I don't generally read non-fiction, but this book was as compelling to me as any novel. I found myself stopping on every page and asking whoever was in the room, "Did you know that..." The study of gorillas is fascinating to me now, due mainly to the style of writing of Jeff Lyttle. You'll love this book!

Though this was not a subject title that I would necessarily find intriguing, it was indeed most intriguing and insightful. I found the book very easy to follow and the photos helped me to see more fully the personality distinctions of each animal.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in animals in general.

I plan to have a copy donated to the library of our local middle school.

In this book author Shirley Dunbar shares with the reader her research on glassware produced by the A.H. Heisey Company, from 1896-1924.

This book contains page after page of large, full color pictures of the different pieces. This is always joy to have as it makes identifying your piece so much easier. You can also find the market value of each piece which is another great plus.
We are given a history of the Heisey Company and its founder and helpful tips for buying and caring for glassware.

this book is the first book on Heisey glassware to completely cover the early period from 1896-1924. It offers a complete history of the company and includes original color photographs of over 50 patterns along with explanations and dates of origin. It is NOT copies of sales catalogues, but rather an encylcopedia of photos of actual glass pieces. It is highly recommended for collectors of pattern glass, elegant glassware and fine glassware of this time period.

I found lots of "different" recipes that were simple to make and tasted great. Definitely add this one to your collection.

I have to say that I was on the "testing and planning" committee for this cookbook and I can't be happier reading everyone's reviews. Over 600 recipes were triple-tested in order to get the ones for this volume. I have used it over and over for gatherings and meals for my family. I'm always pleased with each recipe. It has something for everyone and the history about Cincinnati is wonderful. It makes a great gift for someone!!

The design is aesthetically pleasing, the facts about Cincinnati are interesting (and I lived there for four years), and the Teller's House Salad can't be beat. I've bought this cookbook at least five times for friends and family and will continue to do so. My only complaint ... where is volume 2?? :-)

Jesus According to Scripture: Restoring The Portrait From the Gospels is an extensive and erudite account by Darrell L. Bock (Research Professor of New Testament Studies, Dallas Theological Seminary) that strives to piece together a thorough and accurate portrait of Jesus Christ as drawn from the synoptic gospels, as well as an analysis of Jesus' portrayal in The Book of John. No effort is spared in the scrutinizing of close detail resulting in a truly scholarly and meticulous reconstruction which presents the reader with a clear and cohesive portrait of the Christ himself. Jesus According To Scripture is a welcome and impressive contribution to Christian Theological Studies in general, and those who seek a clearer understanding of the Gospel depiction of the role and personhood of Jesus in particular.

Darrel Bock has delivered a lengthy and scripturally sound portrayal of the life of our Lord and Christ. The Person and work of Christ is done biblical justice and denies the 'self' any right to claim salvation as originating in man. God-in-the-flesh condescended to His creation, His creatures, to bring them redemption thru His vicarious atonement on the Cross - a life led and laid down in glory to the Father.

Bock harmonizes the Synoptic Gospels, side by side, and quotes various original translations with each separate episode. He then deals with John as a separate account - as that of Christ revealed from heaven to us.

This work is a solid refutation of the many 'Jesus traditions' that have circulated the last century - namely, that of the 'origins' critical school. It is thoroughly scriptural and bases its reading upon the divine inspiration of Scripture. This is the true Son of God revealed!

`Without an appreciation of His suffering, Jesus' messianic calling is not understood. Only as the cross draws near does the full scope of divine promise and calling emerge.' pg 33

`The servant Jesus is an example of how to walk with God in a world that rejects those sent by God. It is here that the pastoral demands of discipleship appear as well (Mark 10: 35- 45).' pg 33

`Jesus' work brings intense rejection and will lead to persecution one day. This means that disciples must persevere in their walk in the face of great persecution (Luke 21:7-19). The two great obstacles to discipleship are the pressure that this persecution produces and excessive attachment to the world, especially thru possessions (Luke 8: 11 - 15, 18:8).' pg 37

`What Jesus gives thru His work is deliverance, forgiveness and ultimately enablement, alongside the eternal life God gives.' pg 37

