Definiteley one of the more educated storytellers out there. Herbert Pleiman unfolds a fast paced story so concievably real that you can believe it can happen! A fushion of high tech hazards and low tech havoc keep four Key West inhabitants working to save their land (and lives) against all odds.
A definite "keeper" in your bookcase!

Nothing absorbs a reader more than and exciting novel full of suspense and awash with humor. If this is what you're looking for, then Itch of an Islander certainly delivers. Complex characters step unknowingly forward into an even more complex plot that leaves one wondering what the fate of an entire population of care free island people will be! A definite keeper in my collection.

A well crafted book that seemlessly vacilates back and forth between factual and fictional chapters. The former provides a wealth of information for people of all ages. The latter will keep young teens interested in the book from start to finish. Kelley Weitzel has done a wonderful job of creating a piece of literature that both educates and entertains.

Written for young readers in grades 4 through 8, Journeys With Florida's Indians by Kelley G. Weitzel (Senior Preserve Naturalist at the Pelotes Island Nature Preserve) is an attention engaging, entertainingly adventurous, informed and informative survey of Florida's antiquarian history and the daily life of the Paleo-Indians who first settled there. A very strongly recommended addition to both school and community library Native American Studies collections for young readers, Journeys With Florida's Indians is enhanced with maps and historical engraving amplifying the lively and accessible text, which blends archaeology and history for a very readable and enjoyable experience.

Ah, here we are. Here are those oft' cited "glory days of yesteryear" lovingly reprinted by John Boisonault and Tom Corcoran - and the timing couldn't be better. From a literary perspective, it's of course Springtime with various versions of "season" winding down. Jasmine and Cereus perfume the often thunderous nights and a hammock'd or curled-up casual sip'n read offers just the sought after relaxation. Nothing could be finer or more suitable than Key West Collection. With a deft, self-depreciating yet mannered air, Ms. Raymer recounts first-hand adventures and mis-adventures in the "open air asylum" of old Key West. Here is a roustabout Last Resort of costume parties, nudity, famous writers, domestic squabbles, internecine jealousies, street bums, dirtbags, cruise ship passengers, body piercings and arguments over who got here first. Sound familiar? The beauty of the selection, of course, is how little much of our "lifestyle" has changed over the past 50 years. There is, however, one aspect that veritably screams out for notice...and that is humor, ingenuity and tolerance. I've had the pleasure of meeting many of the characters in this book. (The description of Cigarette Willy, alone, brought back a swirl of memories from that place before modernization and AIDS where one "merely had to wish to make it so.") Events like Fantasy Fest, the Suds Run, the Hemingway Festival and the Conch Republic Celebration were hatched in a hazy improvisation long before being certified as "annual events". It is worth noting that all of the events in this book took place in those days often cited as when Key West was "dying" - those days when Duval Street was shuttered and the streets were empty. Well, as the Key West Collection attests, someone was here, and though they may not have been rapaciously gouging the City and its tourists for every last penny they could squeeze out of them, they somehow managed to thrive with renegade humor and world famous alacrity. In fact, they survived so well that they created the "Key West" that so many tourists come here, in vain, to discover. Tom Corcoran's photographs from the near distant past, evoke a time of shrimpers, flop houses, stripper bars, lazy afternoons, grey weatherered buildings and Tennessee Williams - not tricked-up plastic faux once-upon-a-time trinket stands, mind you: the real thing. It's there in the scented evening air, in the smell of fresh Cuban bread and stand-up buche. It's there in a note from 1981 wherein the authoress can't find Tennessee Williams' house because "the streets were being dug up for sewer installation". We even read of a squabble between usurer Juius Stone and "Charlie Ramos" over the location of the "truly southernmost house". Key West Collection is the perfect gift for the newly arrived who'd like to know a bit more about their new "home" before they form an idea of what it ought to be. -Bud Nevero

This is one great book. I love Key West and someday I'm going to move there. It's home. When I discovered this book I didn't expect the reaction it gave me. It brought me back. The characters, the craziness, and the surreal island life of the Keys came rushing back to me like a tidal wave. It reminded me of what I love and miss about Key West. A wonderful read.

This book is very intruging and exciting. It is all about Eugenie Clark's 12 years as director of the cape Haze Marine Laboratory now known as Mote Marine Laboratory. She encounters sharks and captures them for research. She learns much and this book is filled with many facts. This is better than the first book she wrote. Even though this book is old, it is still as fun and interesting as ever. Adventure surronds you as you dive in to read it and to explore Eugeine's world!

As a landscape designer, I use this book almost daily as a complement to Michael Dirr's texts. The line drawings of each plant in youth and maturity provide a better idea of its habit than most pictures ever could. The "Problems and Maintenance" section has helped me avoid many potentially inferior plants, and the "Adaptability" information gives a nuanced understanding of wind tolerance, pH, light and water requirements. Finally, the "Seasonal Interest" symbol provides a finely tuned assessment of the plant's attractiveness throughout the year: I use it to find plants with year-around interest. This is a book for professionals who have to live, and die, by their plant recommendations.

The characters inhabiting the stories in this collection are woven into the complex and highly satisfying form of a truly American tune. . .From the lost children of "Purple Haze" to the tragically lost seekers of the title story, Ms. Macenulty has captured the shadows and light of the end of an era: marriage, divorce, imprisonment, addiction . . . all the hallmarks of those generations that moved through the twilight of late twentieth century America. . .It's rare, too, to find such a satisfying read. The natural rhythms and pacing of the stories keep the pages moving, keep us caught up in these stories, because it's so easy to find ourselves in them, rapt in the detailed imagery and turn of phrase that makes Ms. Macenulty's writing something to really cherish.
An original and moving collection

The Language of Sharks is an extraordinary collection of stories, due as much to the author's unflinching eye, as to the absence of sentimentality. MacEnulty's prose cuts right through lives, sifting for the small unexpected moments of illumination. The short story "Inside Out," in which a married woman confronts her troubled past, is alone worth the price of the book. MacEnulty is an amazingly gifted writer, and these are stories to be read and reread.

This is a beautiful book, with very touching photographs, but also moving journalism. I love the photographs, but cling to the stories, whether it be feeding the stray dogs or the condemning forgiveness of the oysterman, who said, "I guess those people in Atlanta need to fill their swimming pools." Which means, less water for the river and the oysters. I live in metro Atlanta, and I have not been in my subdivision's pool in many years. I want to turn our "pool" into a subterrainian recycle center! May God bless Richard for all the good he has done, and will do.

The EXCELLENT coffee table book.
"THE LAST GREAT BAY" by Richard Bickel
Is a huge large format work filled with wonderful photos, interesting text, and a love of the area that Bickel came to care so much for that he made it his home.
I spend quite a bit of time in Appalachicola and the surrounding area during the year and I can tell you that he has hit the nail on the head.
Now, if all those 'other' people would just go away.
