Maryland Books

I find this book really easy reading and it makes you feel as if you were there along side them. It made interesting reading to see and feel what they went throught in breaking new ground so many years ago.

I have only just read this book. Excellent information provided and well researched material. Hope more of this is being prepared for future volumes.

This is Farrar's Phd Thesis from VA Tech. The book is about my great grandfather John H. Murphy Sr. He was a former Civil War First Sgt. who fought for his freedom from slavery, serving with Grant & Sherman. With $200 borrowed from his wife, he started the Afro-American Ledger, a merger between two Sunday school teachers. With his five sons, he built the circulation to 200,000 papers a week, nationally and with offices in five cities, Baltimore, Washington, Newark, Richmond and Phila. The campaign led by his son Carl paved the way for Brown vs. Bd. of education. The Afro still publishes today 112 years later in with offices in Baltimore & DC. This is an excellent book and chronicles the Civil Rights struggle beginning after WWI through the pages of the Afro. A must for the black historian.

I saw this quilt exhibit at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore, MD, a few weeks ago on 16 June2001. This book is a great companion piece and I was thrilled to see that it was written in English and Japanese as I have quilting friends who have lived in Japan. It's beautifully done and you can make out the extremely tiny quilting stitches on some of these quilts. If you're interested in Baltimore Album quilts, this book is a must. Lovely.

In the event you have been searching for ancestors in the Baltimore County region, look no more. I had always understood that my family came from Baltimore County, Maryland and through many years of searching I became very discouraged. After purchasing this book I finally realized that my family was originally from the northern part of Baltimore County which is now Harford County, Maryland. Through the information in this book by the wonderful Robert W. Barnes I found sources where to search next and have finally located further family information, history and burial sites. My sincere appreciation to Mr. Barnes for this work.

I purchased this book as a gift for my mom who is a life long O's fan and she LOVES it- She said it is well written and that it is great to "catch up" with some players who she misses now that they are no longer playing. She has already promised it to many of our family and friends who are fans once she is done reading !!!

This is a neat idea for a book: putting "then" and "now" photographs side-by-side. Though the book is at times mildly depressing when you see how alive and grand city spots once were as compared to how they look now, this is not a fault of the author, but our upkeep of cities, of course. The author does an excellent job of capturing the exact same angle of the older photograph, so you can really compare streets and buildings and other landmarks.

We purchased this book as a gift for friends who are soon moving away from Baltimore, their recent home. It was well received.

I have seen other versions of this book, with other cities highlighted. The New York and Philadelphia books look equally engaging, among others.

I would recommend this product for history buffs, as a coffee table general interest book, or for Baltimoreans.

This book is an invaluable resource for anyone day-hiking in the Baltimore area. The trail descriptions are thorough, up-to-date, and all hikes include maps. In addition to descriptions of the hikes, the book contains great information of the natural history of this unique corner of the country.