`At the end of the Gospel, blessing comes to those who have faith without the need for signs (John 20: 29).' pg 41

`Jesus' death shows the love of the Father for His own people and is an example to disciples of how they should love, (John 13: 1, 11 - 17); and is a means by which the Son and Father are glorified as life is made available through Him (John 3:14 - 16).' pg 41

Very thorough, important for treatment of the gospels

There are certain books that ought to be on every Christian's bookshelf when it comes to the Bible. One of these books ought to be Jesus According to Scripture. In this, Bock goes through each periscope and provides some points that ought to be considered. Another valuable part of this book is "Major Themes in the Evangelists' Portrait of Jesus' Theology." No preacher should tackle the Gospels without this by his side. I'm very impressed with Bock and his research and cannot recommend him highly enough!

Two Thumbs up for Darrell Bock!

This scholarly, yet approachable volume on the life of Jesus will appeal to both scholars and interested laypeople alike. While not exactly dumbing down, Bock writes in a style that would allow one not familiar with the technical sources cited to breeze over that material and get to the heart of Jesus' teachings.

Bock masterfully synthesizes the Gospels into a coherent, thematic picture of the Jesus of history. Bock's methodology uses very technical synoptics to piece together the gospel accounts of the life and teaching of Jesus and present the "portrait from the Gospels." The history of the life of Christ comes alive, and Bock draws on historical and cultural data to further the reader's understanding of the texts.

Most will find the overview of the four gospels at the beginning a good introduction (or a great refresher) to the historical and form issues of each.

Most excitingly, Bock deals a devastating blow to critical scholars (i.e. John Dominic Crossan, and his minions)who seek to undermine the credibility of the gospel accounts of the life of Christ. After reading this work, it becomes very apparent that these Jesus "scholars" are far from scholarly in their treatment of the life of Christ. They are simply revisionist historians making attempts to form their own portrait of Christ and read it back into the gospels. Bock doesn't argue against these fascimiles of biblical scholars in this volume, but his portrait of Christ makes it clear that theirs are thoroughly counterfeit.

I give Bock's book two thumbs up. A refreshing alternative to the critical garbage we've all been forced to put up with for the last century. At last, a biography of Jesus that is evangelical, scholarly, intelectually stimulating, and a historically accurate picture of the life and ministry of Christ.

Very practical and useful

Dr Bock has performed a great service to the Evangelical and faith seeking world. This treatment of the Life of Christ, is a fine update to a previvous work by fellow DTS professor Dwight Pentacost. It is a easy to understand and follow work, and contains Dr. Bock's interaction with current NT work in the area of Christiology. It is useful for both the newest believer and the seasoned pastor. This anthology is an invaluable resource. It certainly must omit some works that "should" be in it. There is only so much space and future editions will surely correct the omissions. I would like to point out, however, that Buck is not the only woman to win both Nobel and Pulitzer. Toni Morrison has also won both awards for her literature.

This anthology has been more relevant to me over the years since I've graduated from college (with a BA in English) than any of the others I own. For bibliophiles who have an interest in understanding the unique position women have had over the centuries in articulating their thoughts, lives, concerns, desires, etc., this anthology is a must. I am constantly pulling it from the shelf to look up the author bios, historical background information, etc. But more than that, I really enjoy returning to it to read favorite poems and short stories by the most celebrated women writers of all time. I have given this anthology as a gift and recommended it on numerous occasions to friends and acquaintances who are interested in further understanding women's history, literature, feminism, etc. I also have some of the literary criticism the editors have written (Madwomen in the Attic, others) and recommend those as well.

The female literary tradition, long neglected, emerges as one that has not only developed concurrently with, but has also influenced male literati. In this large and fascinating volume we meet the minds that analyzed and chronicled the lives these women lived and observed.

One might argue about the selections included and excluded here. Pearl Buck, the only woman to win both a Nobel Prize (1938) and a Pulitzer (1932) is excluded.

The book is divided into 6 eras, each with a lengthy "period introduction" giving historical and thematic backgrounds for the works included in that section.

