Engrossing study of a little-known event in American wartime
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-08
Completely fascinating. Most Americans don't even know we had hundreds of camps all over the U.S. that housed German POWs. We study all the heros and villains of the war in broad terms, and tend to forget that there were thousands of little events that to the people involved were every bit as important as the publicized events. The U.S. Army executed a group of Germans who did what the American Army itself would have expected of its soldiers, and hushed up if American POWs did exactly the same thing. This is a frightening study of how the military bureaucracy is a law unto its own purposes. "The Killing of Corporal Kunz" and "Extreme Justice" are further fascinating looks at the same kind of situation.

A conflict between honor and the fight against tyranny.

Martial Justice: The Last Mass Execution in the United States is a compelling account of a conflict between honor and the fight against tyranny. A historical tragedy of German Submariner POW Werner Drechsler who was willing to sacrifice the bond of comradeship to save his homeland. On the other side, seven fellow German Submariner POWs who see Drechsler as a traitor. The actions taken by the seven leads them down a twisted wartime legal path that ends with their execution after the surrender of Germany. The book examines the strong bonds of loyalty shared amongst these young men. A close-knit fraternity which became stronger through adversity. The many questions left unanswered by history begs the reader to examine the tarnished legacy left behind by the prisoner of war experience in the United States.

Addictive!

Captivating, I couldn't put it down. Very well researched and extremely well written and easy to read. Any student of the U-boat was would do well to read this sad chapter in the history of the Ubootwaffe. It really gets into the mindset of the crews. Human nature is a fascinating beast and Martial Justice is a great study in the good and bad in us all.

As someone who deals with variety of International tax issues on daily basis, I often refer to this book as a refresher on the basics. The book is not very deep technically, but the examples used and materials covered makes it a must-have on my desk at all times. I'm about the upgrade it to the next edition.

Easy to follow. It doesn't get into extremely technical tax planning, but it explains high-level transactions at a level non-international tax professionals should be able to follow.

This is a great book for a new professional starting their own office. It steps you through all the different types of business structures for professionals and the tax treat of each, in minute detail. Really great book, we're using it to start a law office. The same author has written another great book, Deduct it! Lower your Small Business Taxes. While it is also a great book, I would suggest that you NOT purchase both books. A lot of large sections of text are identical between the two books. For professionals, I'd just go with this one and skip Deduct It!

TAX-FREE SWAPS by Brad Borden

Readable - Informative - Enjoyable - Interesting.
a most valuable and exceptionally well organized work.

I have been involved with 1031 exchanges for over 43 years and this is the first work that treats the subject in the proper manner it deserves.. It is most accessible for the reader who needs to and should be informed about this often mis-characterized section 1031 of the IRS code. I just wish more of my clients would read it. It is certainly a must read for every Realtor, CPA, attorney and Qualified Intermediary wanting to explain 1031exchanges to their clients.

Tax-Free Swaps: Using Section 1031 Like-Kind Exchanges to Preserve Investment Net Worth (Nuts & Bolts series) (Nuts & Bolts series)

TAX FREE SWAPS
This is the book to add to your library whether you're a property owner or practitioner.

"Tax free Swaps" by Bradley T. Borden is, first, well written: the highly technical tax language of 1031 exchanges is made understandable. The tax consequences 1031 exchanges are presented in logical order, from the history of tax deferred exchanges to current practices. Between the table of contents and the index, it's easy to find a topic of interest. The coupe de grace is Mr. Borden's use of "conversations" with clients to illustrate the concepts. I've used/tried many sources to research Tax Free Swaps and Mr. Borden brings it all together in these 290 pages. Appendix D, Additional Section 1031 Resources, alone is worth the price of the book.

A Casebook that Actually Teaches
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-08
Law students now have free or inexpensive access to online services offering cases and supporting documents. Big 100+ dollar leather-bound casebooks might as well go extinct (though the old-timers would never allow it) unless they can add some actual teaching to their reprints of information that is easily available elsewhere. This particular book is one of the few dealing with the esoteric subject of telecommunications law and policy, and the price is almost worth it because the authors actually seem to care whether students learn the deeper nuances of the topic, rather than just expecting you analyze case after case after case with no in-depth education on legal reasoning or the latest trends in industry.

In this book the cases are actually fairly rare and are supplemented fully with government agency documents from which new rules and laws are formulated (crucial background info that is rare to nonexistent in standard casebooks) and law review articles by experts in the telecommunications field, giving the student a robust non-judicial understanding of the factors involved in recent court decisions and government regulatory strategies. The subject matter is also comprehensive and presented in an order that makes sense and efficiently uses the space available. The key to this book's success are the frequent notes and questions that appear after cases, helping the student actually think about the dry legalese they just got finished reading (though the rhetorical "what if?" questions do get out of hand at times). Overall, this is a law school casebook that actually synthesizes the information presented in a way that helps the student, and not just a publisher whose idea of education is to charge monstrous prices for a never-ending list of reprinted cases. This book introduces basic concepts about how the government regulates broadcast television, radio, cable, telephone, and Internet service. It includes easy-to-read discussions and also excerpts of important documents and cases.

The book was written for use in law school classes, but it would be valuable to practicing attorneys as well as to managers at major telecommunications firms, especially those working to understand the Telecommunications Act of 1996.

