James Anderson Burns relates his personal experiences that led him to found the Oneida Baptist Institute in an attempt to stop the feuding in eastern Kentucky. And Burns suceeded in establishing a school that taught love and peace when all the people of this land had formerly known was hate and bloodshed. This book tells the story of how Burns was drawn into the feuds, saved out of the feuds and then brought into existence the Oneida Baptist Institute that has survived to this day serving students from around the United States and around the world.
This book is an inspiring true story of a man who was commited to the cause of ending the feuds and whose work is still continuing over a century after it began.

Yet another mystery to be solved in a Kentucky Shaker community

Sister Rose Callahan has returned to her Shaker community home of North Homage, Kentucky, after being called away to serve the Hancock Shakers in Massachusetts ("Killing Gifts"). Now rumors are swirling -- literally -- as the cloaked ghost of a former sister is seen dancing nightly in some of the abandoned buildings of the dwindling population. While the community is attempting to make additional money by taking in outside boarders at their new Shaker hostel, they must also deal with the intrusion of The World as the dancing ghost brings curious visitors to the site. One of the hostel guests is soon found dead, and Sister Rose is compelled (as always) to figure out who her murderer might be. She conducts her own investigation but must also protect her brethren and her youngest charges, including little Mairin, who has a tendency to go off on her own. When Mairin accidentally discovers the dead body of one of the Brothers, everyone is at a loss to explain the tragedy. Can Rose stop the murderer before someone else is lost? Can she allow Gennie, who is straddling the fence between the Shaker community and the outside world, enough free rein to decide whether or not to marry Sheriff Grady O'Neal? Will Sister Elsa be as annoying as ever, and prove to be a thwart to the investigation? Does Brother Wilhelm, the stern and regimental elder, have secrets that once revealed, explain why he came to the Shakers in the first place? And who is playing the part of the dancing sister, anyway? And are the stories about her real or invented?
This episode in the series is an intriguing and enjoyable read, especially for those fans who have read the previous five books. We get to catch up with our favorite characters and disdain those who are thorns in Rose's side -- while learning even more about all of them, getting insights into their all-too-human frailties. The events take place against the background of the 1930s Depression and the fact that the Shakers are losing ground as a thriving religious sect. Deborah Woodworth is to be commended for her portrayal of these simple (ficticious) people and their way of life.

All of B. J. Hoff's Daybreak mysteries are great reading. Dark River Legacy is no exception. Once again, Daniel and Jennifer are thrown in a situation of intrigue and suspense when they visit their friend Mitch in Kentucky. Mitch's friends include a mysterious elderly lady who appears in town with no past and a beautiful writer who Mitch knew in his childhood. All of these characters entwined with an evil killer and a threatening flood make for a great read! Seeing the power of the Lord bring everyone through in the end was a great climax to the book. If you like mysteries and other Christian mystery writers like Terri Blackstock or Jane Peart, you will enjoy this book and all of her mysteries in this series.

This book is excellent for children of all ages. It brings to life the excitement of the Kentucky Derby. The book adds fun with it's colorful and imaginative pop-ups and tells the complete story of the race. Includes well researched historical background and photos of past Kentucky Derby's. I loved how the author included a recording of the "Call to the Post".

Ernest England, Jr. put a lifetime of genealogical research in the publication of the genealogy of Jonanthan England (1750-1815)of Burke County, N.C. and his descendants. Jonanthan England moved his family to Adair County, Kentucky in the late 1700's. Ernest traces the England line and kinship as the family grew and flourished in Kentucky. The book is complied from the exhaustive research of Ernest and from information he gathered from each of the family lines by family surveys before the Internet and computer came on the scene. Much information was gathered by personal interview with family members. It is a must have for any descendant of this ENGLAND line.

In this book there are a series of essays that deal with country music our country's early wars to the war on terror. In fourteen essays, the impact and actions of country music and its performers is analyzed.
I think my favorite is the essay by Randy Rudder on the Dixie Chicks condemming President Bush on a stage in London. After Hollywood went berserk over Fahrenheit 911, why the commotion over the Dixie Chicks. DJ's were refusing to play their songs, there were CD Smashing parties, etc. Well, it's because they were country singers.
If you're a country fan, or if you're a music theoritician, you'll love this book
