This companion work to Neely's The Fate of Liberty continues the investigation of the incarceration of prisoners, this time in the South. Gleaned from very obscure records by a man with the patience of Job in finding them, Southern Rights provides a unique glimpse into the South and how it treated civil liberties during the war. We have heard so much about Lincoln's dealings in this area but little about Jefferson Davis's. You will be surprised. I find Neely's writing engaging, although you should have an interest in the topic first. Casual reading for the uninitiated it is not. But it does avoid the turgid rhetoric that is far too common in academic works. Highly recommended and different.

this book was very very good with a lot of informations and helpful. it helped me a lot on my research paper for my history class. at first, i had a really hard time trying to find informations about what ended the war and how it ended, but when i got to this, it gave me so much informations. which was a really good thing because i thought i wasn't gonna be able to find anything on how the war ended or what ended the war.

A very well done book, making great use of primary sources. Colonel Stacey's official reports during WW II are no secret to serious Canadian Army researchers (and are available for free online at the DND website); what Clive and Doug have done is synthesize these reports masterfully into a very readable and informative book covering small arms, ordnance and weapons commonly used by the Canadian Army. Highlighting this volume are many unpublished photos, all of high quality.
For the price of admission, this book is well worth it. One hopes to see an expanded version some day, perhaps with colour photos of surviving contemporary artifacts, but as is, this is a great reference.

Dr. Menefee, a Maury Fellow, has clearly described the trends in shipping / piracy and the international response to the disturbing facts that he and the other contributors have carefully documented.
The book is written in a language foreign to most legal scholars: English.
A superb reference; an excellent baseline for assessing future trends and a disturbing report of the ongoing threats to shipping.

If you like courtroom trials you'll love this murder trial of an English doctor accused of overdosing a rich elderly woman patient with heroin, morphine, and? You feel like you are present as the trial in London's Old Baily Criminal Court vividly unwinds over 2 1/2 weeks. The direct and cross- examinations and descriptions of the 'cast of characters' is clear and riveting. Ms. Bedford writes with a marvelous sense of pace and descriptive power. I could not put this book down and in fact have read it several times, enjoying new nuggets each reading. The Introduction by an English law professor is fine...and WHAT skillful use of the English language...as only the English can produce! Mike Provine

This is not a book but a series of volumes often referred to as the "geen series". It covers the crimes of less known criminals but often even worst than the [in]famous Goering, Ribbentrop, Kaltenbruner, Hess, Franck, Keitel etc...
The people judged here are the ones who actually invented the refinements for materializing their masters' devious nightmares, and later attempted to hide their guilt behind the existence of verbal or written orders.
The court didn't get fooled and the sentences are nevertheless surprisingly lax.
It is naturally extremely well documented, and, with its interrogation and counter examinations, it is a precious document in itself.
The series proves that nazism is not just the infamous work of a mad Hitler, but the combined personal ambitions of public servants who thought they wouldn't have to be held accountable: decisions get difused to cause a monstruous result. It is obvious that this lesson of history has escaped modern societies.

There is no doubt that the series is worth its (heavy but not expensive) price for the serious student of the Holocaust or for the serious student of politics.

An Outside view of the U.S. Army from Vietnam to Iraq

Vietnam left as many wounds in the structure of the U.S. Army as it did in the American culture. Among these was a wide spread drug abuse problem, a large and widespread negative view towards military authority, and suspicion that the need for a military was over.
In the years since the military and our culture has changed. Minor events like Grenada and Panama help to restore the faith of the Army in itself and that of the public. It became clear that the need for a military has not passed.
During these years the Army changed from a force requiring conscription to an all Volunteer force with considerably more professionalism than before. Other events such as the bassing of the bomber generals that ran the Air Force in World War II to the Fighter Mafia that developed more recently.
These years formed the foundation for the Army that began operations in Afghanistan and Iraq after the 9/11 attack. This book examines the changes that have occurred in not only the U.S. Army, but the political and social climate that drove these changes.
The author is British and is a Senior Lecturer at King's College, London in the Defence Studies Department. As such, he can see with perhaps more clarity than we who lived through these years. His analysis is most interesting, this is a very worthwhile book as we view the changes happening as a result of the intervention in Iraq and the political uproar that grows louder as the time increases.

Despite its lack-luster and uninspiring title, Buscher's book is the definitive work on the subject of the United States' trial
and subsequent release of war criminals in the trials which took place after Nuremburg. He does a good job detailing West German efforts to secure the release of these "so-called war criminals" (as they referred to them) and the motives which underlay them. It is an unfortunately and undeservedly neglected work, far superior in its research, depth, and scope of understantding to it's oft-mentioned British counterpart, Bower's "Blind Eye to Murder."

Several books have been written about the movement of Nazi war criminals to Canada following WW II, and in particular about the events leading up to, and surrounding, the 1985 Deschenes Commission of Inquiry.
Whereas some of the other references have specific axes to grind, charging that Canada - either deliberately or unwittingly - became a safe haven for some of the worst criminals to emerge from the war - Mr. Margolian deals with the subject in a straightforward, unambiguous manner. So much so that it leaves no doubt that the war criminal "movement" was in no way a conspiracy but simply a manifestation of the times.
There was mass confusion in Europe at the time, with millions of displaced people in camps with either very little or no identification papers. With unrelenting political pressure from every special interest group in creation back home in Canada, the officers abroad were constantly being "encouraged" to speed up processing. Consequently, some bad actors were able to slip through.
As a primary Immigration Department witness before the Deschenes Commission, and after reading all of the other accounts published since then, I can say unequivocally that this is the most comprehensive and fairest of them all.
