Stores today feature a multitude of products that promise to give people energy. Some of these may be helpful, but most of them are quick-fixes that ultimately leave people more fatigued. Long-lasting energy comes from "what you eat, your exercise patterns, how much and how well you sleep, how you deal with stress, and what your emotional life is like." Health writer Daryn Eller discusses these factors and how you can enhance your energy levels in her new book, Power Up: 101 Ways To Boost Your Energy. Eller suggests starting with why you feel fatigued. She says that "what sends one person into an energy crisis can differ markedly from what makes another fatigued." She offers a quick and simple quiz that helps readers zero in on their particular energy thief. From that, readers can go directly to the section of the book that will be most helpful to them. The section on nutrition includes tips for high-energy eating, information on supplements that enhance energy, suggestions for an anti-fatigue diet, and a list of "super foods." Fitness information includes "energy-enhancing strategies," how to avoid "workout drag," and a discussion of the benefits of yoga and tai chi. Those having difficulty sleeping will find lots of tips in the section on getting a good night's rest. Eller also provides information on alternative health techniques, including acupuncture, herbs, aromatherapy, correct breathing, and Healing Touch therapies. From there she moves into stress reduction, saying that "stress saps our emotional energy [and] it also draws on our physical energy as well." The final chapter is titled "When Nothing Works," which discusses some of the physical causes of fatigue such as allergies, anemia, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, lyme disease, and thyroid disease. Most of these require the services of a health care professional. Eller wrote Power Up to give people "insight into where energy comes from and how it gets depleted--sometimes inexplicably. Knowing how you get zapped will ultimately help you get more zip." Readers following her suggestions and tips will find "freedom from a life of lethargy and fatigue."

There was always the view of the busy harbor-ocean liners, freighters, tugs and barges. In the hot summer months there was always a breeze on the open deck. During heavy fogs there were close calls-making the trip a real adventure. This authenic book brought back good memories of my days commuting on the railroad ferries of the Hudson. The many rare photos and the short histories of the ferry operators add to the local color, and increase the value of this book.

co-author raymond baxter's authentic deckhand stories blend well with the historic photos and brief histories of the railroad ferry companies. dispatching of the chambers street boats had been "dumped" somewhere over the years on the gatemen. Once the rush hour ferry Youngstown left two minutes earlier than the scheduled 5:28PM departure. As a result a large number of angry commuters missed their Erie suburban commuter trains out of Jersey City. Many interesting stories abound. The photos of the ferries and the deckhand stories enabled me to relive my years of New York commuting by train and boat. Fordham University Press deserves praise for this book.

The true story of a remarkable survivor!

Review Date: 2006-06-24
Eva had loving parents when she boarded Titanic not by choice but their other ship had problems. Her mother had a premonition. She believed the ship was cursed and would never make it's final destination, New York City. Her mother had no idea how right she was. She spent her days sleeping and her nights up keeping watch. Eva and her father disregarded her mother's fear as too much. After all, Mrs. Hart never felt this way before or after Titanic. It's Eva who I remember as a Titanic Survivor speaking up on Robert Ballard's documentary in 1986. Besides being a Titanic survivor, she pursued a singing career and lived in Australia. Although she never married or had children, Eva was by no means, dull or not interesting. On the contrary, she is one of the most memorable because she became a Justice of the Peace in her town of Chelmsford, Essex, England and she was awarded an M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1974 Queen's New Years Honours List for her services to the community. Only Herbert Pittman was awarded an MBE for his services to the military during World War II. Pittman was also a Titanic survivor and crewmate who helped the survivors. Besides surviving Titanic, Eva showed how to be a survivor with dignity, grace, and class. She matured at 7 years old when she last saw her father before he perished with all the others. Her tale of survival or her years afterword could have made a film of it's merit worth watching. But most survivors don't want to see another Titanic film no matter how wonderful if it is. They still bear scars themselves.

The Speaker's Sourcebook II remains a favorite source of reference, inspiration and information for me. The author certainly pours a lot of himself in the messages following the anecdotes and stories. In many ways this is a large Chicken Soup book with ideas for application and tons of great quotes.

Good, positive quotes with an added bonus -- anecdotes!

If I were stuck on a desert island with one thousand sales people, this is the only book I would need. I have used this book so much that the cover is falling off. The book has a wide depth of topics that are easy to reference. The stories are sometimes profound and sometimes very funny. If you are a trainer or a speech writer, and you do not have a copy of this book, stop reading this and order it now. You will thank me later!

If what you like are action, adventure, and dramatic illistrations, this is not for you. If you want a contemporary view, to hold history in your hand and be brought back to 1912, this is most definately for you. Yet there is a certain emotion in examening Titanic's registration, her survey report, the port by port clearance papers of newly embarked passengers, and the other narratives and reports. The Harland and Wolff plans are the best I have yet found, while the 74 page report of the British Court of Investigation is fascinating, if somewhat dry, reading, from both a technical and human perspective. This is a must, not only for serious Titanic people, but for anyone interested in the history of the era.

