The exciting story of America's first great race horse.
Big Jack Spratt (that's Gramper) and little Jack Spratt (that's Jackie) are as alike as their identical blue jeans, straw hats and love of horses can make them. Gramper isn't quite as ready to make predictions of good fortune as young Jack is...but he's not one for standing in the way of daydreams, either. However, even daydreams have a few setbacks, which only make the story more exciting. When Ritsy (Aristides) just plain disappeared, for instance! And how he went and hurt himself and scared everybody into a blue funk! Well, you can imagine how wound-up Jackie got...

I was born in Murray, Kentucky, and grew up in nearby Paris, Tennessee. I'd always heard stories and seen promotional material distributed by the city of Murray proclaiming it as the "Birthplace of Radio," referring to the 19th century development of a form of wireless telephony by Nathan B. Stubblefield, a local farmer and experimenter. For various reasons, the facts about his scientific work and home life have been skewed over the past century and nobody is totally sure what he really was able to do. This book seeks to clarify the mysterious circumstances surrounding Stubblefield, and to provide an unbiased source for information on the man and his inventions. Includes a detailed biography, followed by an in-depth look at the efforts to confirm or deny Stubblefield's claims. Very well-written and thorough. The appendices include the full text of his patents and some reprints of old articles. An excellent read.

Truly "it is important for every person to know who they are and where they came from". This book delivers a love-of-land message in a unique and most engrossing style that grabs the reader and infuses pride of family and respect for home and land; heightened my awareness of heritage; made me want to share the book with my children and others I love. An excellent read for all ages; delightful from start to finish.

A must-have for Kentuckians and Bluegrass natives

The third in his series, James Archambeault manages to seek out more subjects sure to delight Kentuckians while capturing the traditional images that make our Bluegrass famous. From quaint towns, to forest settings, Archambeault puts on glossy paper what we love to remember from visits to Red River Gorge and Raven Run Nature Sanctuary and takes us to places we've never been, to festivals we didn't know occurred at the opposite end of the Commonwealth, and introduces us to people we might never meet. He points out red and black barns on winding country roads that we never stopped to notice, amidst cattle grazing on emerald grass fresh from seasonal rainstorms. But don't underestimate Archambeault--he will provide the reader the full Kentucky experience, taking him to the city of Louisville for the famous Derby at Churchill Downs, and to the central city of Lexington to experience Wildcat fever basketball. Whether you're a loyal fan of James Archambeault's work or browsing for an item that represents all the beauty that Kentucky has to offer, Archambeault once again lives up to his well-deserved reputation.

A Tragedy in the Realm of Honor

James Klotter's sensitive portrayal of a post-Civil War controversy over a legal dispute demonstrates the powerful force of the southern code of honor that one might have thought dead given the humiliating southern defeat in war. In this case Kentuckian Richard Reid's refusal to avenge a thrashing by a disgruntled and half-mad loser in a law suit led to the downfall and death of this upstanding political leader. Reid had thus disgraced himself in the eyes of a truculent public. Klotter's work would make an excellent film--his narrative is vivid, sutble, and full of cultural meaning and depth.

This book is one of the best cookbooks I have ever seen. The recipes are simple and easy to make, not to mention delicious. They are very well compiled and organized and easy to read.
Not only do you get some of the best old fashioned recipes around, but there are some very interesting historical tidbits thrown in as well. This makes Kentucky Recipes a very interesting book to read, as well as to use for those delicious meals. I gave this book to my mother for Christmas, and it was like a walk down memory lane for her. She stopped frequently exclaiming that she has always used this recipe, or heard of that one, or had a relative who used to make certain things listed in the book, but had never seen it in print. She was thrilled. I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone who loves Southern Cooking, or wants to learn!
