Boss Cox's Cincinnati: Urban Politics In The Progressive Era is a scholarly and meticulously researched examination of late nineteenth century big city politics as exemplified by the political structures of Cincinnati, Ohio under George B. Cox's political machine. Zane Miller (Charles Phelps Taft Professor Emeritus of American History at the University of Cincinnati) carefully explores both the nature and the significance of "bossism" and how it and municipal reform were both essential components of the political system in a the time of labor and ethnic unrest, election violence, rising crime rates, political innovation, and civic achievement. Boss Cox's Cincinnati is a highly recommended addition to political science reference collections and reading lists.

I first read this book years ago. I have always remembered the things I learned about American History. Why, for instance, the streets in most American cities run north/south, east/west. What a reward was given to veterans of the revolutionary war. It's a wonderful read. Wonderful characters, including the pigs! C

BREAKING THE FRAME: METALEPSIS AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE SUBJECT (THEORY INTERPRETATION NARRATIV)

Levels of coolness

Malina reads three very cool writers here -- Samuel Beckett, Christine Brooke-Rose, and Angela Carter. Their challenging novels grow more fascinating as Malina explores their uses of metalepsis.

(This is a very useful term from narrative theory. When the characters in the movie "Pleasantville" get sucked into the television and start living the lives of '50s sit-com characters -- that's metalepsis. They've left one narrative level and entered another.)

Malina shows that these writers have been playing sophisticated versions of this game for years. Metalepsis gives their novels uncanny power to invade a reader's life, and it raises wild questions about the political potential of fiction -- and the nature of reality itself.
Coolness, in short.

I picked this book up as an overview into the Brothers Grimm (I'm an engineering student with an idle curiosity), and I was satisfied with what I got. The book starts out with a short biography of the brothers lives', then examines their interest in folklore, myth, epic tales and the German language, along with how these topics fit together for the brothers and the significance each had. The final section is an overview of scholarly opinions of folktales in general and the Grimms' work specifically.

A lot really happened here.

This is a baised review because I'm related to one of the authors. I dearly loved this book and gave it away as Christmas presents when it came out. I've lived in Brown County most of my life and really enjoyed finding out about all the different things that happened here and the famous people that came from Brown County.(For example: President Grant, John Rankin, August Kautz, Charles Young, Thomas Hamer and many more.) I have a few other books from the same publisher about other parts of Ohio but this book was different in that there seemed to be so much more information. I suggest this book for anyone that grew up in Brown County or has visited one of it's many historical sites.

strange weather
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-10
even though this book is not available through amazon as new, I ordered it in paperback form through a competitor and give it 5 stars, I noted "strange weather" in my title because storms of this severity are not common to Ohio, and are extremely rare for southeast michigan, where I am, although not much is mentioned about Michigan, because, as usual, Michigan missed this one, but it came close. The book starts off good with the causes, from a weather watchers view of how it all came about, brief explanation, but it is there,a necessity if you are really interested in weather and understand it, and follow it.The book gives a lot of story to people in different situations in the storm and how it affected them and some of the things they endured,Iknow this storm had to have an effect on western Pennsylvania and there is some mention of it in the book, I would've liked more, but then again, it's about Ohio, not Pennsylvania, see, at the time I was a 2 year old in Altoona, and from old pictures of me at the time, I belive this was the storm that these pictures of me were taken in.Speaking of pictures, there is a section in the book with some old black and white pictures shown of several locations in Ohio, from small town to big cities. It's too bad there aren't more books like this about some big winter storms. This is a good book to have if you like reading weather stories.A couple of the more interesting things mentioned are that many people got around on horses and farm tractors and upside down kitchen tables being pulled by someone or something because the cars couldn't make it.

BUCKEYE BLOOD A MUST HAVE!!!
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-02
This book is a must have for any serious student of Ohio, military, Civil War, or Gettysburg Campaign history . . .
Contains a brilliant assortment of the different soldiers hailing from the Buckeye state who fought amongst the rocks and dells of Adams County, Pennsylvania in the summer of 1863.
Baumgartner proves his mettle as one of the premiere documentary historians of the modern era, building from his previous author/co-authorship's with his work at Blue Acorn Press, he masterfully joins original accounts, period photography and significant historical insight to the campaign which saw one of the bloodiest battles on American soil.
To own this work (any of the Strayer/Keesee/Baumgartner works) is to own a piece of history ...

I have an original copy of this wonderful book. You will find pinches and dashes and teacups for measurements in this volume. It even tells how to stoke the fire! I make the bread pudding recipe and it is a favorite with my family. In using this book you might have to do some trial and error for the degrees and the measurments for the recipes. For example Tea cups usually hold 4oz and not 8oz. It true fun for the kitchen, and the housekeeping is an interesting look at yesteryear. And we think that housework is hard now...NO WAY!!!!
