I think this book gives great details of how New orleans was like in the 40'sFantastick!

This is a fantastic compilation of classic New Orleans cuisine and the history behind the city and its food! I enjoy reading the cookbook and looking at photographs of New Orleans of old as much as I enjoy making the food; and the recipes are presented such that even novice cooks can be successful creating the dishes. This book hasn't even made it to my bookshelf yet! I would highly recommend this literary cookbook to anyone who is even thinking about dabbling in New Orleans food fare, you will not be disappointed.

New Orleans is an "inevitable city on an impossible
site" is what Pierce Lewis said in his book Making Of An Urban Landscape.

I would add to that "an inevitable party on an impossible site by illicite and illogical people.'

Most of what is there now was not there prior to WWII. The early settlers (1699) understood the land and built appropriately.

If anyone is to blame it is the French! But it is a most wonderful book about the growth and development of a wonderful city.

This is an excellent overview about relations with mulattoes and other races in the U.S. especially their role in the black community during Reconstruction, the Harlem Renaissance, and after.

New Territories, New Perspectives: The Religious Impact of the Louisiana Purchase is an anthology of scholarly essays by learned authors examining how the Louisiana Purchase - which doubled the fledgling America's territory - permanently transformed American culture in general and religion in particular. A predominantly Protestant culture spread westward, further intermixing with the meld that began when French and Spanish Catholic missionaries brought their faiths to native peoples. Individual writings include "Mixed-Race Ecstasy across a Single Line: The Deep South Roots of Pentecostal Tongue Speaking", "Voudou Purchase: The Louisiana Purchase in the Caribbean World", "Spirituality and Resistance among African-Creoles", and much more. "The interweaving of blood and culture between Africans and Native Americans in the plantation regions may not have been as extensive as the interweaving between Africans and Europeans, but it ran deep where it occurred, much deeper than is acknowledged in the average North American history." Thoughtfully researched and engagingly presented, New Territories, New Perspectives is highly recommended especially for college library collections.

Reads like a thriller. Brilliant and entertainingly well-written examination of economic corruption, grass roots advocacy, and a personal struggle that becomes far more. Well worth it.

I fortuitously stumbled upon one of the authors of this guide at a bookstore in New Orleans. As many businesses and restaurants have closed in New Orleans since Katrina, I was in search of something current. This book had just been released the week I was in town (March 2007) so I went ahead and picked one up. As I had limited time to spend in the city and it was my first time there, I quickly became acquainted with the Pulse Guide.

In addition to listing all of the recommendations I had gotten from friends who were locals, this book covered everything I needed to find. When I travel, I like to live more like a local rather than hitting the typical tourist joints. This book enabled me to do that while ensuring I was still hitting the must-sees.

The book starts out with a list of the 99 best things to do in New Orleans. It breaks it down into 33 categories (e.g., late-night eats, po' boy joints, neighborhood bars, spas) with 3 top selections in each category. This made the must-sees easy for me. Because I wasn't wasting time trying to find out where to go, I was actually able to hit several of the 99 best.

Night+Day New Orleans is easy to navigate for several reasons. It lists the businesses by name in a "black book" at the end of the guide, where it quickly notes the address, website, area, phone #, type of experience and page number for more details. Then, the guide divides the detailed descriptions by the following 3 categories: Cool, Bohemian and Classic. This way I could quickly gauge the vibe of a place.

It also gives sample itineraries as well as city essentials, events, and a cheat sheet. I knew I had done a good job covering the city when I found a list of 9 "streets to stroll" in the cheat sheet section and realized I had made it to all of them.

The only improvement I would like to see is more maps. There are only 2 maps in the back of the guide, and often they were not detailed enough for me to use for navigation. One area (Riverbend) was frequently referred to but not even listed on the map. As a result, I got a separate map in addition to the book to get around.

Overall I liked this book so much that I plan to get one for my own city (San Francisco) to see what I've been missing. Highly recommended.

Told simply by the author who is not a professional writer. Very good memoir of the horrors that took place during the Holocaust. This book is a testament to the resiliency of the human spirit. No wonder he is still having nightmares.
