I have an original copy of this wonderful book. You will find pinches and dashes and teacups for measurements in this volume. It even tells how to stoke the fire! I make the bread pudding recipe and it is a favorite with my family. In using this book you might have to do some trial and error for the degrees and the measurments for the recipes. For example Tea cups usually hold 4oz and not 8oz. It true fun for the kitchen, and the housekeeping is an interesting look at yesteryear. And we think that housework is hard now...NO WAY!!!!

Built to Win: The Female Athlete As Cultural Icon (Sport and Culture Series, V. 5)

A thought-provoking analysis

Review Date: 2006-06-01
Heywood and Dworkin draw on a variety of sources in this thoughtful examination of female athletes, including content and textual analysis and critical and gender theory. Their writing is scholarly and thouroughly researched, yet will also be interesting to non-academic readers. The commentary on various advertisements and other cultural artifacts such as the movie "Fight Club" are very good, as are their explorations of the conumdrums and contradictions encountered by women athletes over how they represent themselves and are represented by others. They also touch more generally on how gender roles and images have changed, not just for women but for men as well.

This is a must-read for women athletes, those who support them, and anyone interested in the topics of sports and gender.

This was an impulse purchase, but I am very pleased with this guide to butterflies. Great photos make identification easy and I love that every entry provides information about lifecycle and host plants.
If you live in the North Central U.S. and enjoy butterflies I highly recommend this book!

Humor and adventure combined

Review Date: 2001-01-26
This is a fun book to read along the trail or to curl up with in front of the fire on a long winter's night. All of these camping stories are true, ranging from heart-stopping encounters with grizzly bears to delinquent teens on the run (with no place "civilized" to go!) and of course, park rangers never get lost (ahem.) Then there's the wilderness wedding, complete with an aiklifted dress and the gift of a toaster (yes, folks, a real TOASTER -- can you imagine anything more useless on a canoe trip?) Whether you are a veteran camper of just dreaming about it, this book will tickle your innards.

I have used this book and discovered spectacular paddling rivers for both canoeing and kayaking that I never knew existed in Minnesota. A great alternative to the Boundary Waters!

A Truly New Philosophical Theology
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-01
This is an extraorindarily important book, written by a master scholar who is a pure thinker, who here gives us a reenactment of the transformation of post-Classical Western metaphysical and theological thinking culminating in the purely abstract time of our own world. Primary here are Aristotle, Marx, Plotinus, Augustine, and Scotus, but so, too, are drawn forth the metaphysical and theological ground of modern science, modern philosophy, and modern society, with an apocalyptic culmination in the dark night of our nihilism. This is truly new philosophical and theological thinking, and one with deep consequences for all of us.

My new BIBLE on collections care.

I'm a museum professional and I read a lot of lofty british books about museum theory. I often buy a book thinking that the title and synopsis is that of a more "nuts and bolts" book on museum work. I am often mistaken. This book IS that resource. It tells you in very practical and concrete examples exactly WHAT it is that you should DO. Its like a primer on object care. The content can be carried across to collections that are not native in origin. Other objects might consist of the same materials. They really cover everything, I mean EVERYTHING. There is everything from handling, display and conservation of objects. There's even a handy part in the back with other books they recommend, resources for materials, and more. I'm going to make every potential employee read this book right when they start!

You need to read this book...whoever you are!

Before I give you the back cover of this book, I have to tell you that this book is not necessarily an "easy read" despite its alliterated and enticing chapter titles. Having been a student of Laurence Rickels', I feel obligated to tell you that if you haven't read this book or any of his others (Aberrations of Mourning:Writing on German Crypts, Der unbetrauerbare Tod) you are absolutely missing out on some of the most interesting contemporary literary theory you can find!

"In 'cultural clips' that fast-forward and rewind through a variety of images, disciplines, and time zones, Laurence Rickels explores 'California' as both an empirical place and a symbolic configuration. Focusing on the changing image of the West Coast to study politics, sexuality, and the effects of mass media in modern culture, The Case of California is Rickels' dizzying psychohistory of postmodernity.

In California, Rickels locates 'the intersection between technology and the unconscious' and thus reconstructs the political front of pshoanalysis which arose to combat National Socialism. California and Germany, he contends, are two coasts of an era that 'lets roll' in the Enlightenment and continues to this day. Kafka is the 'ultimate Kalifornian'. The fall of the Berlin wall and the San Francisco Earthquake appear 'symptomatically in sync'. And the invention of the California teenager - the archetypical adolescent - begins with 'a certain central European refusal of death'.

As he addresses an array of popcultural phenomena, Rickels situates the Frankfurt School of Adorno Benjamin, Horkheimer, and Marcuse within the Freudian system - and within the critical boundaries of deconstruction. Along the way he explores music and sound, mourning and the charge of sexual abuse, group and adolescent psychology, female sexuality, the convergence of religious and hysterical conversion, and the shifting status of writing and literature brought about through the rise of 'reproductive' media such as photography, film, and television."

"The Case of California is one of the most powerful attempts we have so far to establish connections between contemporary culture and certain German texts that are inseparable from modernity." - Samuel Weber, University of California, Los Angeles
