I use this book often in my practice. It was recommended to me by a fellow colleague who heard the author speak at a conference. So far, with this book, I have settled with the USAtty office concerning an asset forfeiture for a client. I also used it to negotiate an offer in compromise that was accepted by the IRS Appeals in an employment case in a case that the agent could not be persuaded to settle.

This book is a great guide for analyzing and determining strategies to take against the government. It's great not to have to reinvent the wheel by using the checklists and deposition questions and form complaints etc that are provided in this book as a guide. It is a book I refer to regularly in my practice and I have given it to new associates in our trial training program.

I bought this book after hearing the author speak at a bar conference. I was impressed. She really knew what she was talking about and she provided actual substantive materials as handouts not just outlines that you normally get from presenters. If your specializing in tax defense, this is a must-purchase. Forms, phone numbers, law and practical advice for dealing with the government are included in this book for the bread& butter types cases most tax lawyers handle.

I bought this book when I was involved in a tax clinic & law school class two years ago and now that I'm out in my own practice I find that it is one of the few books I can actually use in my practice. It has forms, pleadings and advice concerning IRS and DOJ practice and procedures that have saved me from spinning my wheels. I recommend this for others who represent clients during audits, appeals with the IRS and handle refund suits involving the Justice Department.

The Payroll Source is the best payroll book available in the market today. I use it for reference material almost every day. Practically every payroll issue is covered and if you need to see the IRS regs involved, just look at the bottom of the page. What could be more efficient? Try it. You will be thrilled. How did you ever live without it?

Excellent Summary of RE Tax Strategies
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-27
I purchased the book to plan my tax strategy when selling an investment property that incurred significant gain. The sections on CRUTs, Installment Sales, and 1031 Tax Free Exchanges were very helpful and thorough. It is somewhat technical information, but written in a manner that a layman (non-CPA) can understand. My only complaint is that he doesn't address the implications of the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) anywhere in the book, and it has become a VERY significant consideration for selling highly appreciated property. The other thing I noticed is that his evaluation of TIC 1031 Exchanges covers some of the risks, but neglects to mention that the vast majority of 1031 TICs include HUGE fees or loads. One I examined had a 20% profit to the sales company when the property was flipped to the 1031 investors. Most have 8% - 12% commissions to the salesman. Otherwise, I thought this was an extremely helpful book and I would recommend it...with the caveat that the reader get additional advice on the AMT.

Understanding the tax implications of your investments is one of the most important things you can do as a current, or aspiring real estate investor. While Mr. Williamson's book will not make you a "tax expert" it will give you the foundational knowledge you will need in order to intelligently converse with your attorney/accountant, and to make wise investing decisions.

Chapters include information on: capital gains, tax basis, exclusions, exchanges, installment sales, and trusts. I have personally given this book to new agents in my company in order to familiarize them with the tax implications of real estate investing.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I should say that I am an attorney, real estate broker, investor, trainer, and author of another unique and highly readable book on real estate investing that can also be found here on Amazon -- The WealthLoop Series Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Buying Houses: The Foolproof Roadmap to Real Estate Riches Without the Risks and Hassles of Landlording. Unlike many real estate investing books, it is written to be a genuine "How To" book that "takes you by the hand" and walks you through a step-by-step process for getting started in real estate investing -- investors across the country are giving it rave reviews. The book also includes sample leases, forms, and checklists, so that you can actually go out and implement the investing strategy it teaches as soon as you're done reading. You might want to check out the companion CD too -- The WealthLoop Series Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Buying Houses (Combo Audio/Data CD): Author's Audio Commentary Plus Downloadable 32-page Marketing Manual, Checklists, Spreadsheets, and Forms.

A related program that's well worth checking out is:

The WealthLoop Series Beginner's Guide to Personal Wealth Creation (Combo Audio/Data CD): Audio Seminar With Downloadable 40-Page Action Manual and Active Link Library.

I believe that Williamson has written an informative book that's worthy of your time. Buy it if you are serious about making a success of real estate investing.

I have read a number of books about real estate tax planning, and this is by far the best. It is clear, to the point, and very readable. The author goes through the basics of how a capital gains basis is calculated, rules about stepping up basis, primary residence exclusion rules, etc. He then discusses various ways of deferring or eliminating capital gain consequences via 1031, installment sales, private annuity trusts, charitable remainder trusts and Roth IRAs. The chapter on private annuity trusts is one of the least known, yet most valuable strategies that exists. Buy this book!

If you've been reading your partnership tax textbook scratching your head and wondering where they got this number or that number, this book will be an immense help as you go through the rules and try to understand them. The Logic of Subchapter K goes through the subject matter in a very organized and well-presented fashion that makes it much easier to tackle. I am currently an L.L.M. student in Taxation, and I've found that, in combination with a textbook and lectures, this book makes it possible to not just memorize the rules but to actually understand and be able to apply them. Great book.

