Everything and then some

As a Pennsylvanian with a fondness for old theaters, I wondered if this book was a stretch, geographically speaking. To my surprise and pleasure, it not only broadened my interest in the Jersey theaters but also filled in holes on theaters I had often heard about and occasionally visited. It's obviously a labor of love, but one done by a writer with both passion and expertise concerning his topic. The sections are broken down geographically, and the pictures are more than evocative -- I go back quite often to this book -- the photos are windows to a past that was more than special to anyone old enough to remember or curious enough to want to know more.

Paying Homage to Old Movie Theaters

What a thrill to read this remarkable tribute to old South Jersey movie theaters. Regardless of your own hometown, as you thumb through the pages and see the photographs and read the history of these grand old structures, you will be transported (as I was) to your own individual neighborhood childhood memories of going to the movies on Saturday afternoons and sitting in the dark, waiting for the big velvet drapes to open to that giant screen. Author Allen F. Hauss is to be commended for the time and effort spent sharing his love for the old movies theaters with all of us. I couldn't get over all the actual pictures of hundreds of South Jersey theaters - with descriptions, history, old movie posters, advertisements. Seeing the old Midway Theater in Camden, the Westmont Theater in Haddon Township, Steele Pier in Atlantic City (yea, Steel Pier) and countless others, resurrected my own personal memories of going to the Logan Theater in North Philadelphia back in the 50's - seeing James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause and so many others wonderful old movies. Thanks for the memories, Allen Hauss. You brought back on printed page the grand old forgotten structures that were left only to the shadows of our recollections.

Best Liberty Book since 1986!

Finally, a book worth having! There were a lot of books published between 1984 and 1986 for the statue's centennial and only a few were worth having. This newly published book is a must have for the Statue of Liberty collector, historian, or proud American.

"The Statue of Encyclopedia, serves as the first ever top-to-bottom reference on one of the most beloved national monuments. Barry Moreno, the premier expert and historian of the Statue of Liberty, leads readers on a comprehensive, beautifully illustrated A-to-Z tour. Featuring an abundance of little-known but fascinating aspects and curiosities about her history, the book also includes a vast collection of photographs - many never before published."

Every American should own this.

Whether you're political, or artistic, every American should own this book. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? An intangible concept that is broken down into encyclopedia form for scholars and us regular folks to digest. There are dozens of books about the Statue, but I found this one is by far the most comprehensive and the pictures are of outstanding quality. Highly recommended.

Strong Medicine For What Ails You

I had no idea I've been waiting for words of wisdom from a Native American Elder. But Strong Medicine is (forgive me) just what the doctor ordered.

Marion "Strong Medicine" Gould's story is a big one. She has suffered. She inspires. She laughs. She shares wisdom you'll want to reflect on. And she does not shrink down from saying what many of us think but might not say out loud. (Or in a book.)

I'm not a history buff, but I loved learning about Strong Medicine's life--precisely because of the way Hearth presented the information. I didn't feel like I was getting a lesson. I felt like I was making a new friend. A really compassionate and wise and funny one.

This book is a gem! I acutally felt each story as though it were "Stong Medicine" actually speaking directly to me. I felt all emotions, happy, excited, anticipation, and sad as she told this beautiful story.

Amy captured her and this book will truly capture you!

What a testimony of true Native American life.

A poignant collection of actual letters written by soldiers from very different backgrounds on both sides of the Civil War. I've read many historical & tactical accounts of Civil War battles, but these real-life letters brought the human aspect of the war to life for me. You can't help but get involved in their everyday drama . . . the endless marching, the waiting, the daily sacrifices, the mud and the blood. This book takes the war from the abstract to the real. It will make quite an impact on you.

If you live in a suburban town, you will enjoy this book because you'll feel like you know the characters personally-- as you probably do! In fact, you'll probably see yourself as one of the characters. A fun read-- hope to see more goings-on in Grosvenor soon.

Once again Joani Ascher has written a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The twists and turns are remarkable and just when you think you've figured it all out . . . you're wrong! The setting of "Cuts" is every woman's beauty shop nightmare. It makes me glad that I go to the barber shop. Read away, you won't be disappointed. Then go back and read her other two if you haven't already. Can't wait for number 4.

Review Date: 2004-10-06
The first, detailed, comprehensive, and thoroughly "user friendly" guidebook to some 200 of region's waterfalls, Gary Letcher's Waterfalls Of The Mid-Atlantic States provides directions to each beautiful site enabling the reader to use it as a guide book to experiencing these natural, beautiful wonders in person. Some of these sites are in or near major cities, others are tucked away in remote wilderness areas. The flowing falls are, for the most part, on national, state, and municipal parkland, forests, and game lands in Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Each waterfall is rated on a scale of 1 to 5. The location information includes GPS coordinates; trail access and difficulty; waterfall type and source; geological factors; historical and culture features; and even the best times of the year to visit them. Enhanced with tips on waterfall photography and the author's "Seven Ways to Find the Height of a Waterfall", Waterfalls Of The Mid-Atlantic States is confidently recommended reading for tri-state area backpackers, hikers, canoeists, and anyone else with an appreciation for the natural beauty and spectacular wonder of falling water.

