricanesandrainbows.com. God bless you on your way--Mark

The best book on distressed debt analysisReview Date: 2008-07-02
In my opinion, this book is the best book written on the subject.
Very practical guide to distressed debt analysis; very structured, easy to read, great overview of potential legal issues. Helps a reader to develop a right mindset for distressed debt investing.
The only "How To" book on the subject you need.Review Date: 2008-01-01
All bases are covered, from legal proceedings, financial statement analysis, to market micro-structure.
This is not a suitable book for retail investors, unless the issue happens to be very large and liquid (e.g. Calpine debt in 12/'07). This text is directed primarily at institutional investors, so know this before you buy.
Other subjects are covered such as "loan to own", etc.
A winner.

Great & Comprehensive Practical ReviewReview Date: 2007-01-04
Some other books on the topic go into significantly more detail in esoteric issues; however this book is a must for a grounded detailed understanding of the topic. I have recommended this book to a number of colleagues in the industry and all were equally appreciative.

Peter Drucker type writing style - easy to read, valuable information with key management points expressed succinctlyReview Date: 2006-01-13
The author writes in a style similar to Peter Drucker, one of my favorite business writers. He expresses valuable key management points in a succinct, easy to understand way.
The author brings his vast consulting experience together to very effectively relate to the issues that Delta faced. His perspective is how Delta's leaders - 7 CEOs and their Board - dealt with those issues and the leadership lessons we can all learn from the decisions of those leaders.
From this leadership perspective, he chronicles the company history, starting with C.E. Woolman, founder of Delta and a great leader during the company's early decades. Nolan then graphically shows how the roots and a culture that caused a growing company to flourish and thrive were damaged or abandoned by later leaders, ultimately leading Delta into bankruptcy.
The points made regarding the agenda of some management consultants are right on target. They deserve serious consideration by any CEO, Board or executive.
The book is a valuable, textbook case study in how a great company can go awry when the leaders lose focus and depart from the values and culture that made it great.

Schier is a master storytellerReview Date: 2007-09-08
This was the case when I read The Outer Whorl by Neal A. Schier.
Schier is a master storyteller and wrote the book from the perspective of a pilot for a major airline; but, instead of a biography of I did this and I did that, he writes as if his only purpose was to bring the reader along with him.
The text revolves around airplanes and pilots, but the real story is about people and their interpretations of the world around them. The author displays a great respect for all individuals, even those who fall below the bar.
The author sees airplane pilots through a prism rare in other books. He sees piloting as a craft to be practiced and honed to perfection. One story, in particular, sticks with me. It involves a modern passenger airliner recently in a serious situation over South America. Instead of trying to explain the jetliners' electrical system and its malfunction, he concentrates instead on the philosophical problem facing the Captain, reminiscent of the great stories of the sea. My favorite lines in the book are in this story:
"Time and fate were playing a cat-and-mouse game on this flight...The cat-and-mouse game did not last long though. The mask of supposed civility that cruel reality often wears was dropped, and the crew was facing the ugly prospect of having an electrical fire on board".
The book is a compelling read. Rather than a beginning, middle, and end, it is written as a series of essays. Each could stand alone, but each ties with a common thread to the others. It is an interesting way to deal with an author's lifetime of experiences and observations.
Both pilots and non-pilots are sometimes reluctant to approach a book with aviation as its theme. The pilot fears it will be too simplistic and forget to address the mundane every-day, every-week, every-month aspects as boredom and fatigue. The non-pilot fears being left behind by endless technical descriptions and weather report hieroglyphics and arcane formulae.
In The Outer Whorl, Neal A. Schier has written a book that deftly works around the reading fears of both the pilot and non-pilot. I highly recommend this book and suspect that at the end you'll wish there was some more.

Great ReadReview Date: 2007-08-24
I highly recommend it. It is a very good read. It consists of a series of short essays of our beloved profession (I just recently retired from one of the Major's) that covers multiple topics such as bankruptcy, leadership and the more lighter moments on the line.
Normally I have found books written by our fellow pilots to be, well, less than great. But Captain Schier's book is not only great, it well thought out and is a must read for all.
I'm an avid reader. I guess you could say I have a case of abiblicaphobia (made up word, but it fits) or the fear of being on public transportation (I commuted from Boston to Chicago) or in a hotel room without reading material (magazines don't count). In fact, I guess you could say I have an acute case of it because I ALWAYS carried a spare book (or 2 or 3) with me on all my trips just in case I finished the one I was reading. My tastes run from mind candy fiction to more serious history/biography type of material. I place The Outer Whorl under the 2nd category.
I enjoyed this book immensely. The essay/short story format was perfect. Little snippets of flying experience that seemed to all flow together. I only wish I could write as well as that.
One chapter touches on the hijacking of a Lufthansa airliner some years back. Capt Schier discusses an interview with a woman who thought less of her husband (both were hostages) because of the incident. Mind boggling to say the least. Thank you Captain Schier.

Excellent Primer on BankruptcyReview Date: 2007-07-21
To offer some unsolicited advice to law students, I don't recommend using this or any supplementary texts in your courses. Stick with the casebook and other materials the instructor assigns. It may seem as if this requires more effort to learn the subject than is warranted, but you won't regret it. You'll never have the time once you start working to reread and think about cases that you have while in school. That 3 years may seem like a long time, but if you take it seriously you will benefit significantly throughout your career. It is surprising how often I encounter exprienced lawyers who are ignorant of matters I learned in law school (now long past) and still remember.

Finally, an understandable bankruptcy book!Review Date: 2003-08-22
Personal Bankruptcy for Dummies is, first and foremost, a very useful tool for anyone even thinking about bankruptcy. It answers all the questions without preaching or browbeating. It ought to be read by every potential bankruptcy client before they meet with a lawyer.
Indispensable primer for anyone considering bankruptcyReview Date: 2004-02-06
This is not a DIY guide to financial rebirth (in fact the authors highly discourage this), but more of an "Everything-You-Ever-Wanted-to-Know-About-Bankruptcy-but-Were-Afraid-to-Ask" reference. The authors do not delve into the minutia of the process. They seek to be more like tour guides, leading you through the perilous wilds of US bankruptcy law with their collective wealth of knowledge on the subject. I found more useful information in the first 10 pages of this book than I did in six hours of web-surfing.
The most superlative compliment I can bestow upon this volume is that it helped to allay my fears and crystalize my plans for my financial future.
