Although the book deals with more serious subject matter than the preceding books, as a reflection upon Anne's growing older, the book starts with the lighthearted catchy fun that made Anne famous in her prequels. Most of this fun is centered on the Anne's encounters with her roommate cats Rusty, Joseph, and Sarah-Cat. Anne's exclamations of fear at being stalked by the docile house cats is classic Anne and delicious fun.
The Book also dives into more serious matter, with Lets be friends-Lets be more than friends-Lets be friends-I hate you-Marry me! Gilbert abandoning his indecisiveness and aggressively courting Anne. Although this relation is of little interest to male readers, it is made a key plot element, most likely because it is attractive to the books target demographic, pre-teen girls. Luckily, most of the content on Anne's romance does nothing to affect other parts of the story much and as a result are harmless to skip when they become drab.
Anne of the Island is a solid installment in the Anne series. Although not equaling or surpassing Anne of Green Gables, "Of the Island" leaves little to be desired besides not having a near constant usage of the word "eh". If you an Anne fan, pick up her third book. Eh.
DelightfulReview Date: 2006-06-23
Anne fans already know how wonderful are these chapters of Anne's life. This book outlines an important epoch in the series and answers the all important question of whether they will or they won't--a turning point on which the next five books hinge. And since you must start at "Anne of Green Gables" to appreciate any of it, this review cannot convince to you read just book three. It is just one more love letter to "Anne of the Island" added to this review panel.

wonderful story, not so great annotationsReview Date: 2008-01-02
If you know the story of Anne already, this might be an intersting second read, otherwise I recommend to stay away from the annotations so as not to spoil the wonderful story.

A great story with colorful pictures!Review Date: 2004-11-28
This version of the book is hardback and VERY colorful, which I really enjoyed, and it is a book from the Illustrated Junior Library Editions. It comes with a plastic covering to protect the book. This book along with Anne of Green Gables would be a great book for any young girl, and can be passed down to the next generation.

THE MAIN OUTLINE
Anne is a poor orphan girl who has been treated badly by all the people who she has stayed with. However, she has an unquenchable imagination, which keeps working wherever she is. Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert(brother and sister) adopt Anne and the adventures start from there.............
MY FAVOURITE PARTS
One of my favourite parts in the book is when Anne tentatively shows her hair, which she attempted to dye black but ended up green, to Marilla.

A Nice EditionReview Date: 2002-11-20
Orchard is a nice edition of three Lucy Maud Montgomery classics.
Copious reviews of all three works are available under their individual titles here on Amazon so I will just say that I recommend all three and this book would be an excellent gift for a young reader who enjoys fiction with a historical setting, "Anne" lovers particularly, should enjoy the two Story Girl titles.
It does seem a bit odd to group the more mature Kilmeny of the Orchard with the other two titles but there is nothing in "Kilmeny" that is unsuitable for a modern day younger reader.
A classic set in one volumeReview Date: 2001-01-31
This book was published with the cover picture from the Disney Channel series "Avonlea". I love the volume, and am sorry to see that it is currently out of print. It would have been nice to see if they had other compliation volumes.

Pure L.M. styleReview Date: 2008-08-12
The only story I didn't like was 'Helen's Awakening'. I added to the story on my computer, not wanting the story to end like it did.
But the rest of the stories were so good. I agree with another reviewer. 'Young Si' was the best story.
Enjoy!

My ReviewReview Date: 2006-11-27
This book is amazing because everything i mentioned wasn't even half of what Anne does and her adventures. I really love this book because children and adults love it. I know adults would like it because my mom read it and she really likes it, so i'm pretty sure aduls would like it. When my parents bought it for me, i couldn't stop reading it. I didn't even have a boring part because all the parts are either funny or catching. I had alot of favorite parts but i really liked the part when Anne and her friends were playing Elaine. It is a poem and they wanted to act it out. so some one had to get in a bout and act dead and the other gils would push her and the bout in the water. And the girl who did it was Anne. If you like books exitment and amazment, you will surely like Anne of Green Gables.

For all of us who only associated P.E.I. with the idyllic works of L.M. Montgomery (of ANNE OF GREEN GABLES fame), this little collection of Gallant's is a very sharp poke in the eye. You are not going to find fond reminiscences of golden summer days and cozy Christmases. John Gallant tells about his worthless father who refused to do any work and a brother with a suspiciously "sore back" who was much the same. There are stories concerning the parish priest who, through his greed and mean spiritedness, made Gallant question if believing in a religion was really worth the effort. Since Heaven, for Gallant, consisted of enough food to eat and a warm place to sleep, why believe in what didn't exist?
Told in simple terms with honesty and very dry humor, this collection will be sure to please short story enthusiasts, as well as anyone interested in Canada and the Great Depression.
a work of loveReview Date: 2004-07-17
A century and a half of subsistence livings wrung from the sea and the land, plus large Celtic families, has ensured a constant flow of people from this area out across the rest of the continent.
This is a work of love from a talented son, who put together the stories of his father -- raised in P.E.I. during the depression as a "neglected and starving child" -- into an intensely memorable book.
It touches deeply this Prince Edward Island born heart, and speaks to our common human longing for home and rootedness.

Beautiful combination of pictures, quotesReview Date: 2005-10-22
So, for example, we have Montgomery telling Ephraim Weber how lovely and satisfying it was to set foot on the island's red soil again, connected with wonderful pictures of red farmer's fields in the village of Hampton.
Examples like this abound through Spirit of Place, making it one of my all-time favourite L.M. Montgomery-related books. Since Amazon.com says it's unavailable, try ordering it from Amazon.ca

I've read Anne of the Island each year I've been in college, and as I finished it this time, I couldn't help but relate to Anne's excitement for the future, mingled with regretful nostalgia about the college life she was leaving behind. College is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Having attended a small Christian university, I relate to Anne's old-fashioned values and the safe, wholesome environment of Redmond.
Montgomery has such a pungent writing voice, alive to the quirks of human nature and the beauties of outdoor nature. She brings spice, optimism, and a touch of cynicism to the story and the characters. Anne's most personal experiences are recounted with poignancy, and are rooted in reality, although they may seem whimsical to modern readers. The ending is sweet and satisfying. I just love Anne, and especially this tale of her college experiences. Don't miss it.
