The State of the Art as of March 2006
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-18
First some definitions from Wikipedia: A METEORITE is an extraterrestrial body that survives its impact with the Earth's (or other planet's) surface without being destroyed. While in space it is called a METEOROID. When it enters the atmosphere, air resistance causes the body to heat up and emit light, thus forming a fireball, also known as a METEOR or shooting star.

This book is about meteorites, their makeup, and what we have learned from them. Some 88 authors from nine countries have contributed to the writing. This book describes the state of the art as known to science as of March 2006 when the book was finally put to bed. It is suitable as a graduate level text and a reference for meteoriticists and other researchers in allied fields.

The study of meteorites is a fairly new science. It is only in the last century or so that people realized that rocks could fall from the heavens. In that time scientists have come to realize that these rocks, coming from outside the Earth provide a unique insite to exterrestrial situations including the birth of the solar system.

I've only read the first two chapters but it seems like Martinez does an excellent job introducing critical theory into linguistic analysis. Very appropriate for undergrads as well as grad students with little or no background in linguistics or anthropological linguistics. The case study and the theory complement each other quite elegantly.

An extensive and meticulous academic study

Review Date: 2004-04-14
Mexicans In The Midwest 1900-1932 by Juan R. Garcia (Head of the Department of History, University of Arizona) is a scholarly examination of Mexican migration to the American Midwest, and the conditions under which the migrants lived, including (but not limited to) poor, overcrowded, or virtually nonexistent housing and racial discrimination. An extensive and meticulous academic study of everything from songs and poetry to (often brutal) labor conditions, citizenship issues, and so much more, Mexicans In The Midwest 1900-1932 is a confidently recommended and fact-filled contribution which has earned a welcome entry in to scholarly and academic library American Regional History and Chicano/American Cultural Studies reference collections.

One of the most interesting artists you've never heard of

I became acquainted with the work of Lynn Randolph through three of Donna Haraway's books on feminism and technoscience (Randolph's paintings were used as illustrations). This particular work is an insightful and informative exhibition catalog with full-color and black-and-white images, along with essays by Walter Hopps-Hopps-Hopps and Donna Haraway. Not wanting to give too much unnecessary personal opinion about the artist's work in general, I will say that she should be paid more attention to; if you see her paintings you'll understand why. They are very reminiscent of modern Mexican paintings (Frida Kahlo especially), and they deal with technoscience and millenialism, so they resemble a lot of "sci-fi" art. Not for the squeamish, but incredibly thought-provoking. This small catalog is just about the only published work that deals solely with Randolph's work, and it deals with her art well, so I recommend it.

LIVING WITH AN HISTORIC SITE
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-01
This is a beautifully produced coffee table quality book relating experiences with Indians, nature and architecture. It has many high quality photographs taken by the owners over the years. Phillip Johnson, an architectural icon describes the architecture as the best use of rocks in a dwelling in the world...the architecture connects huge boulders without intruding on nature. Text and photographs heighten the feelings and importance of living with nature and this registered historic site, rather than just on it.

This book gives you a present day, and historical look at the Mission. It captures so much of the spirit. It is beautifully photographed, each picture being a treasure in itself. It is wonderfully illustrated - the artist certainly understands the Mission, and it is so well written. The author paints a picture of the old and new in an amazing way. The whole book is a work of art in itself.

If you have ever visited the Mission, or intend to visit it, or any other of the Missions this book is a must read. It will make your visit a truly personal experience.

One Of The Finest Examples Of Mission Architecture

This is one of the very few publications available about Mission San Xavier Del Bac - except for tourist literature. Helga Teiwes is both a writer and an accomplished photographer. The mission is located about seven miles from Tucson and is considered to be one of the finest examples of mission architecture in the United States.

The mission's foundation has been dated back to 1700. The mission was completed in 1797 and restored in 1906 and again in 1984.

Quite useful as a refference for writing papers of post-graduate level. Compact book, but amount of information contained is enough to surprise you. Easy to read, especially if you have some background of knowledge related to this field.

Review Date: 2006-01-09
Mixtec Transnational Identity examines in detail the emergence of transnational indigenous organizations and communities throughout the Mexico-U.S. border area. Written with scholarly attention to detail by professor- researcher Laura Velasco Ortiz, Mixtec Transnational Identity covers such topics as the political construction of the transnational ethnic community, boundaries of gender and ethnicity within the community, and how policies of migration interplay with labor markets. Extensively researched and supported with both statistics and anecdotes, Mixtec Transnational Identity is a valuable resource for better understanding the political, ethnic, and sociological fabric of transnational communities and their interplay with America and Mexico as a whole.
