A Really Beautifully Done Tribute to Hostetler's Carving and Sculpture

Review Date: 2008-08-22
For more than four decades David Hostetler worked on "The American Woman"
Theme. He always preferred the simple title of "Carver" rather than sculptor or artist.
"The art of David Hostletler has long been identified with a singular motif, the female human form. Termed `The American Women,' the theme has evolved over a period of four decades, shifting, and changing, and adjusting in response to factors as varied as man's artistic tendencies."
As the artist states, "I have played with and lived with wood since my childhood. I am enamored with its feel, its color, its shapeability, but most of all with the fact that it is a living material. It has a life that mirrors our own; it records the seasons; our very existence on this planet is recorded in its calendar of growth rings. When I'm meditating in my woods, I'm literally a tree hugger and often place my ear on a tree to listen to its inner voice, sounds rhythms. Trying to get in tune with the big rhythms of life might explain my life-lone love affair with drums and drumming."
The "carver" has spent almost 40 years as an educator. He has also been a farmer, art commune founder, rock band drummer, and collector and champion of American folk art. He has always remained true to himself and generously shared his art and knowledge with his thousands of college students. He rejected the idea of moving to New York to claim his rightful place in the world of art. He knew he had to remain where his heart told him was his correct place on the planet. He is confident that his place in art and folk are is safe. His work speaks eloquently to all that encounter it.
Ohio University Press spared no expense in producing this photographic record of their "carver." The coated paper is perfect for both the high quality black and white photographs as well as many wonderful color photographs. The photographic record is unusually fine because from the time he arrived at the Athens Ohio main campus of Ohio University he was surrounded by many of the finest photographers in the world. The pictures included in the book were taken by the likes of "Portraits of Greatness" portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh, and many other graduates of the university who later worked for magazines such as "Look," "National Geographic," and other major picture oriented magazines. Terry Eiler the book's editor and photographer of many of the volume's outstanding illustrations met and became friendly with the "carver" while a photography major in the O.U. art school in the early 1960's. He first began photographing the famous artist-professor at that time and remained a life-long friend of Hostetler during the intervening years. The tome also contains several excellent essays about the artist and his work. This is a wonderful tribute to David L. Hostetler. Even the book's cover is a terrific graphic of one of the "carver's" creations. Buyers of this volume of Americana won't be disappointed. The work shown in the book is so real it almost seems like the reader could reach out and touch it.

Great Firsthand Account of the Indians of the Old Northwest

Review Date: 2002-05-13
David Zeisberger was a Moravian missionary who immagrated to England's North American colonies in 1740 and became one of the first white men to live among the Indian tribes of the Old Northwest. He spent many years living among the Delaware in western Pennsylvania and Ohio, founding the famous "Praying Indian" towns at Salem, Shoenbrun, and Gnadenhutten in the years just before the American Revolution. Zeisberger worked tirelessly to convert the Indians to Christianity for many years on the frontier when it was a hostile and dangerous wilderness. This book is translated from Zeisberger notes made while living among the Delaware in the period 1780-81. They describe in great and accurate detail the lifestyle and culture of the Indians. It details all aspects of religion, hunting, social structure, foods, medicine, clothing, etc. of the Delaware and the eastern woodland tribes in general. It also gives an overview of the flora and fauna of the Ohio Country in the years prior to white settlement. "History of the Northern American Indians" is a valuable piece of 18th century literature and should be read by any student of frontier or Indian history.

Great book for getaway planning. All the destinations are no more than two hours away from Cincinnati and go into all directions. This book has helped me discover many hidden gems in this area, such as the Ohio Caverns in West Liberty, Ohio, as well as Constitution Square in Danville, KY. Definitely a must have!

As soon as I heard about this book I picked up my copy here on Amazon. I am familiar with Ty Greenlees' photography, and having attended the Dayton Air Show throughout the 1990's this book was a must have for me. As soon as I took it out of the box I realized I had made a wise choice. This book is beautifully designed, well written, and is filled with fantastic photography from the past 20 or so years of the Dayton Air Show.

The book is well organized by theme ("Warbirds", "Military jets", "Blue Angels", "Thunderbirds", etc.) and I can't say enough about the design of the book.....each page has it's own unique page layout that helps the viewer flow easily from one photograph to the next.

If you have ever attended an air show, or are just a fan of aviation this book is a must have for you.....trust me, this book will be one of the treasures in your collection!

I was first turned on to Josh Howard from an early issue of Black Harvest at the first comic-con I attended in Dallas. I was very impressed with the fantastic "pin-up" type artwork and the cliffhanger story. I looked for a while for his work at my local comics dealer, but then I forgot about it. A year later I was cleaning my office and found this early preview issue and thought I would track the series down. Black Harvest, was excellent, and it made me want to find his earlier work. I found Dead@17. Great artwork, and the "pin-up" style continues throughout most of his books. And it was a great story. It had quite a few similarities to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And, I enjoyed this story just as much. I am glad I was able to get the entire series in one trade paperback so that you can have the entire storyline. This is a great read for any fans of the genre.

Hattie's son - review of Mom's book

Although I am without question biased, this book is worth the read. Hattie and Dick Larlham created the definitive, and still the world's benchmark, treatment center for profoundly damaged children. Hattie was an RN, and Dick was a welder, hardly the folks who we usually depend on to create this sort of charitable institution. But they did. This is their story (by necessity, in large part hers), and the story of how they did it, with a strong faith in God, and an incredible determination. There are better writers, but there's no better story.

This is a look at the life of a Pastor as he looks back at the life and times of his sermons, the people he has met, and the times he has endured. You will laugh, cry and understand the humbling stories contained within the small, yet very fullfilling book.

A collection of award winning verse

Review Date: 2008-05-05
The publishing of poetry is and always should be the hallmark of the academic press. Such is the case with the Ohio University Press who has now made available to the reading public "Dear Regime", a collection of award winning verse by Roger Sedarat (Assistant Professor of English, Borough of Manhattan community College, City University of new York). Sedarat is the recipient of scholarships to the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference and the St. Botolph Society poetry grant. His poetry has appeared in such prestigious journals as the 'New England Review', the 'Atlanta Review', and 'Poet Love'. Focusing his poetic skills upon themes and subjects associated with or arising from the culture of Iran, "Dear Regime" will aptly serve to introduce a whole new generation of readers to an articulate body of free verse and prose poetry that is as superbly crafted as it is memorable in both theme and substance. 'Picnic': Tea is to saffron as kneeling on the rug/is to a history of kings on the road/erecting tents, roasting lambs, etc.//Back in the city, who will free the prisoner/is to the guard as what is written/on papyrus is to ink.//When Haji goes to the park the ants arrive,/drawing a line from their mound/to the basket of fresh fruit and cutlet.//The ants are to analogies as cutlet/is to rhetoric. The exponential burden of laboring/bits of ground meat on tiny red bodies//thus makes a text worth eating./This is the story of Haji's hunger/read in the mountains on an April day.//It may indeed prove delightful/to put one's bare feet in a cold spring/after such an arduous climb.//Yet in the final analysis, it is only a test/of his verbal strength to view the city from the country/and try not to compare.

The way the author describes the caracters and the action in the book, made it visible to me as I read it. I could very easily see this book as a movie, it had everything you could want in a mystery book. It has a very interesing murder weapon. The main character isn't the typical PI.
