I read this book, along with "Casino Operations Management" by Kilby, Fox, and Lucas. Both books were EXTREMELY helpful. They both start by assuming you know nothing about the gaming industry. They then show you the history and the evolution of the industry and then take you under the covers to show you the hows and whys of casino management and its decisions. I would HIGHLY recommend both books to anyone looking to gain insight into this fascinating industry.

Anthony Hunt's book on Gary Snyder's long poem "Mountains and Rivers Without End" is a first-rate compantion to that complex and rewarding work. Snyder's poems are studded with allusions. Those can create a barrier for the reader who is not familiar with a range of Eastern religious beliefs, the geology and folklore of the Pacific Northwest, or Snyder's long and varied personal acquaintance. Anthony Hunt's analysis guides us along. I found that I would read a Snyder poem, read Hunt's discussion of that poem, and then go back to the original with renewed interest and excitement. In addition, the reader of Hunt's book gets an introduction to No Drama and a discussion of the great Chinese landscape scroll that inspired Snyder, among much other background material. Hunt makes Snyder accessible--a great scholarly achievement!

Call me old fashioned, but I think you have to love any book that includes a map of the faults surrounding Virginia Lake. Oh, did I mention the photograph of the school bus caught in the 1983 Ophir Creek debris flow.
This book is subtitled Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology Special Publication 19, and it makes me want to run out and buy the whole series. The cover has a wonderful aerial photographic of the Truckee Meadows oriented toward the south, snow clad mountains disappearing into the horizon.
Did I mention that this book is cheap?

This is an excellent publication for both the layman and experienced geologist to use while exploring the wonderful geology around southern Nevada! They used enough detail for everyone to learn something and the diagrams and images are fantastic. I highly recommend this book for anyone, especially those who are going on roadtrips through this area!

This book is a wonderful account of growing up surrounded by nature and the imagination it provokes. Shyrle's book is also rich with history and insight into the place females were expected to take during that era. The writing is sharp and descriptive without being stale. I highly recommend this book.!

sheep and the men who love them

This is a book about sheep, but is also a lot more than that.
Clel Georgetta was a sheep rancher, lawyer and Nevada District Judge. He was near the center of power in the State during the great crisis of the 30's, the Great Depression. Collapsing prices, drought and loss of confidence created a "perfect storm" for the sheep men of Nevada.
When he wrote this book in the late 60's, Judge Georgetta had a story he wanted to tell about the range lands of Nevada. He is most likely an avatar of today's so-called Sagebrush rebellion. But the public isn't really crying out for more sheep-based media.
The historical value of this book - which cannot be overemphasized - lies in Georgetta's short biography of George Wingfield, whose story has become a Nevada myth. Many are those writers who have cribbed this book to spin a sinister tale of machination and greed.
The facts are surprisingly more fascinating than all of that. Wingfield was a cowpoke, bartender and card dealer. He was a key participant in America's last great Gold Rush, where miners discovered what they called the "lake of gold."
In Goldfield Wingfield made the break from barkeep to tycoon. He built his great hotel. He carried a pair of pearl-handled revolvers, but his greater skills lay in negotiating a peaceful path through the four IWW-led strikes of 1907. He seems to have lead the whole resource-speculation boomtown-thing more honestly in Goldfield than did the San Franciscans who ran Virginia City a generation earlier.
Judge Georgetta is a great writer whose prose is direct and non-evasive. The Wingfield story that one encounters today is totally detached from history and is probably confused with All the Kings Men in the minds of those who think they understand the truth of Reno 4-111.
