Ellington (CT) (Images of America)

I purchased three (3) copies of this book (to share with my family).

My sister and I grew up in Ellington, CT, for a good share of our childhood.

This book brought back memories of our time there in the 1960's and early 1970's.

We grew up with most of the grandchildren, or great-grandchildren of the people mentioned in the book, and it gave added interest to our lives back then.

In the section where it told of the grade school children from Center School walking over with their teachers to the Ellington Library, and Nellie McKnight would be there telling stories...I remember doing that in the 1960's with my class!

Our class always looked forward to such a treat. Plus we also had her grandson, John McKnight, in our class.

It's a journey in time, it gives you a feeling of belonging somewhere. You are able to see through their eyes with recollection of memories, and how things have progressed from the past to the present.

You'll enjoy this book tremendously!

For those interested in the developmental history of ambulance/EMS systems and the state of prehospital care across North America in the 1970's, this is a steriling account. While this book details Connecticut's struggle to combat death with new ideas and systems, it mirrors most other jurisdictions in North America. Detailed areas of funding and finance, logistics and operations, and legislation make this book a good resource for supervisors, administrators and politicans. This should be required reading for every mayor, councilor, and health committee chairman. I find it amazing today (Jan-2000), the number of communties and jurisdictions across North America who are still struggling with many of the prehospital care issues encountered in the 1970's that are described in this book. Some of the same (decision making) mistakes are being made today due to a lack of (good) knowledge as well as misleading information. Given the volumes of ambulance/EMS research, its amazing.

This book is terrific. There are plenty of pictures and there are chapters from all the towns that make up Enfield: Scitico, Thompsonville and Hazardville. Even Shaker Pines is here!

Thompsonville is dominated by the Carpet Mill history and the immigrants that most of us residents descended from.

Absolutely excellent!!

"Erastus Hodges" and early development of Torrington

This work was both fact-filled and very enjoyable. As an early history of Torrington it explains how and why the "Torrington Green" area became the dominant economic and social center of town, a fact which most residents, including many who now live in the area, should become more familiar with. The people in this book, gone now for more than a century and a half, come to life in a way that makes them seem like your neighbors. This book ties together a lot of information from the days of the first settlers of town to the days when the industrial revolution transformed Torrington from an agricultural hill town to a booming river town. I have studied a lot of the people mentioned in this book, and while I like all the local histories, this is the best one written on Torrington and deserves to be on your book-shelf.

Even if you're not a Twain fan you'll probably like this book. It's hilarious-- laugh out loud funny-- and feels very modern. If you're expecting a quaint, outdated book you'll be immensely and pleasurably surprised.

And this specific edition is great too, with one side of the book for Adam's diary and the other for Eve's. (In other words, there's no front or back-- it's two covers, one for each diary.)

This book is excerpted from Dr. Stiles two-volume history of one of Connecticut's original three river towns. Many of the hundreds of genealogies found in Clearfield's reprint carry the pioneering families of Wethersfield forward over many generations from the time of the town's founding in the seventeenth century and are replete with biographical details on numerous descendants. The "Bible" of Farmington CT history
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-04
This book is the most comprehensive and scholarly book available on the history of Farmington, CT. It contains a wealth of information about the families that settled the Farmington valley, including Bird, Stanley, Porter, Steele, North, Gridley, Scott, Cole, Cowles, Woodford, Hawley, and many others. It is massively footnoted, and must be considered a starting point and resource book for any serious genealogist studying the 17th century settlement of the Farmington Valley in Connecticut. Most highly recommended.

A story of Political Survival

Fouche like Talleyrand are secondary historical figures. The amazing thing about both of them is their ability to survive numerous regime changes in France. This book details Fouche's life and his survival skills and how he used the power he had to his best advantage.
Fouche a nd talleyrand could be described as political sociopaths, read this book and you will se why.
