As an advisor working with donors, this book is invaluable. It has information on where ethical issues may be, checklists on what governing documents should include and plenty of text to describe the different tools available for estate and gift planning. Ms Miree covers complex concepts with numerous examples. After reading this book, I feel confident to represent the donor while doing the preliminary work with the development directors of charities and private foundations and attorneys.

Great reference guide - a must have!

Review Date: 2000-06-15
I work for a Southern California-based property management firm/home builder and we have been looking for a property tax guide for awhile now. I've attended property tax seminars and have not been able to find a good comprehensive guide to help me through my various questions on the subject. Most property tax manuals, I have found, are filled with the complex California tax code or are too broad in their attempt to cover the large area of property tax. With the Property Tax California Style reference book, I believe we have found what we have been looking for.

James Bone, the author, apparently wrote this book with the non-property tax professional in mind. The chapters are laid out in an easy to understand format. The sections covering the various areas are explained very well. For example, we specifically wanted to find out what type of property tax exemptions exist in California and by quickly looking in the table of contents, we found the chapter covering the area.

For a non-property tax professional this book covers all areas of property tax from real estate base year calculations to personal property tax issues. The book can also be useful as a quick reference guide for a property tax professional who wants to polish up on a specific area that they are not too familiar with. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about property taxes in California.

This work clearly and concisely emphasizes the salient points of the proposed regulations. However, true notional principal contract enthusiasts will want to check out Mr. Shapiro's more ambitious work -- Taxation of Equity Derivatives, Tax Management Portfolio No. 188.

Everything You Wanted to Know about Wills
Helpful Votes: 31 out of 34 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-22
When I've gone to lawyers to have paperwork done such as wills, I've had the idea that they have a standard form in their word processing system. First they talk to you (at $100+ per hour) and ask you a bunch of questions. I think your answers are used to fill in the blanks in their word processing system.

Now there are computer programs like this one that take a particular area of the law and produce the forms you need. This one is obviously oriented to wills (duh, look at the name), it includes legal wills, living trusts, health care directives (living wills) powers of attorney, final arrangements documents, and forms for executors. Because it is a commercial product, it has been produced to the highest possible standards (for fear of law suits).

Note: Do not use this product in Louisiana which bases its legal system on the Napoleanic code rather than English Common Law.

The book gives a plausable and reasonable understanding which led to the Constitution. This is much more in keeping with the narrative of history than a more simplistic merchant vs. farmer approach in disucssion of the post-revolutionary period.

It is certainly very different from today where the rich seem determined to avoid taxation - even to the sacrifice of the national stability.

The rapidly increasing appreciation of regulation
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-20
Professor Beesley and the Institute of Economic Affairs, a free market think tank in London, England, have done the world a great service in instituting the annual series of lectures hosted by the London Business School on the subject of regulation in all of it's aspects.

Sadly Michael Beesley is no longer with us and the academic world is much poorer by his passing. However, the lecture series lives on and the most recent edition of the papers will be with us later on in the year.

The papers of the proceedings are a barometer reflecting the changes that are occurring in the field of regulation, here mainly concerned with the regulation of the so-called utilities. Each year the series mirrors the broadening concerns of regulation as it moves out into the wider world. The presentations deal with developments in utility regulation and their general applicability.

In this volume, IEA Readings 46, the papers look at the broader issues of utility regulation in the light of certain changes which occurred in the period following on from the previous year's lectures. A change in government following the fall of the last of the Conservative governments to hold power since 1979 was clearly a concern for the organisers and participants at the lectures and their concerns were met head on in a paper by David Currie. Growing awareness of the conflict inherent in the British approach to regulatory policy vis a vis the European approach is also considered. Another major theme is the process of introducing competition into the utility industries and the impact on the regulators.

Highlights of the volume for me were the paper by Currie on Labour's view, Colin Robinson's excellent paper on introducing competition into the water industry and Michael Beesley's masterful consideration of the role of subsidy in the privatisation of the rail industry.

An excellent book in total with a very high standard in the quality of the papers, both technically and readability. The authors are to be commended on their sterling efforts to make complex subject matter accessible to the general audience.

At my company, we have found Russia's tax and regulatory rules to be complex. This report is very helpful in navigating these rules to avoid tax traps and make the most of investments.

The book is well-organized and well-written. I recommend it highly to anyone with responsibility for business operations in Russia.