From the five earliest women writers (dating from 700 to 1600), women began to shape and define their literary voices. England's first professional woman writer, Aphra Behn, whose literary career began in 1670, is the writer who women must honor above all others. According to Virginia Woolf, "it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds."

Here the reader will find rare works such as Jane Austen's "Love and Friendship" and George Eliot's "The Lifted Veil." Three notable novels are included in their entirety: JANE EYRE by Charlotte Bronte, THE AWAKENING by Kate Chopin, and THE BLUEST EYE by Toni Morrison.

Poems, stories, memoirs, essays, plays, letters, novels -- all literary works originally composed in English -- over 150 authors decrying, exalting, agonizing over, and celebrating the things we all have in common: Life...love...and death.

This is a fascinating collection and one that will stand reading and re-reading over a long period of time.

I first opened this book because of a Women's Lit class I took last year. Sure, I was excited, but I really did not expect to find it interesting. After all, the public school system only allows a few women writers to be taught: Mary Shelly, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Kate Chopin, and Emily Dickerson. But what about the many wonderful women writes who have not been taught at length? Anne Sexton, Toni Morrison, Elizabeth Bareet Browning, Christina Rosettie, Maya Angelou, Sylvia Plath, Anne Finch...the list is endless, literally. Every woman should own a copy of this book, regardless of whether you need it or not. It is time to spread the enormous talent of the world's best poets and authors. Many could not publish their works or gain the respect of their equally talented male writers, now it is time to give the Ladies all the credit they deserve.

"Radio Daze" is like looking back into a time portal of recent history packed with behind the scene info and details of the legendary radio station.
Olszewski paints an easy to read and interesting portrait of WMMS, its owners, management and DJ's. His non-stop tapestry of employee's mixed with stories of some of the original rockers are both interesting and entertaining.
WMMS was the dominant radio station of its time in the Cleveland, Ohio area and was co-existing in a parallel complimentary world of rock music. Riding the airwaves of some of the greatest rock bands ever to emerge out of the musical creative times of the 60's and early 70's.
Ambitious undertakings seemed to be prevalent with the youthful WMMS management, and from my observations they weren't following any recommended guidelines on building a brand name. In a parallel universe the early WMMS management team would have been likened to a band of swashbucklers under the Jolly Roger. Marconi would turn over in his grave if he new of the amount of time this troop spent irritating the other radio stations with Gestapo like tactics to bring in ratings. After reading some of the excerpts in "Radio Daze" I was a little afraid to turn the radio on fearing retaliation.
Some of the highlights: How the radio stations personal helped promote some of the new breed of rockers with radio airplay and marketing promotions. How the WMMS management were very influential in orchestrating a campaign to acquire votes to bring the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" to Cleveland. The seemingly constant shifting of DJ personal [including nicknames] various antics, egos and a mind set where even sabotage was not out of the question.
This book is not filled with off the shelf information, but valid details from someone who was there. Olszewski does a great job of blending 1st person knowledge and then writes from the 3rd person. With his writing abilities and his descriptive style he makes you feel like he's talking to you over a hamburger, fries and a beer. The author definitely has the "worn out shoes" when it comes to his credentials and knowledge base for acquiring information for this multifaceted book.
He has the exclusive rights to exclaim "The World Premier" of books about the birth of FM radio in Cleveland Ohio.

I Was There!

I remember walking into the penthouse of the Statler Hilton hotel on a chilly night in October 1971. I was a young antiwar protestor delivering leaflets to fledgling prog rocker WNCR. As I walked into the control room, I was intrigued by the ambience. Loud music blared from the large Electro Voice speakers mounted above the Gates Stereo Statesman console. Behind the mic was a bearded cat by the name of Jeff Gelb. He was really cool and allowed me to hang out with him. I ended up becoming an intern and fetched coffee and answered phones for Lyn Doyle's "People's Night on the Radio" show. A week or two after I started, my first cousin, Carolyn Thomas walked in. I asked her what she was doing there and she asked me the same question! It turned out that she was working overnights!! (I also found out that Doyle was my cousin by marriage). After WNCR moved to the Stouffer Building around December 1971, interns were exiled and I moved to WMMS working with Billy Bass and David Spero for a few months. It was amazing to watch them work. I ended up back at WNCR in February of 1972 and had a chance to run the board and "ride gain" for Carolyn and Lee Andrews on occasion. Those days were magical and I ended up in radio myself for over 20 years, working at stations in LA and Cleveland. If you want to relive those times, this is the book to read...

