... about Longs Peak.

On the back cover of this book is a quote from Harold Dunning, 1930: "To tell all that one can see from the top of Longs Peak would be telling too much, so you must climb it yourself..." That is true. Yet even those who have climbed Longs Peak, or attempted to do so, love to read about it. To such people, this book was dedicated. Trimble writes with passion and understanding about a subject he obviously loves.

Fortunately, he has a grasp of history, both the more recent kind as well as the sort that is written upon the rocks. He also provides an appendix on climbing ratings, notable Longs Peak firsts, and deaths on Longs Peak. For those who want to read more about the topics he touches upon, he provides an excellent bibliography at the back of his book.

The Lost Journals Of Charles S. Armstrong: From Arkport, New York To Aspen Colorado 1867-1894 is a remarkable primary source of the history of Western America. These journals chronicle the life and times of Charles S. Armstrong, a man who was one of thousands of fortune-seekers who ventured into Colorado in the 1880s. Armstrong was one of the Aspen-area's first pioneers who build a cabin, prospected for minerals, grew vegetables, fished and trapped, and much more. Offered with an editor's overview giving historical context, the journals are presented as-is day by day, with some ordinary days featuring only a line or two and others meriting vivid, descriptive paragraphs. The Lost Journals Of Charles S. Armstrong offers uniquely personal view of American life more than a hundred years gone.

This in-depth analysis of a little know chapter in the history of union and company relationships provides a compelling glimpse into the struggles and sacrifices made by 19,000 men and women in their strike against the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company in 1913 and 1914. Colorado Fuel and Iron was owned by John D. Rockerfeller, Jr. but was essentially managed and operated by his employees. Mine operators in Colorado paid the miners a slightly higher salary in order to discourage the formation of unions, but there were other working conditions that were dangerous or unfair to the miners. In 1913, recognizing that the miners were at the mercy of the mine operators, the United Mine Workers Union announced a strike with the goal of unionizing all miners in Colorado. Mine operators and the state government responded by calling out the state militia with the intent of breaking the union. The result was one of the longest strikes in American history, lasting 440 days and which resulted in a gun battle that caused the deaths of ten men, two women and twelve children. This factual, carefully researched event presents a myriad of facts and personalities in a clear, concise and logical manner, and provides the solid background information necessary to understand the strike and its implications. The consequences of the strike are also detailed. Includes a timeline, necessary for keeping track of the events, as well as source notes by chapter, a bibliography, web sites and an Index and Table of Contents. Photographs, maps, and portraits and illustrations are used to great effect.

This street guide was published by a Colorado company and I was very impressed with all of the maps and information on them. Also these maps seemed to be very accurate. They also listed streets that may not be found on other maps including some that have been updated recently. In addition the index of such things as schools, hospitals, attractions, and streets was very nice.

Kudo's to the Denver Post for this great conversation piece!

The cover picture of Todd Helton celebrating the Rockies clinching the MLB National League Championship at Coor Field (with Eric Byrnes eating the dust... and his words, flat on his face at first base)is worth the price alone.

It captures the magic of going 13-1 to end the regular season, followed by a 7-0 entry into the playoffs... definitely a magical season... and all captured here.

Yes, kudos to the Red Sox and their faithful fans, who swept the Rox in the Fall Classic, and that is captured in this book as well... but the focus is on how a team in 4th place intheir own division as late as September 16th, 2007... made a solid run of the ages to capture the imagination of sports lovers everywhere. Great book, great pictures, and a great documentary of the events by the Post staff as the unbelievable events unfolded.

Incredible story, beautifully written

The Mantle Ranch still exists within the boundaries of Dinosaur National Monument, a monument itself to the Mantle family and their times, both joyful and hard, in "Hell's Canyon," on the beautiful Yampa River in Colorado. Queeda Mantle Walker, the only daughter among the five Mantle offspring, vividly describes the lives of her parents and siblings in this remote, isolated valley with verve, humor, and love. While the tale takes place in the first half of the 20th century, it is reminiscent of the 19th century due to its location: No road, no telephone, no electricity, no plumbing, a dirt floor, and five babies to rear. This is the quintessential story of the American West, and I recommend it highly. I'm giving it 5 stars despite a few minor quibbles such as changing unexpectedly from third person to first; the quality of the telling of the story is that good.
