Kirin Narayan's ethnography is an amazing work. I originally bought it for a class but could not put it down. I love ethnographies and study religion (mainly Buddhism, although Hinduism is another interest of mine), so I approach this book from the perspective of a Western academic, but honestly, Narayan's writing is extremely down-to-earth and readable by anyone, I believe. Her story reads like a novel rather than an ethnography, and she intertwines Swamiji's stories, the history surrounding him and them, and Swamiji's life and her own seemingly effortlessly.

This book makes folklore accessible and interesting. The subject--stories recounted by hindu holymen and why and how they are told--is fascinating. Ethnographic information on the hindu religion and culture is brillant and full of life and humor. Kirin Narayan was also my University of Wisconsin-Madison anthropology professor and she was awesome!

This is a "must have" book for muzzle loading gunsmiths.

The Kindig book is a classic for those people who are interested in firearms of the muzzle loading period. The book is has well detailed photographs. These are very important for those people researching muzzle loading firearms with an eye towards building their own. They give the builder a reference from which to base appointments that are appropriate to the school and age period of the firearm. If you are starting a "builders" library this is one of the books to have.

The seminal photographic tribute to the American longrifle.

Joe Kindig's _Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle_ is a major work, cataloguing as it does the exhaustive Kindig longrifle collection. Even now, thirty seven years after its initial publication, no other work in the field (with the possible exception of George Shumway's _Rifles of Colonial America_, in two volumes,) comes close to its breadth of analysis, or to the sheer number of splendid arms shown in fine B&W illustrations. Each of the several 18th century Pennsylvania gunmaking schools is anlayzed individually, with several rifles from that school presented and discussed.

The text is far from dry and analytical, however. It is alive with humor and anecdotes, and apart from being top-notch research (or very educated opinion where the facts are unknown as yet), is a joy to read in its own right.

Most likely the book will be bought for its illustrations, though, for as interesting as the text is, the book is splitting at the seams with hundreds of crisp black and white photogtraphs from the late Mr. Kindig's landmark rifle collection which he assembled over his long life. Virtually every phase of metamorphosis in the fascinating development of the American longrifle is shown in close detail, with textual analysis of each rifle answering questions and asking new ones as well.

It is difficult to imagine delving into this field of study and not owning _Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle_. It is a vivid portrait of one of the great American artforms, and of a collection that may never again be altogether in the same place under the same owner, especially one as affectionate toward its subject as Joe Kindig.

Title: Threads of Deception
Author: James Fletcher
Genre: Crime fiction
Length: 252 pages

"Threads of Deception" written by James Fletcher is a must read. The webs of deception wove through this novel draws the reader into each of the characters' individual act of betrayal. I know this is the first of many successful books that will be written by Mr. Fletcher and I for one look forward to reading the next.

I rate this book ***** stars.

great book about a woman losing her family, marrying for security, leaving then maturing into herself. Not preachy, whiney, or mushy. Just a wonderful story of choices and circumstances and hope and life.

This book is wonderfully written!

It is a tale of one woman's struggle to find her identity. It isn't sentimental or feminist, but simply a story about making the wrong choices... and surviving; only to find, that there is still plenty of time to make the right ones. The book reads fast!!! I am an avid reader and this one is my all-time favorite!

In Tiny Cracker Zoo, Chris Master digs into his childhood and comes up with gold. Here is a collection of engaging stories full of misery and wit, over-the-top language and wry observations of human nature. These stories are funny! The backwoods folks, the do-gooders, and the fearsome rednecks remind you that America still has what it takes to make a simple life completely idiotic. Yet, there are touches of great warmth, truthful scenes of family life and honor and respect given to those folks who suffer the duties of parenthood. And yes, you have to wonder about a kid who hands his pop a handkerchief full of poop. I can't wait to read about Chris Master's teenage years.

Hilarious!

I really loved this book. I picked it up with the intension of reading only one or two short stories before bed. However, I found myself unable to turn away from the world Pennsyltucky. The author gives us not only a wonderful collection of stories, but also a believable and genuinely vulnerable central character.

This book is really informative, it presents cases from wonderful unpublished and untapped sources, like the Providence Council Papers, different town clerks' papers, etc.

For genealogy in Rhode Island, MASS and CT, this is one great book to have. The author presented all the challenges on these families very well. It really is well done, wish she'd come out with another one. The service getting this book was fast.

Dr. Herndon has produced a magnificent collection of narratives that have been derived from a variety of primary source documents. Her book is a must for any serious student of colonial history, and would be quite useful for someone doing genealogical research.

The author has done a commendable job of balancing research and art; unlike many books from this genre, the book is both academically challenging and eminently readable.

Dr. Herndon has given life to voices who would have otherwise remained silent for eternity. The individuals and families in the narratives had a story to tell, and the author has provided a magnificent vehicle for these compelling micro-histories.

Chief Balzic has to suffer through the Christmas season
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-24
As you can easily guess from the title of this seventh Mario Balzic mystery, Christmas is threatening Rocksburg, Pennsylvania and it becomes obvious fairly quickly in "Upon Some Midnights Clear" that Balzic has good reason for dreading the holidays. Ed Sitko, the chief of the city's volunteer firefighters calls to tell Balzic about Mrs. Gabin, who was mugged of...in Christmas money and demands to know what the chief of police is going to do about it. But before Balzic can get around to investigating the case Sitko has his men out collecting money for the victim and the more Balzic looks into what happened, the less he likes it. However, Balzic's life is nothing if not extremely complicated and in trying to clean up this mess he has to deal not only with the bigoted fire chief but a newspaper columnist who has little regard for the truth unless it suits her needs, an alienated Vietnam vet and his friends who are tired of being blamed for losing the war, and a small time criminal who always manages to worm his way out of trouble. When Balzic finds himself in Musconi's listening to the old crime boss give him advice, he knows that Christmas is going to be anything but merry.

"Upon Some Midnights Clear" is the Mario Balzic mystery that K.C. Constantine needed to write at this point in the series because the character had been dangerously close to wallowing in self-pity. Certainly he has been ignoring his family way too much in the last few novels, whose plot lines have threatened to consume his soul. When you have a character who able to enforce his sense of justice on those around him not just because of his personality but because of his position of power it becomes important for the reader to feel such a person is connected to the real world and not off rambling around their own little kingdom. Being nice to the wife and kids is important because of the grounding it provides Balzic.

Constantine's approach remains the same. Balzic engages in a series of conversations in order to work his way to the truth of a given situation. This time around he is haunted by more than his usual share of doubts, which compels him to several key moments of self-reflection. Maybe just writing about Christmas was enough to get Constantine to lighten up a bit with regards to both Balzic and what happens in Rocksburg, because I certainly did not have the sense of wallowing in dirt and filth like I had after some of these novels, especially the previous effort, "Always a Body to Trade." Something approaching a happy ending, even if it means justice comes in the form of a man getting away with a crime for which he is guilty being punished for one in which he is innocent, is definitely a welcome relief. Balzic will almost certainly be back in the trenches, but at least this time around he gets the most important thing right.

The best holiday mystery ever!

Review Date: 2000-12-09
I read this every year during the holidays and it's a crime (no pun intended) that it's out of print. The theft of an old lady's Christmas Club money leads to. . . well, you'll have to find out for yourself. Constantine's pitch-perfect depiction of a western Pennsylvania XMAS (i.e., gloom, cold and slush) captures a side of the holiday that most would choose to ignore. And his old ladies can't be beat. Usually, they do the beating. (see Grievance, his most recent mystery.) It's time for a reissue.