This book is an easy read and has some great stories in it. I was lucky enough to have been around radio in those days, in particular WMMS(though I never worked there, but my uncle was the PD) and this book brought back some great memories. It really shows the passion Cleveland had for it's Rock and Roll and it's radio. It is a great commentary on the greatness that TRUE competition can harbor. Nice job Mike.

If you ever listened to FM radio during the 70's and 80's this is a book for you. I expected a textbook but instead got a wonderful ride through the FM radio ages. It doesn't matter what city you were in, this story is for everyone. Remember when radio had a personality? This will refresh your memory. Top 40 died and a new age was created, one that has flourished, made superstars out of bar bands, legends out of local stars. All the stories are here...you will ENJOY!!

Universal Principals...

This book is about universal principles relating to Christian teachings. However, these universal principles were created by God and are taught quite extensively throughout the Word. For example; Pat speaks of the law of reciprocity which the unsaved world calls "karma". Jesus taught reciprocity when he said "Give and it shall be given to you." Newton even taught about it: "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." Pat explains this principle and many more as how they relate to the Word and how they can work in your lives. If you're looking for no nonsense, Bible based yet scientifically grounded teachings...read this book!

I only can hope that this book sheds light on to the athiest world that we live in. If things don't start changing around here a little bit I am gonna have to convert over to Islam or something. I need some God in my life, you know, salvation and all that jazz. Pat R. brings it on like donkey kong. He knows how to throw out some zingers and boy is he smart. One time he said he couldn't understand how evolution takes place and so he prayed to the lord and the lord said 6,000 years is all it takes my son. I mean wow who would of thought that to the answer to all are problems could be solved by a little discussion with Christ. Also, Pat is a healer - I once witnessed him telling the world that he saw a women with no brain in his vision and he said lord give her a brain and then Pat R. said she has a brain. I wish the world knew the Pat R that I know. Read this book and you too can heal - ...

This book shows you how to apply the principles given by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount to your life. Pat Robertson is saying, these are the principles of God's invisible kingdom, if you apply them you will experience the results of doing so. Applying principles is one thing, knowing the God Who gave the principles takes you a step further and that is encouraged in this book also. Learning about God and His ways is wonder-filled, i.e., abundant living. This book encourages you to tap resources beyond the physical, to learn how God's kingdom operates.

I would easily put this book among the best that I have ever read. The images that Roorbach uses keep coming back to me even though it has been well over a year since I read it. The honesty of his writing is amazing, and there were many, many times that I had to pause because the emotional descriptions were so true. Read this book-- by the end you will feel like an old friend at Roorbach's wedding, and you will be glad not to have missed it.

This memoir records the struggles of a young writer trying to find his literary voice by portraying his distraction, frustrations, and devotions to his art through his adventures with his future wife as they encounter a variety of people and animals--turkeys, turtles, hummingbirds, and bluefishes--in many beautiful natural environments. Their adventures are always fascinating andamusing, and, at times, exciting.

This book is a paper plane, it will take you away. From the first page, Bill Roorbach takes us on a wonderful journey during a time of his life, when he first meets his wife Juliet in Martha's Vineyard. It becomes a wonderful, weird, chaotic time for both. This book will make you honestly laugh out loud, and shake your head in disbelief, at the experiences and adventures that these two people take on. It is filled with nature in all it's glory, and sometimes not so glorious. This is a man that writes the way we think. The conversations that he has with himself are so lively, and funny that you will want to shake his hand heartily and say "Yes, Yes, I know just what you mean" Read it, it's worth every word.

This is a wonderful story of one man's memories of the beginning of his true love life. Roorbach is a compelling writer in the essay style of Russell Baker, who offers his readers much in terms of language and story-telling ability. We, too, learn to love Juliet and touch the unique feelings that make this couple worthy of our attention. Perfect reading outside on a summer afternoon