A "must" have directory

My wife and I live on the Chesapeake Bay and cruise the ICW (north and south) so we purchased both editions the waterway guide. The information they contain is accurate and up-to-date. The airial pictures of the harbors which accompany the charts are useful visuals to orient people (such as my wife) who are relatively new to maritime navigation. The "going ashore" sections provide a wealth of information on things to do for planning a trip (we enjoy playing golf and nearby courses are listed).

I highly reccomend this guide to anyone who is interested in "exploring" the ICW and it's tributaries.

Full of information, pictures, and helpful hints.

Dozier's has done a great job compiling extensive data about harbors and presenting it in an easy-to-read format with pictures and charts. This Guide provides an overall perspective on a harbor's surroundings before delving into navigation, dockage and anchoring specifics. At the top of the page, nearby marinas are listed detailing phone numbers, slip and floating dock accommodations, which VHF channels are monitored, approach/dockside depths, fuel, repairs, electrical service, lifts and cranes, laundry/pool/showers, pump-out stations, and whether or not there are nearby grocery stores, motels, and restaurants. All this information about the marinas is presented in a chart-like form, taking up very little room on the page yet making it easily readable at a glance. This, in turn, leaves the rest of the page to be filled with helpful hints including a history of the area and what you can find if you go ashore.

Aerial photographs are in abundance with digitally-added dashed lines to show the channel routes. There are, of course, numerous advertisements throughout the Guide, and they only add to the helpful information already presented. I am very impressed by the details on dockage and anchoring - it tells you where you can and cannot anchor and what to expect once you are there.

An often-overlooked yet extremely handy feature is that this 492-page book is spiral-bound, making it easy to read on a flat table. There is still much, much more to this Guide, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to plan some overnight cruises to area harbors.

An excellent collection of essays showing a progression of Romanyshyn's thought - the deepening of themes that work there way through all his work. A fascinating synthesis of VandenBerg's metabletic approach to understanding the changing nature of human consciousness, Jungian psychology, Bachelard's work on reverie, and a poetic sensibility that leaves us open to being deeply affected by the world in which we live. Having studied with Romanyshyn, I can heartily recommend this as a primer to his work that will stir your imagination.

Dr. Romanyshyn is a senior core faculty member at Pacifica Graduate Institute and one of the original founders of its Ph.D. program in Depth Psychology. In this collection of essays written in the last ten years, he draws upon philosophy, history, literature, the arts, and poetry in creative and original ways to develop a psychology that emphasizes a metaphoric style of consciousness attuned to the imaginal landscapes of the soul and its poetic sensibility. This collection is a real treat, from the brilliant mind that brought us such classic texts in phenomenological psychology as "Technology as Symptom and Dream," "Mirror and Metaphor: Images and Stories of Psychological Life," and "The Soul in Grief." Perhaps no one says it better than Robert Sardello in the introduction to the book: "Each of the essays of this book explores the intricacies of the current of the heart, developing the vocabulary for soul's own voice rather than the speaking for soul that characterizes most psychology. The life of the soul in this book shines through the intersecting labyrinths of phenomenology, depth psychology and poetry. Perhaps the most important of disciplines for this work is phenomenology because it assures that our author never falls into theorizing about the soul but is committed to letting the inner qualities of the things of the world speak for themselves. The fundamental tenant of this book is that we are here to learn how to listen."

This is a great look at historical photos along US Route 30 in southern New Jersey, and the captions do much more than just identify the images. I live in south Jersey and I never knew there was so much history right in my backyard. The photos of the Ben Franklin Bridge are fascinating, and who knew there was a munitions factory just outside of Hammonton? This is a great book for history lovers.

I'm a fan of Ms. Maser's and continue to be amazed with her ability to write in a wide variety of genres. So I was thrilled when I saw she had a historic book out, considering that I'm also into history. I knew little about the White Horse Pike before this book and found each page to be quite interesting. The pictures are great too. If you like history, you'll like this book.

Great pictures of places that are still around and others that are no longer here. As with the other reviewer, the author could have toned down the hokey ("just a memory") remarks for every postcard. Otherwise, it was nice to see some things from before my time.

This "blast from the past" book has some great pics of long gone sights of Wildwood. My only complaint about it is that the author closes most of his narrative for each attaction with "so and so motel is but a distant memory" or some other trite, hokey closing remark.