My State Representative has a copy of this book and we are working on improving benefits for the State of Oklahoma. Our benefit book now has thirty two pages and seven of those are dedicated to license plates.
All PX's and BX's should have this book available to all future veterans so they can get ready to return to civilian life in their home state or any state they decide to live in.
Every Veterans Organization should have this book to have informed service officers to help veterans. Also this book should be used by service organizations to help them improve their own State's benefits.
My sincere thanks goes to Mr Armstrong & Rizzuti for the work put into this book

The guide you have been waiting for.

"American Health Care" is a collection of multidisciplinary essays supporting the argument that government and business must assume appropriate roles within health care to effectively change it. Working within these seemingly disparate roles, government and business should focus on how the private health market can further the health care system's ability to provide social services as a function in the marketplace.

The book challenges the concept that government can effectively manage the nation's health care. This model -- the authors collectively suggest -- was questioned by the public through a lack of support for the 1993 Clinton health care reform package. The editor compiles the analyses of expert economists, physicians, lawyers, and historians to explain the underlying rationale behind the public hesitancy to accept the notion that government should and can fix the deficiencies of the US health care system.

'American Health Care" provides insight that allows learned readers to speculate about where markets can take health care now and in the future. Its authors recognize that there are no fast solutions coming down the pike. This work presents concepts that are intended to generate constructive conversation toward the improvement of health care. The ideas are supported through the substantial notes and references accompanying each chapter.

Topics of discussion covered by the contributors represent four major policy areas that provide stumbling blocks to system-wide change. Essays in the first section contain discussions of the issues involved with health insurance financing, including an in-depth analysis of the Medicare program. In part 2, contributors look at health care services and institutions, antitrust issues, and reform at the state level. The effects of regulation on the drug approval process and its impact on patient care is examined in part 3, and the final section of the book looks at issues involving liability, licensing, and the health care fee structure.

The Independent Institue of California is a public policy education and reserch organization the aims -- through its various publishing programs -- to redefine the debate over public issues. In "American Health Care," it has provided ample scholarship to do so.

The collection of original essays in this volume is impressive. Together, they explore the history and current state of government policy toward health care in the United States. Each essay is clear and relevant. And the proposals make great good sense. Health care is far too important a service to be left in the hands of politicians and bureaucrats. This book helps explain why.

I purchased this book for an Advanced Materials Science course I was taking and I found that not only was it extremely useful for my paper but it was also a great read. This book goes through the events and gives quite a bit of detail on what happened and why. The book goes through transcripts from the inquiry after the disaster which I found interesting. The event was photographed pretty extensively and the author goes through the pictures and tells you what to look for and why.

The rail disaster at the Tay bridge shocked the whole world in 1879: it was the longest bridge in the world, and collapsed during a storm, taking a passenger train to its doom. There were no survivors. This new evaluation of the tragedy shows why it occurred, and counters all previous speculation that it was the storm which caused the accident. In fact, the bridge was badly designed, and built on the cheap. Perfectly good bridges had been built of cast iron columns braced with wrought iron by Eiffel in France, and still carry trains to this day. The Tay bridge started to suffer irreparable damage of its joints from the day that it carried trains, and the author shows that metal fatigue played a key role in its deterioration. The final catastrophe occurred when the damaged joints reached criticality, and over half a mile of the bridge fell with the train. The lessons learnt gave birth to the magnificent Forth Bridge, which like the Booklyn bridge, remain ikons of engineering skill to this day.

The uniqueness of this book written by Croteau and Hoynes is above all that they introduce two approaches in understanding the characteristics of modern mass media and the correlations between the media and the social forces including public opinion, commercial, political and cultural conditions. Based on the two different categories - Market and Public sphere - it helps better understand the significant role and effectiveness of media that generate not only the public opinion, but also its influences on the mainstream in politics, business, education, culture and society. These two authors provide profoundly useful and informative resources to grasp the key points of media's role and power in society based on two distinctive perspectives introduced in this book. The main concept of this book is basically about understanding the media and economies in market and public theory and how these two spheres differ from each other in terms of circulation of information and commercial activities. The authors categorize two different approaches in order to effectively analyze the media system and each of these ideas is very well organized and clearly explained along with suitable and apparent examples provided which demonstrate the importance and different evaluation in each concept. Additionally, thanks to the great job that the authors showed in this book, the contents in each chapter are really uncomplicated and even interesting to understand without any confusion. I definitely recommend this book to people who have interest in media especially considered from business and economic views.

The expert collaboration of David Croteau (Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richard, Virginia) and William Hoynes (Associate Professor and Chair of Sociology at Vasser College, Poughkeepsie, New York), The Business Of Media: Corporate Media And The Public Interest is a candid revealing and detailed study of the rapidly evolving media industry, especially in an increasingly media-saturated society. A thoroughly scholarly work which deftly presents its in-depth study in largely jargon-free and accessible terms ideal for the non-specialist general reader, The Business Of Media offers insights and a close scrutiny into what really goes on behind newspaper and broadcast journalism headlines.
