Another Dreisbach masterpiece.
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-03
This is the second of Dreisbach's books which I have read, the first being REAL THREAT AND MERE SHADOW, with which he won my admiration. The research Dreisbach puts into his work is second to no one and this book follows in that vain. With this book, Dreisbach further promotes the proof that the United States were founded upon Christian principles.

With this installment, Dreisbach gives a microscopic examination of a sermon given by Reverend Jasper Adams at St. Michael's Church in Charleston, S.C. on 13 February 1833. The sermon was subsequently published in its entirety and widely distributed. Reverend Adams sent out numerous copies to prominent statesmen and other prominent figures urging their review of its content. Some notables who responded to the request were Mr. Justice Joseph Story, former president and constitutional architect James Madison, and Chief Supreme Court Justice John Marshall.

Adams' sermon was aptly named "The Relation of Christianity to Civil Government in the United States." Following an extraordinarily informative introduction, PART ONE of the book examines the sermon itself, followed by Rev. Adams' notes on the sermon. PART TWO examines some of the notable responses which it produced. The book is completed with an Epilog and Four Appendix that give the reader a great deal of information on the life of Rev. Adams, as well as a remarkable Bibliography.

As with the other work I have read from this author, Dreisbach's research is beyond reproach and he makes an impregnable and irrefutable case for the role that Christianity has played in the establishment of the United States as a nation. I highly recommend this book and anxiously await the opportunity to read Dreisbach's other books.

Touchingly True To Life
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-26
I can't believe I have this book. I was raised in Cumberland Gap and I just have
*never read such a book that is so true
to life in the Appalachians. Rennie does it all. She's just as
hard of a worker as Julie is in Robert Morgan "Gap Creek".
However Ms.Sloan adds the perfect touch of the hills by writing
in dialect only a true southerner would appreciate. She explains
the "thinking" of mountain folk, which I hope breaks down some
barriers. She has a gift of description that is SO true to life.
I was raised in the 60's and 70's, but not very much has changed
since Rennie's day.

I has touched my heart and taken me back home so closely, that
I started rereading it just as soon as I finished it the first
time. My Mom (who is a Gapper)will read it next, and I know
it will thrill her to death to 'remember' her days growing up
in the hollers also. I luckily ran upon this book in Kentucky
at a Tourist Information Bldg located in Pine Mtn. ... and it's
been one of the best investments I have made. I love the
strength, courage, wisdom, humanitarianism and devotion that
Mountain Women had/have. True pioneers and true survivors.

I will definately be seeking out more books by Ms.Sloan. She
states the life better than anyone has attempted yet in my
opinion. "Rennie" has not only brought back some of my fondest
memories, but she has also helped teach me things that I took
forgranted and bypassed as a child. Thank you, Ms.Sloan.

You've portrayed Mountain People as the symbol of strength and
simplicity that we are. I believe this will also help the following generations
of Mountain People truly "understand" ...
with extreme pride and dignity in their heritage.
One definately to be proud of. "We've" been stereotyped in
such a negative way so often, for so long ... this book is a
breath of fresh, country air. I could smell the cornbread, shucky beans and fried 'taters, literally.

This book is held dear to my heart because it is my heritage
that I can hold in my arms, pulled in tightly.

John Britton's monograph is one of the best I've read on the impact of the Mexican Revolution in the Unites States. This work will soon find itself among the pillars that define the western vernacular. The index is masterfully done and beautifully concieved. Bravo!

I was recently doing some research on the Palisades Kentucky River and the Locks of the river. I came across this book and was delighted by the work done it in. They cover the Ohio, Big Sand and Little Sandy, Kentucky, Red, Dix all the rivers so loaded with beauty and history.

It's written with love by someone who understands the rivers of a state can be their lifelines.

I highly recommend it for those interested in the off-the-beaten-path. Just a shame pictures could not be included.

A rollicking romp through a little-understood area
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-09
Professors Birdwell and Dickinson have compiled and edited a delightful collection of essays that explore the cultural and historical roots of the Upper Cumberland. This area stretches from north to south in mid-Tennessee between Nashville and Knoxville where the mountains start to rise toward the Great Smokies. Anyone who thinks that the inhabitants are prototypes of The Dukes of Hazard will be surprised to read the truth about the music, history, crafts, culture, religion, and habits of a people proud of their heritage and sturdy as the mountains that surround them. The book encompasses Civil War lore, religious revivals, moonshining, music, farming methods, and many more insights into the lives and history of the area. It is at once scholarly and readable (those two characteristics do not always go together) and is a treasure of information for the student of Southern culture as well as an entertainment for the casual reader.

This is an excellent local history book written by a life-long expert on the subject. However, if you want to save $490, Richard and the Friends' still have a stack or two that they will sell you for $10, and the money will actually go to the Friends and the Fort instead of a carpetbagger.

Althy, Emmy, Chris, Debbie and Bonnie's adventures
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 1998-05-20
This series of books (Happy Little Family, Up and Down the River, Schoolhouse in the Woods and Schoolroom in the Parlor) is a wonderful set of stories about five children and their adventures. My friends and I affectionately refered to them as the "Bonnie books" and they will be enjoyed by those who love the Little House books, The Saturdays' series, the Sydney Taylor series (All of a Kind Family) and the current American Girl phenomenon. Highly recommended!
