Great Collection of Pictures

Review Date: 2006-03-23
In the 1920's Florida was successful at marketing itself as the place to vacation away from the winter snow. Transportation in those days was by train, and Florida had three major lines: The Atlantic Coast Line, Seaboard Air Line, and the Florida East Coast.

This book, one of a series from the same publisher, is part history, and part memories. The memories come from a huge collection of photographs, menus, advertisements, maps and other things from the time and the railroads. This is a beautiful collection that makes you wonder where they could have found so many relevent pictures.

Florida rail played an important part of the history of rail in the 1920's. They were extremely active in promoting Florida, establishing a custom that continues today. In fact, Amtrak still operates train service to Miami over some of the same routes depicted in this book.

Recommended to rail buffs and Florida historians.

We just returned from a Florida coast vacation and my 8 and 10-year olds' favorite time was fishing with their dad off the beach. My husband referenced the book for what bait to buy, the best time of day to fish, and used the guide in the back to identify what they caught. Order it for yourself or a gift. It'll be worth the wait.

This book is well written by a first time author. He moves his characters through the story with a purpose and carries a simple but well thought out story to an effective end. I expect to see more of this writer in the near future.

Author Stephanie Doyle illuminates her stories with suspense and entertaining prose. Some of these stories are familiar: the kidnapping of Adam Walsh from a mall in Hollywood FL and Ted Bundy's last murder rampage(in FL) but Doyle offers new insight into these cases. This is investigative reporting at its finest.

This article is an insightful and provoking look behind Florida's Valued Policy Law and the interpretation by the court in Mierzwa. If you are interested in property insurance in Florida, this is a must-read article. Mr. Garaffa's grasp of the topic and ability to convey understanding of this difficult and complex topic is outstanding. This is a great article regarding property insurance in Florida.

A little side note on this topic is that Mr. Garaffa provided testimony on this topic to the Florida Legislature when they were considering new legislation on the Valued Policy Law.

Great Book Of Florida's Military History
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-16
This book was written by my grandfather. He loved history, especially military history. He lived in Florida for years and worked as chief historian for the Florida National Guard. He wrote this book when he lived in St. Augustine Florida. He loved writing this book. It traces the history of Florida's army of more than 400 years. It is very interesting and informative. I recomend this book for anyone who enjoys military history or just history. This book represents what my grandfather loved best. Enjoy!
