I love the Mossy Creek series. The different writers add wonderful flavor and life to the town which keeps this very fun. In this installment we see some significant changes in relationships betweeen our main town characters which I'm not sure I agree with but still enjoy the read. Makes me anxious for the next to see how it works out. If you have not read any in this series, this is not the book to begin with. You really should start from the first. Trust me, you will be hooked and looking for your own Mossy Creek.

This is a great series of books recommended to me by a friend. I ordered them all, used & new, and received them all in a timely manner. You get to know these people in the stories and think of them as friends, or most of them anyway! I could not put them down and as soon as I finished one I picked up the next one immediately. Enjoy

I am not even in the music business. I purchased this book to support Jawar and to the book give to someone else who needed it. Not only did I get stuck reading the book and jotting down information and contacts that I may need later, but the person I gave the book to loved it. It is full of music resources, contacts, links, referals, etc... I am glad I purchased this book. I am now online at amazon.com getting ready to purchase another one for my mother. Ho-tep, Jawar!

We bought Roger's Book for FL lighthouses and used it as the basis for a tour of all of FL's lighthouses and now we plan the same with this book. His pictures are so nice and his easy, friendly and informative writing style is enjoyable. We really enjoy the insight he adds to the history of each lighthouse. We are looking forward to our next trip with this book as our guide.

Bansemer's Book Of Carolina And Georgia Lighthouse showcases the great lighthouses that served the maritime trade for generations along the Carolina and Georgia coastlines. Roger Bansemer's informative text is superbly enhanced by his wonderful paintings. Most of these grand structures are no longer in service, having been rendered obsolete by advances in maritime and communications technologies. But their legacy lives on as proud relics of a maritime history that continues to hold a fascination for each new generation. Superbly produced and presented, Bansemer's Book Of Carolina And Georgia Lighthouse is a very highly recommended addition to any light house enthusiast's collection.

Brilliant Look at Civil Religion in the South

Charles Reagan Wilson's work brilliantly describes the civil religion (as described by Geertz) of the "Lost Cause" that was pervasive in the Reconstruction and Early Modern South.
Wilson argues that this civil religion was a combination of Christian and Confederate symbols. According to Wilson this civil religion was formed out of Confederate ministers attempts to reconcile defeat in the war with the Will of God and (as the ministers believed) Confederate righteousness.
Significant in this study is Wilson's look at the role that White Supremacy played in this civil religion. He looks extensively at the role of racism as embodied in groups such as the KKK.
All in all, the work is a brilliant look at ideas pervasive in the reconstruction and early modern south, ideas which have been influential in formation of the modern New South.

Wilson's Baptized in Blood is a brilliant book, one of which I was required to read for a graduate history course on religion in the American south. Although I was born and grew up in the south, I nevertheless was a foreigner there. There was much in the psychology of southerners which made no sense to me. Reading Baptized in Blood was an extraordinary eye-opener! Though I am yet and always will be a stranger in the land of my birth, through the cogent narrative Wilson provides, I understand more deeply now the mythic, psychological origins of the many peculiar and bizarre thoughts, feelings and behaviours of southerners. Southerners REALLY and TRULY BELIEVED that GOD was on their side, in the prosecution of the civil war, and have had to reconcile their defeat as best they could. The inability to let go of that loss goes far in making southerners what they are.
Baptized in Blood is well worth the reading of anyone who seeks to understand the post-civil war period, and/or the social and political psychology of the American south.

This book discusses the theological basis of southern slave society. Anyone who questions the religious self-righteousness of the southerners should read this book because it highlights the contradictions inherent in the hateful southern society and the teachings of Jesus Christ. I have acquired a much greater understanding of the history of the religious right, and, being a southern black trying to understand the hatred around which I live, this book enlightens my perspective.

I want to let readers know this is a truly must read for all ages. Pre-teens, teens, young adults and adults alike will gain truth and insight into themselves; reminding them that freedom is not free. Having not heard of this author before, I can honestly say this writer has heart and wants to reach his readers on many levels. I cannot say enough good things and what a wonderful feeling I walked away with after reading it. My hope is this is not a one-hit wonder. If you like the work of Nicholas Sparks or Nicholas Evans, you'll enjoy the likes of David Dudley even more!

