I ended up needing an equivalent map for part of Norway while I was in Europe, (I miss the good old days when gasoline stations gave away road maps for free.
I bought the Norway map in a Norwegian bookstore for twice the price I paid at Amazon. I wish I had ordered a Norway map from Amazon also.

Pretty Good

I found the text by Keith Roberts to be informative without going into unnecessary depths, making this volume a good introduction to the artist. The layout is also good: each painting is shown in full, complimented with detailed close-up views, all helpfully annotated. I was disappointed with the reproduction quality. The B&W images are often heavy, reminiscent of photocopies. The colour plates look slightly washed out, desaturated. I have never seen a Bruegel in person, so I cannot say with any certainty if this is the result of poor reproduction or if it is an accurate representation of the work; however I have seen more vibrant versions elsewhere. So, the image reproduction is not excellent. The text is clear and informative enough, the annotations helpful. Very reasonably priced. This volume will satisfy your curiosities about the life and work of the artist. 38 B&W, 54 Colour

This is a precise, detailed map of the central portion of Brussels. Many of Brussels' suburbs are not included. If you think you will have need of any villages on the outskirts, e.g., Waterloo, you will need a different map.

I would prefer this book to be more categorized (by theme or country etc.) Moreover, it seems to be in chronological order, but, annoyingly, it is not always consistent.

Who are the dutch?

This promising title will guide you through the cultural, economical and business practices of the Dutch. One thing it does not take into account though is who the Dutch are. I'm Dutch and yet I cannot find any dutchman like me.

As in as many books about culture and business, generalizations have to be made in order to keep things centralized. I do not believe however that this is the right way to approach Dutch business culture.

The book is between 3 and 4 stars and is a good first step getting to know the basics of Dutch culture. When it's really good it should also learn a Dutch reader some new things as well, but this was limited.

If you really want to know a culture this cannot be done from a book. Come over to our little country and see the mills, clogs and Amsterdam. Or am I generalizing right now?

Only if you are a film archivist
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-04
This book is a transcript of a film festival of early color, silent films that was held in the Netherlands in 1995. By color, I mean two-strip technicolor, tinted, toned, or hand-stenciled color. This is a frustrating book for a couple of reasons. One reason is that the participants keep referring to specific scenes in a film. While there are about 20 beautifully reproduced color frames in the book, the reader can't exactly follow along the film by looking at the photos. Also, this book is basically a group discussion. One participant will propose a theory as to how color was used by filmmakers, or how it was perceived by audiences. Then another participant will completely rebut the theory, leaving the reader to wonder if we know anything at all about how color was used in silent film.

There is a wealth of information on the different color processes and the difficulty in preserving and restoring them. Since this is a group discussion, there is not a specific section covering this topic. Neither is there an index. Still, I would recommend this book for anyone interested in restoring and preserving classic films from the silent era.

Good economic and societal history
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-30
As described in the summary, this is a good short (250pp) volume that discusses the rise and fall of the Dutch Navy during the indicated period. It is not a detailed military history nor a reference to the vessels and facilities that comprised the Dutch Navy, as I had hoped. For those interested in the Age of Sail at a high level, I can recommend this book as it does provide insight into the problems faced by the United Provinces and the attempted solutions, as well as excellent coverage of the makeup of the crew, cadre and administration. But if you expect this book to be a technical reference to the Dutch Navy, you will be disappointed.

I am an interior designer and I bought three of these books. The photography is nice, the interiors are clean line, the furnishings are simple. All three of the books are very similiar, one would have been enough to get the feel.

Quality Technical Reference

Review Date: 2008-01-01
This is a very nice technical reference. Includes simple black and white line drawings of mushrooms and microscopic features but no photos. Unfortunately, the binding is extremely cheap, not even up to the quality of what you can get at Kinkos. Content is great but you'd think such an expensive book would have nicer binding.
