Dr. Howard here introduces a rigid mathematics-based approach to maintain the balance of power and perception amongst nation-states in foreign policy, where countries are considered complex systems involving the distribution of actors.
His proposed Global Defense Policy of Laws and Global Defense Policy System of Laws offers a unique mechanism for policymakers and analysts to predict and avoid conflicts. Through a case study of the United States, the author makes use of timely examples including the ongoing war on terror and pre-emptive military action. His expert knowledge of the inner workings of US defense and military structure provides a thorough insight into the nature and solutions to today's threats.

Martial Law is not that scary

I have the 2nd Edition (1992), which probably dated compared to the 4th Ed. Comprehensive introductory comparison between civilian law and UCMJ. It helps to know a little about civilian law and procedure, which, unfortunately, is almost impossible even for licensed trial lawyers to understand (judges and prosecutors are "trial lawyers" too). This book does help break the brainwashing perped by a lying "news" media and Hollywood disinfotainment, and gives useful advice to NEVER trust police, and NEVER speak with police, and to first speak with a lawyer you can trust. Unfortunately, most people never read a law book until it's too late to do much good. This should be required reading for every person before they enlist. Every person should have a law library anyway, for self-defense, since every person must look out for themselves versus criminals and/or government, and EVERY person is robbed by both every year (especially if they don't even know it). There are many areas skipped in the 2nd Ed, like VA benefits being stolen by VA for 100% of disabled retirees (steal either pension or disabilty). Also, vaccine waivers must be signed on first day of enlistment ONLY (US Census reported 320,000 disabled Gulf War Vets as of Census 2000, plus 35,000 dead is reported from gulfwarvets.com). There are, of course, massive areas of law ignored/censored by the authors, especially frauds perped by courts, as in most other "mainstream" law texts. This, fortunately, does not detract from the book, since that other information is available to those to work hard to seek it out. 2nd Ed has good explanation of pretrial strategy for choosing which tunnel in the infinite maze. Since General Tommy Franks was quoted in December 2003 that he wants martial law in USA today, perhaps all US citizens will need this book soon, after all US courts are shut down and replaced by military Civil Affairs courts-martial.

In this book, editors Zlatko abiæ (University of Ljubljana) and Charles Bukowski (Bradley University, Massachusetts) construct a framework for addressing the process of NATO enlargement from the perspective of small states such as Slovenia aspiring to join NATO. In his foreword, George W. Grayson points out that more small states (with populations under ten million) abound in Europe since the end of the Cold War. These small states have found themselves in a "catch-22" situation vis-á-vis global and regional organizations. A small state is more vulnerable to the effects of membership in such an organization, and yet, if it remains outside the organization, it weakens its own political and economic standing and hence exacerbates its own vulnerability. The book is composed of seven chapters, mostly written by Slovenian scholars. The majority of the chapters are case studies of Slovenian-U.S. relations in light of Slovenia's efforts to join NATO. The book contributes to the literature by providing an insightful analysis of Slovenian foreign policy.---Johanna Granville, PhD

This companion work to Neely's The Fate of Liberty continues the investigation of the incarceration of prisoners, this time in the South. Gleaned from very obscure records by a man with the patience of Job in finding them, Southern Rights provides a unique glimpse into the South and how it treated civil liberties during the war. We have heard so much about Lincoln's dealings in this area but little about Jefferson Davis's. You will be surprised. I find Neely's writing engaging, although you should have an interest in the topic first. Casual reading for the uninitiated it is not. But it does avoid the turgid rhetoric that is far too common in academic works. Highly recommended and different.

this book was very very good with a lot of informations and helpful. it helped me a lot on my research paper for my history class. at first, i had a really hard time trying to find informations about what ended the war and how it ended, but when i got to this, it gave me so much informations. which was a really good thing because i thought i wasn't gonna be able to find anything on how the war ended or what ended the war.

A very well done book, making great use of primary sources. Colonel Stacey's official reports during WW II are no secret to serious Canadian Army researchers (and are available for free online at the DND website); what Clive and Doug have done is synthesize these reports masterfully into a very readable and informative book covering small arms, ordnance and weapons commonly used by the Canadian Army. Highlighting this volume are many unpublished photos, all of high quality.
For the price of admission, this book is well worth it. One hopes to see an expanded version some day, perhaps with colour photos of surviving contemporary artifacts, but as is, this is a great reference.

Dr. Menefee, a Maury Fellow, has clearly described the trends in shipping / piracy and the international response to the disturbing facts that he and the other contributors have carefully documented.
The book is written in a language foreign to most legal scholars: English.
A superb reference; an excellent baseline for assessing future trends and a disturbing report of the ongoing threats to shipping.

Classic English murder trial of a doctor.

If you like courtroom trials you'll love this murder trial of an English doctor accused of overdosing a rich elderly woman patient with heroin, morphine, and? You feel like you are present as the trial in London's Old Baily Criminal Court vividly unwinds over 2 1/2 weeks. The direct and cross- examinations and descriptions of the 'cast of characters' is clear and riveting. Ms. Bedford writes with a marvelous sense of pace and descriptive power. I could not put this book down and in fact have read it several times, enjoying new nuggets each reading. The Introduction by an English law professor is fine...and WHAT skillful use of the English language...as only the English can produce! Mike Provine

In this book, some 21 thinkers - from universities, think tanks, and governmental organizations all around the world have contributed articles discussing how to change these states for the betterment of the world community. These individual essays are collected together and edited by Lennon and Eiss of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
If you want to know more than the little snippets coming out of the candidates, this is a most interesting book.