An excellent read from start to finish. It is wonderful to see an author who takes the time to develop characters and drive the plot without offering two-bit explanations and inch-deep resolutions to conflict. Dudley does not try to solve all of Carissa's problems, and presents good lessons on life's hardships and the need to know what is worth fighting for. A solid work for all ages, especially for young people developing their sense of moral character and integrity. Highly reccommended.

Having moved to a small rural community when I was young from a larger city, I was really able to identify with Carissa and her difficulties fitting in and making friends. A wonderful example of when to stand up for yourself and also when to move on and not let people drag you down to their level. I enjoyed the interactions of the characters and the glimpse into hardships of the time period. I'm looking forward to other books by the author!

This is another great book from Bill Roorbach adding to his SUMMERS WITH JULIET and WRITING LIFE STORIES. Roorbach writes with masculine vigor without being macho. His empathy for the elderly equals his concern for normal people with lonely hearts. He is a romantic through and through. After reading BIG BEND, you want to read everything this brilliant and sympathetic author puts out. Read this and watch for more.

I read this wonderful collection of stories with a sense of absolute delight. Bill Roorbach knows the secret desires in the hearts of all his befuddled, passionate men. In "Fog," he enters the world of a boy's first romantic love and makes it surprising and new, erotic and terrifying, thrilling and funny: "Then she wanted to know how it felt and I wanted to know how she felt and we said tingling and bursting, the same for both of us, almost hurtful, and she said, 'Love you.' Which I tried to say, too, but it came out just like the vowel sounds in English class." The remarkable "Taughannock Falls" has the sweep and complexity of a full novel, though it fills only thirteen pages. Two middle-aged men, estranged since one married the other's girlfriend twenty years earlier, re-enter each other's lives under extraordinary circumstances: Stephen has fallen into a mysterious catatonic state, and Bob believes he might be the only one with enough knowledge, love, anger, and desire to pull him out again. "Not a movement from my old friend. Not a blink of the eye, not a nod of the head, not a tear on the cheek, not a tap of the foot, not a twitch of the lip. He looks tremendous--healthy and wise, clean and brave, courteous and kind." When Stephen finally snaps open, he is a bursting boy, delivered not into the present, not into his handsome, forty-five-year-old body--but tossed backward into the life he left in his twenties, into a time when no love surpasses the manic joy he feels with his friend "Bobbo." What amazes me about all the stories in this collection is Bill Roorbach's vision of grace. There's a fast heat on the surface of every tale, a love of language that is playful and exact. The levity, the crisp dialogue, the sharp sting of interior revelation, all serve as counterpoints to quiet explorations of mercy and forgiveness, tenderness and compassion. The title piece is a tour de force that pushes Bill Roorbach's enormous talents as a storyteller to their limits. Dennis Hunter--wealthy, widowed, seventy-four years old and still bound by love to his wife Betty--is an unlikely candidate for a job with the United States Forest Service that pays just above minimum wage. And he's an even more unlikely candidate for a troubling, giddy, unavoidable attachment to a married woman in her forties who watches birds and weighs as much as he does. But Mr. Roorbach is a writer who knows and celebrates love at every age, in every marvelous incarnation. These two will swim the River of Ghosts to make love in Mexico where Martha believes she won't be breaking a parting promise to her husband, a vow "not to mess around with any man in Texas." This isn't an easy moment physically or spritually, and Dennis Hunter, besieged by desire, never lets us forget the moral complexities, the fear, or the wonder. "She was forty-seven and married and standing waist deep and naked in the Rio Grande not twenty feet from Mexico. Dennis felt her gaze . . . and followed Martha, climbed in the river after her . . . he was being swept away in the current, pictured himself washed up on a flat rock dead and naked miles downstream. But Martha got hold of his hand laughing and they stood waist deep together in the stream rushing past, silty, sweetly warm water." This collection is pure pleasure for all the senses, a balm for the spirit, an immersion in a world where passion is the greatest risk and love the only certain path to rapture and redemption.
