It's customary in times of war for civil liberties to be overlooked; but what is more surprising is that the need and actions of military tribunals are not questioned more closely during either war OR peacetime. Here to ask these questions is IN THE NAME OF NECESSITY: MILITARY TRIBUNALS AND THE LOSS OF AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES. Marouf Hasian Jr. is a professor of communications: his analysis demonstrates that 'necessity' has often been evoked as justification for injustices, and case studies support his contention as he considers military tribunals from the Revolutionary War to modern times. His will appeal to a wide college-level audience, from students of law and communications to those interested in military topics.

Haass using timely examples to reinforce his arguments. Most recent major U.S. interventions are included in his book. He does a very good job of detailing why the U.S. should intervene and how the U.S. should. He has many appendices, which contain some very hard to find documents. It's easy to read, not like some other PoliSci texts I've read, and he keeps you interested throughout the book.

Best Book on Military Draft Since "Chance & Circumstance"
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-17
In this readable analysis of Selective Service cases in Minnesota during the Vietnam War Era, Ken Tilsen provides both an anecdotal and scholarly framework to track several resisters and four federal judges. The author quantifies the discrepancies in conviction rate and length of sentence between the four judges for each year, and provides a well-founded -- and ominous -- explanation for these differences. His explanation has particular poignancy and relevancy, as the same issues are on the docket today.

The anecdotal and biographical portions make the book easy to read, and the concise statements of the legal issues makes it most informative and convincing. Although the book contains a smattering of legalese, it is accessible even to any non-lawyer adult reader. The author represented many of the defendants, and tried numerous cases before these judges. His first-hand knowledge and careful research, his lucid commentary at crucial points, and the interesting period photographs, brings that era back to life.

This book is wonderfully written, winding the story of a ruthless Nazi killer with survivors who he victimized. It gives a good amount of background such that this monster doesn't just appear out of the blue. It's truly seamless writing that is frankly a good story, even if it were used as a recreational read. Definitely worth buying for those interested in history, and who like a good story.

He covers the "making" of Schwammberger, his crimes, capture, and fascinatingly, his escape to South America. His years of living openly are so strange to those unfamiliar with the stories of groups like Odessa, or Project Paperclip. When entwined with the suffering of Holocaust victims, coming full circle to testify at Schwammberger's trial, offers a very well told account of some of the darkest times in history.

Ohly and Spence have produced a very useful guide to a complicated but important area of the law. The authors examine the important jurisprudence in the area with insight and flair. They have distilled the important points and demonstrated a number of flaws in various European directives or proposals.

As a Civil War buff, I never realized how much I didn't know! This book doesn't concentrate on the field battles, but on the battles fought in the courts. It shows how the rest of America, the families and buisnessmen, were affected by the war. A one of a kind book. Worth every cent. Should be in everybody's library.

A stark and revealing insight into the banality of evil
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-10
Ably translated by Carol Scherer and edited by Karl Schleunes, Legislating The Holocaust: The Bernhard Loesener Memoirs And Supporting Documents is the direct, recorded testimony of Bernhard Loesener. This is the man who personally drafted much of the legislation that disenfranchised and dehumanized the Jews of Nazi Germany. He also kept the minutes of inter-ministerial conferences concerned with the "Jewish Question." In 1950, Bernhard Loesener penned a memoir in which he sought to explain and justify his actions, as well as professing his horror of the Final Solution to which he so thoroughly and directly contributed. First published in 1961, Loesener's memoir has never appeared in English until now. Also included are an introduction and lengthy notes by editor Karl A. Schleunes, as well as Loesener's testimony before the Nuremberg Tribunal. An invaluable contribution to Holocaust studies and reference collections, Legislating The Holocaust is a stark and revealing insight into the banality of evil, and the bureaucratic mechanics of facilitating mass murder.

I read this title back in 1992 when I participated in a Law Enforcement/Physical Security Training program for the United States Navy. A very informative work, but unfortunately, it is very outdated at this time (October 3, 2001). If anyone really wants to understand what the U.S. can and cannot do under the laws of the U.N. and the International Community, this is must reading.

The Only Book Available on the Subject
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-25
The advent of fire arms spelt the end of the armored knight of old. Until very recently the soldier on the battlefield had no protection from being shot. The problem is that the only materials that would offer suitable protection was steel, and steel is so heavy that it is impractical to protect more than a small part of the body. Usually only the head was protected using helmets that offered some protection from the fragments of shrapnel of grenades and exploding artillery.

Beginning with the war in Viet Nam, the Army began fielding 'bullet proof vests' made of woven materials that extended protection to the torso of the soldier. These vests were capable of withstanding handgun fire and most shrapnel.

Since that time other new materials have been invented and they, along with their applications are the subject of this book. It is written by a selection of experts in the field. About half the authors are from the US and include writers from the military, industry, and research groups. The remailing authors are from literally around the world.

Most of the book is on the new materials themselves. But the latter parts are on specific applications including material on the new vehicles and equipment that has been introduced or which is still in the planning stages.

This is the first book to provide a comprehensive review of the materials used in modern armored systems. Not only does it cover the woven fabrics, but it also included material on things like ceramic faced molded armor.

This is the state of the art in armor as it exhists today.
