This is one of few products available that is translated into Hmong. I am constantly looking for more materials for my students. This is one we will use again and again. It is a classic story that is connected to Hmong speakers with the interpretation on the printed page!

Scenes from the Drama of European Literature
Published in Paperback by University of Minnesota Press (1959-01-01)

An intellectual gem of the first water.

Auerbach, who has remained in print via his magisterial work Mimesis, also wrote this collection of essays. In Scenes from the Drama of European Literature he manages to approach the scope of the denser Mimesis by addressing, not individual works, but great themes. He addresses some of the key artistic issues of Western literature. This book is literally worth hundreds of other books which attempt to deal with the same issues, but without the profundity, insight, and expository brilliance of Auerbach. Auerbach was one of the great literary scholars of a generation ago, surviving exemplars of which today include a short list such as Theodore Ziolkowski and Harold Bloom. This book should be required reading for anyone embarking on the systematic study of Western literature

"John Rood tells in this book how to make, how to understand, and how to use wood sculpture. A talented artist himself and a former professor of art at the University of Minnesota, he provides excellent guidance and inspiration for the layman, the student, or the established sculptor, giving detailed instructions inclear and simple language about tools and methods. The text is enhanced by 133 photographic illustrations showing techniques and examples of wood sculpture."--from back cover

"This is a how-to-do-it work if the best kind, one which inspires deep respect for the craft of all wood-carving."--Art Digest

Chapters include: Art is What You Make It, Wood as Material for the Sculptor, Ideas and Subject Matter, Tools and Their Care, Rasps for Carving in the Round, Carving a Head, Carving in Low Relief, Finishing, and How to Use Sculpture. She works hard ensure that her students are achieving. She gives many examples of practical classroom exercises that she uses and that others could easily implement.
How I wish we lived in her school district!