This is an excellent, excellent book! I am law school student struggling my way through partnership tax (with no desire to practice tax law). I have purchased everything under the sun that I thought might give me a better understanding of the subject. This is the first book that I have come accross that really helped. It gives you the "why?" behind the mechanics. I cannot imagine why my professor recommended the Nutshell book as opposed to this book. I cannot recommend it enough!

UPDATE - I got an A in the class and I am positive it was due to this book.

simple and clean, rather go through all of the sites to search what you actually need to register your company, this book guide you through that. also, book v.s. web sites, the book gives you more insight to cross comparison on all the legal structures that you need to choose, pros and cons, to make you select what fits you, instead of reading laws on the web only tell you what is LLC and etc. I will keep it although I formed my company after reading this book.

If you are thinking of starting your own business in California, especially if you have never done it before, you will find that this book is worth its weight in gold.

This resource takes the complication out of starting a business, contacting the right agencies and doing things legally. It cuts through a lot of confusion, has an encouraging tone and presents what you need to know in a very logical and easy to understand format.

I often recommend this book to my small business clients and find it to be a useful general reference. It also points to many other good resources and is a good value for such a comprehensive book.

This book saved me a lot of money by allowing me to form my own one-owner California corporation. I liked the fact that it explained why it wasn't recommending certain things so that you could decide whether it was worth it to you or not.

The only area that I felt it could have explained things more thoroughly was that while it explained how to issue initial shares, it didn't explain at all how to issue any subsequent shares (e.g., in case your corporation was about to run out of money and you (the owner) wanted to buy more shares to inject more capital). It just said to consult a lawyer. So I had to inject more capital via a loan instead. If it's that complicated, then perhaps the author should warn people to slightly overcapitalize the corporation initially.

Great help for Schedule C and 8829
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-12
I'm working on my schedule C and 8829 and every so often I get to a question I don't understand. I go to the IRS instructions and their web site and it's as clear as used motor oil. It's enough to drive you insane.

Picked up this book and it's spelled out in plain English. No need to read a passage five times to understand.

As others have stated, you need this BEFORE you start your business and you need it a year before you do your taxes. In other words, it will help you along with your 2006 return and you can learn from it on how to do a better job for 2007 by keeping the right documents and receipts in order to get even bigger legitimate deductions. I know I wish I'd had this book last year!

With that said, this is not a line-by-line assistant for Schedule C and the 8829 which I wish it was at times. There are just times when the IRS uses a specific term on a specific line and it would help to have a layman's definition at hand. I didn't get that with this book. Nonetheless, it's been one of the best sources of information I've found for doing one's self employment tax forms.

Internet Law Primer

Review Date: 2007-07-31
The book serves as a brisk review of the most common internet laws. These laws, such as, for example: I.P., DMCA, privacy and security laws, slander and libel, contracts, etc., must be well understood by almost anyone involved in operating a website. The cost of not knowing of what is legal or where liability ends can cost a fortune.

The book does well as a quick reference or internet law primer with a few injunctions brought up for further clarification. But I would not recommend the book for those who need detailed analysis of any internet law.

The book ends with ten likely legal oversights that could shutdown your website, a glossary, and a forms appendix, a privacy and acceptable use policy, and contractual agreements that you are free to use for your own company.

This book will give you peace of mind...

How rare to find a book about a complex topic that clearly, precisely, and effectively illuminates the darker corners of a new continent just now being strung with lights. Mr. Trout's book is easy to read, but not naive; clear without being facile; and, most importantly, useful without the clutter that often incapacitates resources whose primary goal is to navigate technical material. Need expert advice from an experienced and successful attorney? Turn to "Internet Laws" for guidance.

Reverting back to my comments on Mr. Daily's( Tax Savvy For Small Businesses) and Mr. Kamoroff's(A Small time Operator)reviews, this book coupled with the two previously mentioned books, should provide an outstanding foundation to start off with, as far as what you should and must do to operate a small business when it concerns your tax liability.

This books concentration is based more on past precedents passed down by both the Appeals Courts and the Tax Courts, and what procedures can and cannot be implemented. Gives specific instruction in accordance with the IRC code, to follow and to determine what can be done to legally lower your tax liability.

This book is more legally technical than both books I mentioned above. While Daily's book gives you general examples of accounting procedures and legalities, Kamoroff book gets into the nuts and bolts of accounting procedures, along with a step by step guide to implement those procedures. These 3 books should be on every entrepenuer's shelf, for future reference and procedures.
