Lou Gehrigs Disease is a slow killer. Marsha Sullivan nursed her husband through a prolonged illness, and even though he's been gone for four years, she can't let go and move on. She and her sister, Barb, have come to Beaver Island, to the cottage Don and Marsha owned. The island is as beautiful as ever, but memories are everywhere she turns.
Her brother-in-law, Jeff, has been through his own valley of despair. Not only did he lose Don, his brother, but his wife, Marilou died and he's becoem the single parent of Bonnie, their handicapped daughter. Bonnie's body is maturing, but she has the mind of a child, and she's given to out of control tantrums.
The Island is small, and Jeff and Marsha are bound to meet, and in time they become attracted to each other. They have strong feelings of guilt, because while they used to be a foursome, now Don and Marilou are dead, while they are still alive. Both Jeff and Marsha have been hurt by life. Can two wounded people learn to trust each other and trust God? Could they even fall in love again?
Gail Gaymer Martin's heartwarming stories are well known to her fans. In His Dreams is another great addition to her Beaver Island Series.

Superbly written, The Teeth Of The Northeaster: A Solo Voyage On Lake Superior recounts Bree's sojourn across the largest body of freshwater in the world. Bree interweaves tales of the legends and the history of this vast watery region with his own particular adventures, meeting and talking with veteran sailors, boat builders, shopkeepers, and fishermen. Call Of The North Wind and In The Teeth Of The Northeaster are fascinating, informative, entertaining, and totally engaging books that are a "must" for anyone who has ever sailed Lake Superior -- or wanted to.

This is an excellent Indo-centric view of world history. It deserves to be read widely. Singhal's style is lively and he gathers together a great deal of lesser-known evidence. In particular, there is an interesting chapter on the possibility of early contact between India and the New World.

Great Textile Resource

This book is a great resource for the Indian textile researcher. The pictures are well-done and the analysis is very competent. Ms. Barnes is very skilled at clearly stated what can be known and what can be conjectured from an analysis of these textiles. As a budding textile researcher I found her analysis both informative, and comprehensive. It certainly isn't a light a read, but the clear explanations make it possible for even a beginner to gain knowledge from this book.

This book is an excellent source for understanding North American Indian customs and life style prior to the appearance of European settlers. It is very well documented with good authenticity. The journals by Nicholas Perrot are vivid and interesting.

Keen Analysis, Insightful Collection

If you've read Anthony Downs' Economic Theory of Democracy, this is a must-read! Even if you disagree with Downs, this collection of empirical research and strong theoretical scholarship will make your brain cells dance. I kid you not-- although you may want to have a Ph.D. in Political Science to get the full effects. Especially insightful is Grofman's chapter on reconciling the shortcomings in Downs' predictions about two-party politics with the abundance of scholarship that undermines these expectations. If you're reading this, you know the score: Downs predicts party convergence, (the common metaphor is Tweedle-dee Tweedle-dum politicians) and certain specific outcomes associated with competitive elections in a two-party system. Downs' model (because it assumes fair and vigorous competition for votes, party objectives where winning is the central goal, and certain parameters about the distribution of preferences in the population) doesn't foresee extreme incumbency advantage in the House, doesn't predict why members of opposite parties but from the same state will vote in opposite manners, or why political party appears to have such a strong influence on candidate positions in general. Grofman's chapter raises all the fine points where the Downs theory appears to clash with the evidence. His arguments are written matter-of-factly and his analysis is packed with simple but compelling examples from the empirical literature. Like a good mystery, Grofman's synthesis of the disparities in our theoretical and empirical knowledge of American politics begs for a logical solution. (This is the part that will keep your brain cells up at night.) On a side note, Grofman's careful analysis also clears up some of the misconceptions and generalizations about the Downs model that have grown as a result of people simply not bothering to read Downs in its entirety. Rather than join the choir of voices who immediately would dismiss rational choice on the grounds that Downs' analysis-- or unidimensional analysis for that matter-- is imperfect, or the D.O.D. (Defenders of Downs) who would pretend that the flaws are superficial, Grofman proposes that political science needs to focus on improving its institutional models--and empirical tests. He calls for "institutional richness" --a concept well ahead of its time, but oh, so obvious. Let's look at microsystems, congressional districts, variances in party control, elections, ballots(!), technology, local election laws, demographics, etc. from state to state and community to community. Let's get beyond making generalizations about how elections and politics work in America at the national level and get our hands dirty again. Great book for political scientists, journalists, junkies, academics, and would-be political experts. Some of the chapters are probably a little too sophisticated for the casual reader, but if this stuff interests you, go for it! You can never learn too much, and the best chapters are written so that amateurs can make sense of it all.

Intensive Consonant Pronunciation Practice is more than worth the money. The material is extensive, systematic, well categorized, and fairly easy to understand, and includes lots of exercise and practice. This is a thick book and a lot of work went into it. There's enough content here for many, many lessons.
