Lays out criminal procedure for lay persons and lawyers
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-26
Akhil Amar, a distinguished law professor at Yale University, has written a very accessible book that discusses what's wrong with criminal procedure today.

Most people tend to think that the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments protect the guilty far more than society. For example, under the Exclusionary Rule, courts must suppress evidence that is obtained unlawfully, even if the suppression results in letting criminals free. (Studies show that in reality, the percentage of cases in which criminals escape prosecution on technicalities is quite low.) Notwithstanding the cries of the ACLU and other defenders of criminal rights (such as Alan Dershowitz), most people probably think this system is crazy.

Professor Amar explains why a common sense approach is in fact the best way to interpret these constitutional rights. His analysis involves both a plain reading of the language of the Amendments (a textual approach) as well as the historical understanding of these rights (a Framers' intent approach). Both ways of looking at the issue confirm his belief that the Supreme Court has made a number of wrong turns throughout the years.

Lay persons will not find this book too difficult or theoretical.

We bought a luxury condo from Crescent Heights (they are mentioned in this book). The design of our place is awful and the materials used are substandard. Suffice it to say, there are a lot of problems in our new condo. We bought this book to learn about construction litigation and found this book quite valuable.

If your looking for a forms book for construction contracts this is the one. The book is filled with standard AIA documents and includes the typical verbage explaining each section. The cool, unexpected item is the alternative contract language. For example, indemnification terms has the standard AIA verbage and then has 3-5 alternate versions of the same section. Pretty slick.

This book should be required reading of any professional tax adviser. It is very thorough, a bit dry at times, but way better than reading the tax code directly! Mr. Crouch explains exactly what you need to do and why. In addition he provides examples.

Contracting With the Federal Governmernt - 4th Edition
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-29
The publication, while a bit dated (i.e., circa 1998), provides a particularly good mix of general overview of the overall government contracting process and on-point detail with respect to such issues as FAR/DFAR rules and regulations, cost accounting standards, disclosure statements, cost and pricing data and a plethora of other relevant topics. The book was a very good resource, particularly for anyone who is in need of a one-stop guide to a very broad topic.

Excellent insider tool

Review Date: 2007-01-19
This book is an excellent tool for anyone looking for insights in this topic. If you're new in transfer pricing, you'll find it easy to understand and to get an overview of TP that companies tipycally don't like to discuss or share. If you're working in TP you can use it as a benchmark. Don't expect large formulas to calculate the options to hide your profits in low-tax countries, but you'll find organizational aspects, financial details, approach and strategy.