Benjamin, Lichtman, and Shelanski have written an excellent book on U.S. telecommunications law. The book provides a glimpse at the early history of U.S. radio telecommunications and brings the reader up to fairly recent developments. Explanations of the spectrum, arguments of why broadcast media have been regulated (children's tv, indecency, Fairness Doctrine, for example), selected court cases and FCC actions are provided. "Notes and questions" are provided at the end of segments within each chapter and help the reader anticipate issues addressed subsequently. The book is well written and the authors have an enjoyable sense of humor. While the book does give attention to the Internet, readers might want to supplement the book's coverage by reading Sharon Black's "Telecommunications Law in the Internet Age" published in 2002 by Morgan Kaufmann Publishers.

Universal Service: Competition, Interconnection, and Monopoly in the Making of the American Telephone System (AEI Studies in Telecommunications Deregulation)

An Excellent Book

Review Date: 2006-09-26
An excellent book that explores the myth of telecommunications policy. A problem in telecommunications policy is that the regulatory approaches have been sufficiently long lived that those who regulate today were not around when the regulatory policy was established. We have lived so long with regulatory approach that we have lost site of regulatory policy. As we today address, should a VoIP phone be regulated like a Verizon POTS phone, the answer is normally "Yes" because "like things should be regulated the same." This articulates a regulatory approach devoid of comprehension as to why a Verizon POTS phone was ever regulated in the first place. Milton Mueller takes us there and explores through his dissection of Universal Service what first brought about these policies, who sought them, and what gain they thought might be achieved through regulation. Today's universal service (98% of all americans have phones) is a grand achievement, but it is a far cry from what AT&T meant by "universal service" in 1908.

Extraordinary

Review Date: 2000-04-18
In this crisply written mix of history and clear theory, Mueller retells the history of early competition in telephony -- and of the role of regulation in making the AT&T monopoly. The book brings to life a completely forgotten period, where telephones were like computer operating systems today -- competing yet incompatible. Not every phone could be called from every phone, and this fact, Mueller convincingly argues, pushed competition in telephone penetration.

The book also is convincing in its account of the reconstruction of the meaning of the word "universal service" which was brought about, Mueller argues, by AT&T revisionism in the 1970s. The original meaning was simply that any phone would be able to call any phone; the modern meaning (that some service subsidizes other service) was a construction of a late monopoly trying to defend itself.

The book suggests wonderful (if under developed) parallels with the story of competition in modern operating systems. And it offers some important skepticism about the 1996 Telecommunications Act.

Must reading in telecommunications policy

A fascinating account of telephone competition in the early 1900s, when the competing telephone systems did not connect. Mueller's analysis of the experience of a fragmented telecommunications infrastructure--and the decision to put an end to it in the name of "universal service"--has important implications for Internet and telecom development today. Scott offers very practical, concise and organized guidebook which I wish I had from day 1...This book focuses on necessary and predictible situations: what needs to be done, when it should be done and who should do it. It defines the terminology simply. The writing is clear and comprehensible. This book is so important for someone newly experiencing the operational side of death, that I purchased multiple copies for my fellow mourners.

This book is both simple and practical. When someone close to you dies, worrying about all the details of what to do next can be overwhelming. Many people are too distraught to deal with potentially complex legal and financial issues. This book provides an easy step-by-step approach to the whole process, and doesn't overwhelm the reader with too much detail.

This book is gold. I have bought several books trying to get a clear and concise handle on what is involved in making my business legal. They all bogged me down with things I didn't understand or was left with more questions. Until this book. Richard Stim starts right off with no bull. He states in layman terms what decisions need to made first and moves right on down the line. He gives clear examples of do's and don'ts and always gives references online for further exploration. He also suggests, when necessary, to check with an attorney and what legal forms you can do yourself and what forms can be adjusted. This book comes with a CD of legal forms, so there is no hunting them or tracking down the right offices at the court house. Richard Stim takes a lot of the mystery away and makes you feel confident. I highly recommend this book for anyone!

This book is a pleasure to get through and does an excellent job assessing the current state of tax reform. His competitive tax plan makes quite a bit of sense too. Shifting a good portion of federal revenue to a VAT takes over 150 million individuals off the IRS rolls and simplifies the entire system. I worry that the implementation process would be too complicated to reap the benefits of the simpler system, and that this plan lacks the proper advocates in Congress, but that does not mean you shouldn't read this book and understand his plan. The VAT is a tried and true system throughout the EU, and could help the US in numerous ways.

Tax Policy Made Interesting

Review Date: 2008-01-18
Michael Graetz makes tax policy almost enjoyable. Graetz never forgets that the tax system's primary purpose is to raise the money needed to finance the government services that the nation wants in the least harmful way. Or, as the French economist Colbert put it, "The art of taxation consists in so plucking the goose as to obtain the largest possible amount of feathers with the smallest possible amount of hissing." Graetz provides a realistic assessment of our current tax structure and deftly identifies the failings of faddish proposals, such as the "fair tax" and the "flat tax." His proposal to reduce the number of people required to pay income tax and to add a value-added tax to our nation's fiscal arsenal deserves serious consideration by conservatives and liberals alike.
